Question All those knowledgable with Photoshop.

I want to learn how to only have colour in certain parts of a picture... but I have played around for weeks and weeks and I have no blooming idea how.

    Can someone help?

Maybe either try to explain or point me in the direction of a website with useful guides/instructions?

I figure it can't be too hard as I see photos like it all the time, but i still haven't worked it out!!

    TIA.

Open your picture then copy it, so ctrl a (select all), ctrl c (copy), ctrl n (new), enter, ctrl v (paste). Change that new one into B&W. Then copy & paste it over top of the coloured one. Use the erase tool to remove the B&W parts where you want the colour to be seen. It can be really fiddly, but it looks very cool once it's done. I usually tweak the contrast on the B&W as well, to make it even more dramatic.

Another way of doing it if the area you want to leave coloured is easily selected.

Use the lasso tool to select it the area you would like to reamin coloured.
Inverse the selection int he selection menu
the press CTRL + SHIFT + U to desaturate the remaining area

The magic wand tool is probably easier than the lasoo if the area you want to select is well defined!! You can play around with the levels of the magic wand but it can be tricky to get the right amount. Give it a go you might be suprised how well it works!!
Magnetic lasoo is probably better than the lasoo also - the normal lasoo your using freehand and sometimes looks dodgy and not too smart (IMO). The magnetic lasoo will at least "grab" onto the border/outline of the object your trying to select.

    Yep, easy peasy Maz

Go to the menu & click on Image, the first option is Mode and you can change to greyscale there which is a very simple way of going to black & white. If you want to tweak it a bit, in that same menu click on Adjustments and then Auto Contrast which will adjust your contrast nicely.

Be back in a bit to help with the other part, J wants me!

Oh Maz, I just had a thought, there is a place where you can download an "action" so you can have two photos on the same image really easily. Will PM you details.
