Thank you so much for the tips. I am feeling much more confident now. I have put them in the fridge ready to ice with a knife in the morning (cup of hot water nearby).
Where would i be with out you all!!

OMG MBear where were you when I was doing Oskar's b'day cake...lol. At least I know that little tip about having the cake either frozen or cold for next time

Oh my!! I just took the frosting out of the fridge and it is quite hard - far too hard to even attempt to ice the cupcakes. WHAT SHOULD I DO
I still need to colour the frosting and it is way too hard to mix in the colour.
AHHH!!

Start mixing it rapidly and it will soften, maybe even give it a few sconds in the microwave

It should be ok in a while if you sit it somewhere at room temprature.
You might be able to speed it up a bit by sitting the bowl in warm water.
ETA -and what MrsMac said - stirring will help too...
