    Corpus Luteal Cyst

    Hi everyone

I got my ultrasound scan results today and in the report it said that I have a 5.3cm corpus luteal cyst on my right ovary. The doctor didn't mention anything about it so I assume it's nothing to worry about?

I have no idea what a corpus luteal cyst is, so would really appreciate any info you guys have on this!

    Thanks

I had my scan today the sonographer said i have may have cysts too but mine are just not big enough to be classed as a cyst but i had this with my last pregnancy as well i found this article when i googled the cyst hope this helps.

After an egg is released from the ovary, the corpus luteum is responsible for making the hormone progesterone. It is this hormone that prepares the uterus for pregnancy.

A typical corpus luteum is round and fluid-filled and can range in size from less than two centimeters (about an inch) to six centimeters or more. Ovarian cysts usually don't cause any symptoms. In fact, corpus luteum cysts appear toward the end of the menstrual cycle, last into early pregnancy, and then usually resolve over a period of time without any special treatment.

It also said that you may get a bit of pain but if it gets too bad then go to the hospital.

Also with my last pregnancy my doctor did not tell me i read it on my report and went straight back and made him reassure me. I was really freaked out till he said its fine.

    thanks Nikki

It's also is what sustains the pregnancy until the placenta starts functioning and stops the body from rejecting the "foreign body"(thats how my doctor explained it) forming in the uterus. You would think that it would be easier for him to have said "the baby" or "the foetus".

Thanks guys, these are the similar sorts of things I have been finding after searching google...it's a bit of a relief, but still a bit of a worry in some ways.

Nikki - I only read it on my report when I got home as well, the doctor didn't mention it in my appt. So I guess it can't be anything serious otherwise she would have mentioned it to me.

I had really bad pelvic pain with my first pregnancy, it ended up being the luteal cyst was bleeding. I found this out after having at least 2 doctors giving me the miscarriage lecuture even though I was not bleeding at the time.

I had the same when I had my 9wk date scan and the sonographer told me it's completely normal, nothing to worry about. My Ob said the same thing. It was gone by the time I had my 15 week scan.

It's a relief to hear that it's nothing to worry about - thanks for your replies

I also went and browsed the pregnancy books in the bookshop at lunchtime today to look it up and it all says the same thing you guys have said.

    Thanks again !

i went for an ultrasound today it also said i had a corpus luteum.. its 2.9 cm..
it said also both ovaries appear normal the right is 5.8cc and the left 18cc with a 2.9cm corpus luteum..
and it says nabothian cysts are noted.. what is that...
and wot are the horn things they are talking about.. apparently i got a 12mm in the right horn and 8mm in the left horn...

why cant they just use normal terms for???

Laranna All that's here about corpus luteum cysts is correct, from my own POV i had one that was 10cm by 7cm (!) that caused me no pain or problems except once when a friend (who is a doctor) was having a feel of bubs and accidentally poked it. None of my MW's ever did that and though it was sore when it happened it was just tender for a half hour or so and then fine again. I only had one scan (at 11wks) so i never was re-checked but i haven't had problems since so i assume all is well

lea nabothian cysts are blocked musuc glands on the cervix. The nabothian glands are what produce the cervical mucus and it is both common and harmless for them to become blocked. Sometimes women feel the lumps themselves, sometimes the gyn finds them at a pap smear, often they go undetected. They generally resolve themselves and are completely harmless. Unless they cause you problems they are absolutely nothing to worry about. I would assume the "horn" they are talking about are the left and right horns of the uterus, and the 12mm and 8mm are the depths of uterine lining on each side. How far long are you?

I had a large Corpus luteum cyst at my 7 week scan. It was almost 10cms but my GP didn't even bat an eye lid, she advised that they were quite normal. I did some research though and read that a lot of women get the cysts monthly but it passes along with the unfertilised egg (or something similar). Mine had disappeared by my 20 weeks scan but I was very nervous waiting to check that it had gone. I hope everything else works out ok and you can get lots of hugs off your big babies!

As has been mentioned before, a Corpus Luteal cyst is a normal part - indeed, almost essential part - of early pregnancy.

The dates confusion must be confusing for you - I hope that you get some reassuring results soon.

As an aside, I have only ever had a successful pregnancy off my left ovary, as evidenced by the corpus luteum. I have only had girls (of which I have five) and I have had three miscarriages, where the ovary which provided the egg has twice come from the right side. My theory is I do boys from the right, girls from the left

    Hi Ladies,
With my 1st PG, I had an early u/s (about 5 wks) and I had 1 cyst on each ovary- about 4-5cm each. After I had DD, my Ob sent me for a follow up u/s to check that they had gone. I had a cyst about 4cm in size on my right ovary. To fix this, I had a laparoscopy to drain/remove the cyst (day surgery- no biggie). And all is fine.
With this PG, I had another early u/s (cos my cycle dates don't match up with the size of the bub) and my ovaries were enlarged. The sonographer even asked me if I had a stimulated cycle.
So in other words- my ovaries go nuts when I'm PG!!!
    I hope this helps.

Glad you are not experiencing any pain. I was taken into emergency at 5 weeks pregnant in excruciating pain and was given morphine and told it was most likely an ectopic pregnancy and that it would have to be terminated and have my left ovary and fallopian tube removed at the same time. Fortunately for me they discovered the corpus luteum cyst which was bleeding and apparently the reason for the pain. I stayed in hospital for 4 daysand spent another week at home on morphine.I had worried about the morphine effecting the baby and was assured it was quite safe. I gave birth to a very healthy, beautiful little boy who is the light of my life.
