    Hi girls

Rhia - did Daniel catch your sore throat? Glad to see his constipation cleared up, hope you find a formula that is right for him. Peter gets windy - it must be so uncomfortable for them.

Koru - hi!! Peter sounds the same as Orla. His unsettled period is the feed after midnight, which is usually around 2am. Nothing works & we just have to wait until the next feed where he calms down again. I don't look forward to bedtime!!

TK - I'm glad Caitlin is such a good baby for you. Well done on the weight gain!! How cute is it when they suck on your face lol.

Nonie - Hope everything is going well with the formula - sounds like he's thriving on it.

Misty - Peter is the same lately - only sleeping if I hold him. As soon as I put him down he wakes up. Glad to hear the circumcision went well. I hope you're okay.

Cass - WTG Eloise on the weight gain!! So sorry to hear about the reflux though - it must be awful listening to her scream. Hope the meds are helping.

Saffi - How did Immi's checkup go?

Salboo - How do you feed your son? Peter gets quite windy & I'm keen to try anything that will help. Glad to hear your son is doing so well.

Well Peter has recovered from his cold but my DH got really sick this week. I take my hat off to single parents as it was soooo hard not being able to just hand Peter to DH for anythng. Peter was extra clingy too - probably sensed my stress!! But I guess it was good practise for when DH goes back to work next week. Should see the bags under my eyes though!!
We're still just getting through each day here, no sense of routine whatsoever yet. I'm finding the hardest thing is not knowing when I'm available for appointments etc as his feeding schedule differs everyday. I booked in a massage but unfortunately when I had it Peter was ready to eat so DH had to drive him around in the car until I finished!!

    Hi all

Cheezel - welcome to life with a newborn! Things will start to settle down soon and you will get some sort of a routine established. In the meantime you just need to do the best you can with the free time you've got.
Misty - hope you survived looking after 4 kids.
koru - be warned! Just when you think you've got your baby worked out, they change on you.
tk - WTG Caitlin on the weight gain.

AFU - Immi's checkup went well. She put on 250gr this week (and the same the week before). She is now 4080gr. She is still the same length as she was at birth but her head has grown slightly. All her stats put her on the 50th percentile.

Still struggling with the breastfeeding. I am getting a referral to a clinic to get some assistance. In the meantime we are supplementing app 1 - 3 times a day with formula. Whatever we are doing seems to be working as she has got great weight gains!

Went shopping with Immi today. Strapped her in the carrier and off we went. She slept the entire time. She is a cuddle-bunny and loves being held.

Anyway both kids are down for the evening (I hope) and DH is in his man-cave and a chick flick is on so I might get some icecream and chill out.

Misty - That doesn't sound tooo good hun. Hope it works out not to be too bad... Eloise has the same issues as Baz she can get to sleep during the day, but one of the kids usually scream or knock something that wakes her up :-) Tuesdays and Fridays are our sleeping days lol (no kids at home)

TK - Thats great about ur DD's weight gain YAYAYAY... Glad your able to laugh through it all

Elle - Love your ticker and photo, she's gorgeous

Sal - Wahooo on the weight gain yay! How often does DS poo... Eloise does like 5 a day! almost every second nappy :P

Koru - Hos Orla settling now???

Saffi - Eloise has silent reflux - so doesn't vomit (means she still gets the food and able to pile on lots of weight) also feeds more regulary to sooth her throat... during the day we're feeding ever 1-2hours... Yay on immi's weight gain! that's great Eloise loves being in the carrier too And i had to laugh at part of your post "Misty - hope you survived looking after 4 kids." I have four kids hehe

Cheezel - Hope ur DH has got better, My DP just went back to work on Thursday, and omg what a shock to the system hehehe... No routine here either during the day, But at night we go down at 8, wake at 12 then again at 4. Just depends how long she stays up for each time, sometimes its only 20mins other times its an hour

AFM - Eloise meds must be working, she is a lot more settle now, and has less of the screaming in pain screaming!!! She's only cat naps during the day, and thats if i'm holding her, leaves me with getting nothing done, Lucky DP doesnt mind hehe!

And my OMG moment - Last night she rolled!!! From her back to her right side! She must of wanted to watch the TV (the lake house was on, she's going to be into romantic movies like her mummy :P )

Anyways i best be off, I have so much study to do for my exam on Wednesday! I need to read everything twice just to make it sink in...

Hey everyone just dropping in while I can. Am very tired I only had about 3-4hours of sleep last night, not because of Daniel, I just couldnt get to sleep!
Daniel is going very well, he weighs about 5kgs now, so putting on excellent weight gain, he is rolling onto his side and I got a very gorgeous smile last night. Makes it all worthwhile when his little face lights up!!

Misty- wow well done on looking after 4 kids! I sometimes struggle with one haha

Cass- Good luck with all your exams! and well done to Eloise on rolling yay!

Saffi- Hope everything goes ok with the breastfeeding and you get the help you need

CM- Glad to hear that Peter has recovered from the cold, but your poor DH! And yes Daniel isnt constipated anymore which is a relief.

Well Ive got to be off, Daniel is crying. Hope everyone else is doing well

ggrrrr my nephew is a brat and very whiney - he could be acting up just for my benefit. Am I a terrible person to say that I will be glad when he is gone back to his mum.

I have finally got all three older kids down for a nap (although I can hear one of then quietly talking to themselves), they are all in seperate rooms. Now I am just trying to get a very overtired baby to have a sleep.

DH is out helping my mum and dad unpack a truck full of stuff into my sisters new house. We just realised this morning that DH and I have been together 11yrs today, if it wasn't fathers day I would ask my parents to baby sit tonight so DH and I could go out to dinner. Maybe next year.

Cass - you really do have your hands full! At least your oldest 2 are in school. What are the signs of silent reflux?
    Misty - happy anniversary!

Congrats to all the bubs rolling and smiling. Only smiles I'm getting are from wind!

Saffi - Only one of them are at school. DS2 start school next year Thats going to be bliss

    Silent Reflux
Silent reflux can be very confusing there may be no obvious signs of reflux (such as vomiting) and the child generally isn’t ‘silent’. Silent reflux refers to refluxed material that goes up the oesophagus, but isn’t forced out of the mouth. The child may swallow it back down or the stomach contents/stomach acids may not come up the oesophagus far enough to be swallowed. This can be very distressing for the baby and cause problems; and can be even more damaging because it can sit in the oesophagus longer than if the child vomited. Medical intervention may be necessary because the same complications can arise, however it can be harder to recognise without any noticeable vomiting. If they are comfort feeders as well, then poor growth may not be an issue, and they may in fact have huge weight gains. This can also contribute to a delay in diagnosis.

    Signs and symptoms
Infants under the age of 2 years

    Irritability, excessive crying or screaming
    Vomiting, posseting or regurgitation
    Appearing to be in pain
    Recurrent hiccups
    ‘Wet’ burp or hiccups
Congestion, ‘snuffling’ or appearing to have a cold
    Bad or sour smelling breath
    Feeding issues
displaying a fear of food or unwillingness to eat
pulling away and arching their back
    crying during or after feeds
refusal to feed or only taking a small amount despite being hungry
comfort feeding- wanting to feed frequently
    gagging/spluttering
    difficulty swallowing
    Sleeping issues
    catnapping during the day
frequent night waking (though some refluxers do sleep well at night)
    easily disturbed from sleep
    Hoarse voice
    Repeated coughing or wheezing
Weight issues e.g. inadequate weight gain, weight loss or excessive weight gain
    Wheezing/coughing
Frequent red throat, with infection not necessarily a factor
Recurrent chest, ear, throat or sinus infections
Drooling or excessive salivation (known in medical circles as waterbrash)
    Dental erosion/decay
    Gagging themselves (using their hand/fist/fingers)

    From reflux.org.au

Misty - your not being horrible Some kids just have more "grit your teeth moments" then others lol! congrats on 11 yrs

Rhia - Yay congrats on the weight gain Daniel :P Smiles are definitly worth while... No matter how many times you see them still make my heart melt each time! Even at 2300hrs!

Thanks Cass. Now I'm thinking that Immi could have silent reflux. They are such a wide range of signs and symptoms there.

Anyway, off to bed so that I can get a few decent hours sleep before the next feed.

Saffi - I hope your bubs doesn't have reflux. It isn't fun (as I am sure cass blob can tell you). Jelly had really bad reflux and was absolutely miserable as a bub - She didn't smile until she was nearly four months old. If you do suspect it might be a problem go and talk to your dr and get bubs cecked out). I am still concerned that Baz might have reflux - he has many of the signs, but luckily so far he hasn't seemed to be in pain most of the time. And he is still gaining weight despite throwing up large amounts after every feed (and between feeds). Hopefully he is just a perky baby.

Saffi - Bubs will smile when they are ready. My DD didn't smile until she was nearly four months old. My DS1 smiled for the first time an hour after birth (at first I didn't believe babies could smile that young, but he kept on smiling from then on - defnitely wasn't gas). And DS2 smiled at about 2 weeks.

    Hi guys,
I haven't posted in ages cos my mum is here from NZ. So much to catch up on - sorry about the lack of personals. Thanks to everyone who enquired after Orla's settling: she's sleeping heaps better thru the night (waking regularly for feeds but generally going back to sleep well) but has got into an 'arsenic hour' (or 2-3 hours!) pattern in the evening - still very exhausting but more manageable than at 4am!

I read your post on Silent Reflux Cass - got me a bit concerned cos one of Orla's problems is constant hiccups - she doesn't seem to concerned by them (had them almost every day in utero too!) but sometimes they keep her from going to sleep leading to her getting 'overtired'. For now I'm pretty sure she doesn't have Silent Reflux - just hiccups and does have some gulping issues but they are related to my fast flow and we are managing that (usually!)
Misty sorry to hear about your possible need for surgery - I hope it can be sorted out quickly. As for smiling - although sometimes it may well be wind, a lot of the modern developmental textbooks say that new babies can feel happiness just as much as pain and discomfort so it stands to reason that they are indeed smiling (not just wind!) as much as they are frowning I like to believe they are giving us real smiles .....

Cheezel - it is very cute when they suck on your face... DP thinks it is hilarious when he is burping her and she will try to suck on his arm, his bicep, his collarbone, his neck etc etc. Glad Peter has recovered. Hope DH is better now as well. I don't have a set routine with DD - for me it is easier to follow her lead and if we are out and she needs a feed then I feed her under a wrap or in the back of the car - I fed her whilst I got my legs waxed... that was an experience! I suppose I am lucky that there isn't much to her so I can walk around with her and just carry her... when she gets heavier I think the sling will be a much better option!

Saffi - wtg on the weight gain! Mmm icecream!

Cass - I have to laugh... there have been times where it has been a choice to cry or laugh... most of the time I have been able to choose laughter! Glad that the meds are working for Eloise - yay for rolling! It is great when they reach milestones. GL with your exam!

RhiaMaree - I hate those nights when you just can't sleep - especially now when sleep is at such a premium!

Misty - hope your nephew's behaviour improved for you. Congrats on 11 years! DP and I will celebrate 10 years together in December of this year.

AFM - we have DDs appointment with the Paediatrician today (follow up appointment from her admission to the SCN) which means that she has been out of hossie for 2 weeks
It was DPs first father's day yesterday and he recieved a golf shirt and we are going to make some artwork for the house from DDs hand and foot prints. We had newborn photos done yesterday with Sarah_H ("the Photo Fairy") and we think there are some really good shots... we can't wait to see the photos! Not much else to report... will be back on later after the Paediatrician appt.

    Hi Guys,

Cheezel - i am beastfeeding Max. He was having bad wind around the 2 week mark and i spoke to my maternal health nurse about it. I Knew there were certain foods i shouldn't eat but she informed me to eliminate the following foods from my diet for the first 3 months of feeding.
    Nuts
    Garlic
    Onion
    Cabbage (I knew that one)
    Leeks
    Fizzy drinks
It does make it a bit difficult as alot of the food we usually eat does have garlic/and or onion in the recipe.Especially sice most of the meals I froze have these ingredients also. However for a happier baby it has definitely been worth it!

She also advised feeding max lying down as it reduces the flow of Milk, and therefore stops him gulping so much.
Koru- Happy to hear Orla is sleeping much better for you!

    Misty - Happy anniversary!

    Cass
    - It seems like DS2 poos nearly every nappy! i'm glad to hear Eloise poos alot too! It's the pooy nappies during the night I'm not a fan of!

Just dropping by to say hi everyone and I hope all the mums and bubs are going well

Sorry for the lack of persies, but we are a little sleep deprived ATM (well more than normal!) because Emma has a little cold Poor little thing has been miserable at night but not too bad during the day. But apart from that she is going really well, still feeding well despite a stuffy nose thank goodness and hopefully she will be over it soon. And she smiled at me for the first time yesterday - ohhhhhhh how cute

Will be back for some persies soon, take care everyone

You know when you have those days where you wonder what on earth ever possessed you to become a parent (OMG THREE TIMES - what an idiot!). Well I am having one of those days today. Lets hope I can get them all to have a sleep soon (and maybe even try and get a nap myself, if all three do decide to oblige me by sleeping at the same time) and then wake up happier, less arguementative and less troublesome.

Salboo - I didn't know about eliminating fizzy drinks if you are breastfeeding... mmm might explain some of DD's wind! I am not drinking lots of fizzy drinks but she got a lot more wind in the days following my first fizzy drink post pg (had GD so laid off all that stuff!). Thank you for the info!

Megsmum - hope you are able to get more sleep soon and that Emma recovers from the cold super quickly.

Misty - yep I had one of those moments at 2.45am this morning... and I only have the one! Hope you are able to get some sleep soon.

AFM - DD had her follow up at the paediatrician as it had been 2 weeks since she was discharged from hossie. He put her weight at 2850grams which would mean that she had put on 280grams since last Thursday... now I know her weight gains have been good but I doubt she put on that much! His scales were the old type ones where you move the things across so ?? maybe it was inaccurate - not sure but I see the ECHN again this Thursday (we are still doing weekly weights) so I suppose I will see then... my only concern is that if the weight is wrong and she is less than that this Thursday they will see it as a loss and I might have a fight on my hands to keep her on the breast exclusively. Time will tell I suppose

Hey all, it's been forever since I posted but have been reading and keeping up.

We've had a rough few weeks, DS got sick and we went back to hospital for 3 days and now we're thinking he may also have reflux. Going to start him on a thickner today and see if that helps.

Misty - oh I'm hearing you!! I had the exact same day yesterday and there were lots of tears (from mummy!).

Sorry I haven't been able to post more but it's hard with an unsettled bub and a 20mo who's fond of a tantrum

tk - I just wanted to give you my take on things as someone who had a SCN baby first time around and had some troubles BFing, feel free to ignore it or take it on board as you wish Take Caitlin's weight as whichever is more favourable to what you want to do, many ECHN's are very cautious with weight gains and will recommend comping with formula at the drop of a hat. If that is not what you want to do, go with whatever weight is best This is just my experience, but I got better advice from my paed who was very pro BFing and encouraged me to continue exclusively when the nurses were telling me I needed to be comping. I really wanted to exclusively feed her and regret still that I listened to some of the more dodgy nurses. I know its easy for me to say now when every thing has gone smoothly feeding the second time around too, so like I said feel free to ignore me if you want LOL GL anyway with the next weighing, hope you don't even need to worry!
