I need info/contacts for Doula training courses...

Firstly, it's not for me, it's for my best friend. She has 2 sets of twins under 4 so doesn't get a lot of time to surf the net! So I'm doing it for her.

She ultimately wants to get into midwifery but hasn't completed her HSC and keeps hitting brick walls when applying to get into nursing.

I suggested she tried getting into a doula training course - ultimately it's what she wants to do anyway, support women during birth.

She's based in Adelaide but could do it externally/via correspondence.

Any info or contacts anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Her confidence has taken a knock lately and I really want to support her to do something for HER - she's been a SAHM for 5 years now and with 4 young kids it's going to take an effort and a lot of support for her to get back out there!

Can she do an Enrolled Nursing course instead first? They are usually done through TAFE and you don't need your HSC to do it cause it is what i am going to do and i have only done yr11. It is like a full time job though but you get paid for it. Something like you go to tafe for 1-2 days a week and the rest you work in the hospital. Then she can go on to be a Registered Nurse after that if she wanted and then get into Midwifery. I think all up it would take around 5yrs to be a Midwife though.

I think studying to be a doula first is MUCH better though, they don't teach you this in nursing school

Antheia - she's tried to do it that way but has been told she needs her HSC to do the TAFE course?? I'm not sure if it's different in each state?

She has applied through the College of Nursing in SA and has sat the entry exam but she found out about the exam at the last minute and only had 3 days to study so she thinks she blew it If she passes, she has an interview process to complete but even then they only accept 25 students per intake and there was at least double that at her exam alone. She'll find out on 12th April whether she's been accepted but has lost all confidence.

Kelly - thanks for the link, will check it out now.

**ETA: Kelly that article was great, thank you. But after reading it, maybe this isn't the way to go for her. She has 4 small children, her husband is in the defence force and she doesn't have a lot of family support so being on call probably wouldn't be ideal for her I will talk to her about it anyway, but that is an aspect I didn't consider. If she were doing nursing, at least it would be structured and she could work the family around her studies and work.

    Hi Willow,
Child Birth International and Optimum birth offer courses online in training to be a doula, I am going with CBI as I feel they have more to offer in line with what my objectives are.
I think that having the option of studying from home is great for SAHM as it can be worked around a hectic shedule and you have 3yrs to complete it.
Worth looking into and if your friend decides to do it she will find your support invaluable.
