I work in hospitality and I do understand to a certain extent the problems with heating bottles for people so maybe if I explain where I come from it may help make sense.
Although I do believe it is not too hard just use your noggin and help and I certainly would, sometimes it is a real problem. If the person you have asked to heat a bottle has never had a baby or looked after one (as was the case when I was younger) there can be disastrous consequences. It is just too easy to over heat a bottle. This can mean having to then wait for the bottle to cool with a screaming bub or worse, being unaware that the milk is over heated and scalding a babies mouth. This is the big concern with microwaves, they 'spot' heat and if the bottle is not shaken to mix, the sample you test could be cold with potential hot spots throughout the bottle. Secondly, yes, the microwave can ruin the goodies within the ebm. Other heating methods have problems also when in the hands of an inexperienced person.
So the logical thing is to supply some hot water and let mum/carer do the work. I understand if there are health and safety issues with supplying the hot liquid, perhaps in that shopping center there is a rule not allowing it. There may have been a circumstance where someone supplied a cup of hot water and it ended up burning someone. Although it is no different in some ways than supplying a cup of black tea... there may be a different way the law approaches this situation. Unfortunately it smacks of an overly litigious society.
As I said, I am not really agreeing with the policy, common sense should rule and I would certainly do my best to help out a mum/carer in that situation, but I do understand what may be going on there.
I would second the suggestion of taking some hot water in a thermos to warm up the precious EBM. OR what about simply warm water? Surely warm water could heat up a bottle sufficiently without heading into the *dangerous* territory.
I am sorry your poor Ashton suffered from missing out on his milk missymoo84, it is such a shame that something that should have been really simple, is such an issue and you and Ashton have to bear the consequences in such an unpleasant manner. (And now be even more super prepared in the future!!!)
I think I was annoyed too because I dropped him at the house thinking they were going to be staying there, and then I hear they went to the shopping mall for no reason really. I was hoping she would have kept him home, gave him his bottle and put him to bed like he usually has.
