    Coconut Oil......

    I have been hearing lots about coconut oil, I know lots of paleos use it in cooking and one gf just eats a spoonful each day so was who uses it here?

    Do you do all cooking with it? Does it taste strong when cooking with it? What else do you do with it?

    Am heading to the health food shop today to get some. Any advice appreciated!

    TIA

    I use it constantly. I buy organic cold pressed stuff. I use it for:
    * face cleanser (best make up remover ever)
    * moisturiser
    * deodorant. Doesnt last all day but doesnt have nasty chemicals in it
    * for nicks and cuts
    * ingrown hairs
    * sore bottom
    * cooking. Frying, baking, whatever. I alternate between ghee and coconut oil for frying depending on flavour

    Coconut oil is antibacterial and antifungal. $20 for a litre may seem expensive as a cooking oil but it's cheap as a moisturiser

    Love it! I don't use it for cooking instead of other oils really (still experimenting) but I use it in baking a lot and in smoothies and well...whatever I feel like. A bit in my porridge with some chopped apple turns oats into a healthier taste sensation love it. I have trouble sourcing it cheaply enough in larger quantities (ie 1L) which probably prevents me from using it more.

    It doesn't have a really strong taste I don't think. I reckon it's lovely and subtle. And yep I lick the spoon when I'm done or wipe the edge of the jar and rub it into my skin. Delish! And it's soooo good for you.

    I use it to replace cooking oil and I love it, especially the edge it adds to some simple foods like an omlette. Yummo! but it can be used for soooo many things even to kill head lice and dry scalp, but really good for the gut too. Miranda Kerr has come out saying she takes it every day too, secret weapon So you're in great company there! I love the flavour it puts into foods, but my son really hates the smell of it when it gets hot.

    My self and friends get ours by co-oping direct from the Banaban group, so we pay $14l i think for the Organic cold pressed/awesome stuff. I use it for lots of things, baking and cooking, the kids love it off the spoon, I confess i don't like coconut too much so i am building up a tolerance I also use grapeseed and olive oil for cooking depending on what i an making.

    We use it. We have a jar of organic cold pressed... and that is exxy and has a very strong flavour. But for general frying etc we use the coconut oil we have for making soap, which doesn't have the strong smell/flavour. Bit the same as buying extra virgin olive oil for the flavour, and generic olive oil for cooking. Our big bucket of coconut oil is food grade, but in bulk for making our soap Maybe look up some soap oil suppliers and get a big bucket that way

    I'm not actually a fan of frying with it tho, it doesn't seem to like heat and smokes quite easily.

    try your local Indian stores, they use it in a lot of cooking too...not sure if it's organic certified but sometimes it will sill still have husk fibres so its sort of organic! fresh from the nut type thing...and last look it was about $7.00 a litre
    its yumm in seafood curries!

    I use it for moisturiser, a lady at our local markets here makes it herself and puts fresh ylang ylang flowers in it. Smells amazing and makes skin soooo soft.

    Flavourless coconut oil has been refined so it's not as nutritious, but still better than the other vegetable oils like canola. We use cold pressed organic coconut oil. I don't like frying with it- I much prefer ghee, butter or lard for that.

    I do a lot of baking with coconut oil and coconut butter (which is coconut flesh and oil combined). I also make chocolate fudge with it which is a much yummier way to get down heapings of it than eating it off the spoon (which I've tried but *gag*).

    I love it in the bathroom too- awesome makeup remover!

    We can get pretty unprocessed coconut oil here. I tried it because like you I heard good things about it but I find it way too strong. And if you use it on a BBQ like by hubby accidentally did everything tastes like burnt coconut oil. Horrible! I think I'd prefer the more refined one.
    We eat lot of fresh coconut though with all the good oils. :-)

    I use it in my hair. It helps tame the unruly frizziness. It is a fine balance between fuzz and slick though but it is very moisturizing and has made a big difference to my mop

    I put it in porridge and sometimes eat it off the spoon but I feel a bit of a fat attack if I do that and feel queasy. I don't like frying with it but I made choclate crackle slice from Tenina's recipes( you need a thermomix)and it was just great so I iwll be using it more in confectionary stuff, I also have used it as the fat in toasted muesil/granola. Another vote for using it as a toiletry..I haven't used it as much as I should though. I will use it for perineal massage and for new bubby's bottom but that's not exactly eating it!
