I loooove wax ><;; I have a proper wax pot at home and do it myself now, only because I wanted to have, uhm, a little more removed but didn't want someone that close to my bits. Honestly I don't think it's much different to waxing your eyebrows painwise, you just have to make sure you're holding your skin taunt and ripping it off at the right angles.
I also find the more often you regularly do it the finer (and softer) the hairs start to grow back, and then they rip out easier and alot quicker.
As for how they are done, it depends how much you want off ><;; I have gone in before and they have let me leave my own nicks on but just pull them a bit to the side a bit. They also give you a towel to cover the rest of yourself up, and the leave to let you dress and undress/get the towel covering happening etc etc
I hiiiiiighly recommend a good wax, I wouldn't and don't do anything else. Once it's done it's the best feeling ever - as far as hair free smooth skin goes
