I'm glad mine never taste like my mums. I think hers are rock cakes.

Square reminds me of american biscuits.

I don't do the traditional recipe. I was at a friends house and her teen had made scones. They were from Jnr Masterchef I was shocked. They were better than anything I'd ever tasted. Self raising flour, cream and an EGG. And they are amazing every time.

Oi. Enuff with the kiwi bashing, eh! I rarely make scones because they scare me. It's so easy to stuff them up. Mum is brilliant at them. Her's are square and touching (& yes, she's a kiwi)

I did make the lemonade and cream ones in the Thermomix and they were so yummy. With gluten free flour too. Hmmm, scones.....

Does everyone use a butter knife to mix the mixture? I have no idea why they work better that way but they do.

I've pretty much given up on scones. DH always complains that they don't reach the high standards set by the 80 year old neighbour who used to feed him when he was at uni because she felt sorry for him.

YES! It stops you from over mixing.

The masterchef recipe including an egg:

    Date and lemon scones
    Ingredients

    150ml-175ml milk
    150ml cream
    1egg
    3 cups self-raising flour
    2 tbs caster sugar
    1 cup chopped, dried dates
    Finely grated rind 1 lemon
    Cream & jam, to serve

    Method

Preheat oven 200°C fan forced. Line large flat oven tray with baking paper.

Whisk 150ml milk, cream and egg together until well combined.
Combine flour, sugar, dates and lemon rind in a large bowl.
Add milk mixture and stir gently to a soft dough, adding remaining milk if necessary.
Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until dough comes together.

    Press dough out to 2cm-thick.
Cut scones from dough and place onto tray flat-side up.
Press dough together gently and repeat using the remaining dough.
Brush the tops with milk and sprinkle with a little sugar.

Bake 12-15 minutes until golden and well risen.

Serve hot with jam and cream.

Another question then: who like savoury scones? DH was unfamiliar with the concept and doesn't like them. I love them. Cheese and herb scones are yummy. Obviously, not made with lemonade.

I love pumpkin scones but that's about it. Not really a fan of savoury scones.

Square all the way! I am too lazy to cut out the round and then have to reroll the scraps. Yes, I know it is not much work, but I am really really lazy.

And I put mine about 1cm apart so that when they rise they do touch.

    Thermomix scones - best ever!

But I never put things in my scones - like fruit or nuts or flavours (though I will make an occasional exception for pumpkin).

I ask because DH is a Kiwi, and that is how his mum makes them...it seems to be the Kiwi norm
