dairy and egg free / Vegan treats

HI all,

Just thought I'd share a few discoveries that any vegans or people dealing with egg and dairy allergies might enjoy!


I've recently discovered that Cheezly non dairy cheese is actually edible (unlike most soy cheeses). PLUS it melts and is great on pizza, lasagne etc.

Tofutti brand make brilliant non dairy Cream cheese, cheese slices (like kraft singles style) and icecream treats.... THey make an icecream sandwich that is actually better than the normal dairy one!! and also a choc wedge style of popstick icecream called "marry me" They aren't cheap, but so worth the money...

Also, a brand called Turtle Mountain makes the most DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!! icecream!! I'm so in love with thei cookies and cream and also the cherry nirvana... I've checked out their website and they have some really amazing flavours, but haven't found them all here in OZ.....


Vegan perfection - the online shop - has some really amazing vegan chocolates available too... I'm just waiting on their ricemilk white chocolate and the some non dairy mars bars type choc bars...

In melbourne, the only place i've found most of these things is at Macro.... but if you know of any other places, i"d love to know as it's a bit of a drive to get across town to Macro for my chocolate fix

In perth, I found the turtle mountain icecreams at fresh provisions....

Some of the tofutti stuff, like the cheese slices and cream cheese you can get from Coles.... but not the icecream.

Also thought i'd add, that DH, who isn't breastfeeding or allergic and therefore can still have regular cow milk stuff.... has switched over as he agrees that the taste is in some cases better!! plus they are all low in fat and have no cholesterol etc.... so there is also that bonus!

Where is Macro?

Coles in Richmond used to sell the tofutti icecream tubs, but that was 7 years ago now. The health food shop on Bridge Road sold the tofutti cuties. Our coles got them in for a while but I guess they didn't sell too well cos they stopped after not long at all.

You can get heaps of Tofutti & Marry Me icecreams etc in kosher stores around Caulfield/East St Kilda, as we can eat them after meat meals basically. There is a big range of other brands also... And these things called 'cuties' which are an ice-cream sandwich (very yummy!).

Not sure if they have egg in them though???

Another great non dairy treat are alpha chocolates.. Again, you can buy in kosher stores, balaclava or elsternwick coles etc.. Or direct from factory in Balaclava... They have cream and liquoir filled chocolates, and are SOOOO good.

But check if they have egg in them?

Otherwise look for kosher food certified 'pareve' for no dairy products.

Ray ray, Macro is a really big pretty much completely organic supermarket. THe one I go to is on Bridge rd... so maybe we're talking about the same place!?? I'm pretty sure there are a few other stores around now too in the same chain.

Yael - that's such a good idea, i don't know why i hadn't thought of checking out Kosher shops!! BUt I think I will do some research and go check some out next week! I had noticed that pretty much everything we have has the Pareve P on it....just never thought beyond that really...

We shop there for the gluten-free, wheat-free alternatives when we can. Great range but can be a little pricey for some things.

Also try the cruelty free online shop - lots of vegan treats (including marshmallows!). Woolies has Sweet william chocolate. And also stocks the Freefrom range of choc biscuits (in the health food section) Their version of tim tams is vegan and delish! Other vegan treats include Vege chips & Oreo bikkies. Lots of good chinese supermarkets (that in Sunnybank QLD) have awesome mock meats as well (although they often have gluten so check if you are intolerant)

Yael, if its vegan its egg free, so I'm pretty sure the Tofutti cuties are egg free.

I'm not sure if Tofutti were primarily brought out for the kosher market (in the states this is huge), and they got certified vegan, or the other way around.

If it is pareve, because it was primarily brought out as a kosher product, then it might have egg or fish gelatin in it (i know a lot of marshmellows have gelatin, it could be fish or vegatable based, not sure).

Laura - let me know if you want a list of kosher places to try... You will be shocked at the huge range you can find out there.

also- Yael, or anyone else..... do you know of a non dairy condensed milk??

I have such a strong craving for cheese cake, and figure all i need to find is a non dairy condensed milk and then i can make one!

I wonder if slow cooking up a pot of rice milk and sugar will make a rice milk version of condensed milk?!?

is that even how they make condensed milk??? i'm just guessing really.

even better, if anyone has a vegan cheese cake recipe... i'd love a copy!!

Yep - most of the oreo range is vegan (yay!)
Can make a vegetarian cheesecake but havent yet made a vegan one.
Have eaten one though and it was delish. Will let you know if I find a good recipe.

Also allens jellybeans are vegan!!! But most of the cheap ones have gelatine.

Oreos - It might have changed, but last time I checked either the double pack were vegan and the single pack were not, or the other way around. I think they were made in diffrent places, but this is about 3 years ago so worth checking.

after MUCH googling, i found some instruction on how to make rice milk condensed milk....

Condensed Soymilk or Rice Milk II (Slow-Cook Method)

Put 3 cups liquid soymilk or rice milk in a saucepan.
Add 1/2 cup sugar or equivalent.
Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until volume is reduced to 1 cup.
Add vanilla to taste, and a pinch of salt.
Cool.
Store in jar in fridge.

For Evaporated 'Milk: Cook until volume is reduced to 1 & 1/2 cups. Omit sugar.

might give it a go and see how it turns out.

I've emailed my brother for his lemon cheesecake recipe.... it's not vegan, but I thought Ishould be able to just do a switcheroo on the various ingrediants.....

I wonder if arnotts granita biscuits are vegan?? hmmm back to google i go

Also the Leda company have in coles some biscuits that are dairy free & gluten free & they are called Mintons, we reckon they are just as good as Mint Slices!!! Their Tim Tam look alikes are a bit sweet for me, but I'm not a TimTam fan anyway...

OK i just made the rice milk condensed milk and it taste not too bad actually.... but it's not as thick as traditional in a tin condensed milk.... so maybe i should have put more sugar in it?!? the recipe didn't seem to be enough sugar in my mind... but it does tast very sweet......


I'll let it cool and tomorrow I will attempt the vegan cheesecake.

My brother's recipe is:

1 1/2 packs of biscuits for crumbing
1 tin of condensed milk
2 packets of philly cheese
juice and zest of 1lemon
2-3 tablesppons of butter for melting into crumbs for base
1 1/2 tea spoons of gelatin

make the base with crumbed biscuits and melted butter combines. press into a tin or dish, put in fridge til cool.

mix cheese, condensed milk. lemon and gelatine until smootha nd creamy.


pour wet mixture over cooled base and put in fridge over night.

when set, you can put a jelly and fruit layer on top of the cheese layer.


So with my condensed rice milk, i should be good to give it a go!

I'm wondering if Agar Agar will work ok??

Christy, the fake Tim tams are pretty good... but I agree... sweet or soemting.

I could eat a whole packet of tim tams in one sitting quite easily.... but the vegan ones, 2 is usually heaps!

I've wondered if its because i've broken my chocolate addiction now and just don't have the psychological need for chocolate like i used to?!?

Laura, can you have the cream cheese??? I hadn't even thought that I would be able too have it.

We've been dairy free since January here.... it took some getting used too because alot of what I liked to cook with and eat has cheese in it. I love cooking italian creamy pastas so the sweetened evaporated milk might be a go for us... I wonder how it tastes?? Maybe the garlic & basil would change it.... I haven't warmed to rice milk yet.

Christy - Sorry, I should have specified , but my brothers recipe is just his straight normal dairy version\

I use either tofutti brand non dairy cream cheese or Kingland brand soy cream cheese.... but i prefer the taste of the tofutti brand...

nuttlex instead of butter (I use the kosher variety because it doesn't have much soy in it and it tastes more like butter)

if you are fully vegan, you could use Agar Agar as the setting agent.

When I make my own vegan version, i'll post what amounts etc I use.
