Question Is this a tacky idea?

I need brutally honest answers so don't hold back and don't worry about offending me as nothing you say will!

DP, DD and I often have dinner at our local sports club, they have in recent years upgraded the club and it is actually really nice now. Those who live in my area know this club as the West Belconnen Leagues Club (now known as the Raiders Club) at Kippax. Anyways a few weeks ago i went to the bathroom and on the back of the door they had a poster about they now do weddings (maybe they always did, i'm not sure!) and from the pictures it looks really lovely. They offer:

    ·Two course dinner

    ·Dance floor

    ·Room hire

    ·Table floral arrangements

    ·Chair covers and sashes

    ·Champagne with the toasts

·Tea light candles on each table

    ·Skirted head table

    ·Cake table

    ·P/A and lectern

The prices sounded reasonable as well, about $90 per person and they have different sized rooms ranging from 300 people to 60 people but i doubt we could even find 60 people who would want to come!

Getting married has been on my mind for well over 5 years (we have been together 8 years this august, he proposed on our 10 month anniversary) we don't want a huge celebration as we don't really have a lot of close friends or family for that matter who we would invite. We had planned just a small private ceremony probably just us, our mums and maybe our bestfriends. And we wanted a spectacular reception but nothing too fancy ITMS?

I think the club idea would be really nice, we are familiar with the venue, its reasonabley close for our guests and we can stumble home afterwards

But i have to ask if its a tacky idea and our guests would think it is too.

Ok hit me with your honesty!

P.S im not sure if im allowed to include a link so i didn't add one

Nah I think it's a cute idea! I hang out with my mum at her bowls club all the time, I'm thinking of having dd's 1st birthday there Nothing better than a good package either, so you don't have to worry about a thing. Is that a good price? I never looked into receptions when I got married so I'm not sure about the value. If you like the place then why not?

We had ours at the Palmwoods Bowls Club. I think if people think its "tacky" then you don't really need them there at the wedding anyway......

We only had a small wedding (family and about 4 friends) because I had been married before and didn't want to go through the whole thing again.. LOL

    Exactly!

One thought though, if there isn't too many people who you want to celebrate with, why not pick an awesome restaurant to head to, and splurge at a place you wouldn't normally go too?

Don't invite people for the sake of making up numbers, invite the people you treasure!

I think so too. And this is way cheesy but it was the place we had our first date many moons ago, that place has alot of memories and to me it would be special but DP isn't so sure. He's always so worried about what people think..

I estimated for 50 people and it works out to about $4500. And with a small ceremony, rings, dress and tuxe should be no more than $8000. Obviously we won't get married anytime soon as i'd need over a year to save and plan! But its nice to know that its an option.

Sounds lovely. I recently went to two weddings at a university cafe and it was lovely. The meals were delicious, there was a great little dance floor, and it was cosy and beautifully decorated. As gorgeous a wedding as I have ever been at and a lot more personal for the bride and groom than some of the large hotel weddings I have been at in the past. It's your day, go with wherever you feel would mean the most to you.

That is true. I just wrote up a list of our special friends and family and i'm already up to 30 people! Kids included. I could think of 20 more that we would like to share our day with, work friends and aquaintences (sp?)

I reckon it sounds lovely. I have been there, and its a really nice place I say go for it!!

For our reception we booked out the local nightclub.... during the day ofcourse... but it was still the nightclub lol We were friends with the owners who did us a FABULOUS deal on the grog and they decorated it for us- I did the catering. It was a budget wedding, but hey- we had fun, i think our guests had a good time We ate, we drank and we celebrated!!! The place also held some sentiment for us too as we first met in the front bar... which kind of sealed the deal for us

I think it sounds great, after all, your wedding day is exactly that, YOURS. Yours to plan however you (and your partner) like, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

    Thanks everyone.

I'm loving hearing where you all had yours! So many different venues! Its great!!

It may not even be until our 10 year. So the kids are old enough to be looked after so we can escape for our honeymoon

I got married in a haunted castle btw, and more than a minority of people would call that tacky. But I loved it and still love the fact that we did it more than ten years later

We had our reception at an Ex-services club. It was fantastic. Alot of people have their recptions at clubs. Although it only cost us around $20-30 pp, we had 100 guests, three course meals and then put $1000 over the bar for beer and wine (albeit 7yrs ago now). My advice is ring around a few of the different clubs in the area and compare prices. For $90 a head you should have a choice of quite a few different venues around Canberra, although at least you already know that the food at the Raiders is decent.

basicallly, its your wedding, do what you and your DP want!!!

My brother use to work there, and his flat mate still does, if you want I can ask them how they think the functions are, like if they think people normally enjoy them etc..

We had our reception in a pub. no sit down meal, no offical dance floor, the only decorations were the balloons and confetti my mum bought. Just a courtyard in a pub. And people are still telling us now what a fanstastic time they had.

the only reason I can think as to not do it is to make it special, like not somewhere you go all the time, as it is your wedding, do something you have never done before or somewhere you have never gone before to make it stand out. In saying that, we localled the pub all the time, and I guesss there are other things that will make it stand out and be different.

Just thought I would add, my sister had her first wedding (the English wedding) in a park in London followed by a lunch in their local pub, and the second wedding (the australian version for us Aussies ) in her PIL's backyard - everyone loved them and she got to celebrate twice!
