i think it depends on you and your family situation
for me, we started ttc when ds was 12 months... it happened relatively fast (compared to ttc #1) - IMO start trying when it wouldnt be bad if it happened immediately....
Well I wanted a two year gap and it took us 18mth of TTC to have DS so we started right away but not really tring just not using anything to stop it from happening... It took 2 yr of TTC so we ended up with a 3 yr gap and I LOVE it, as I got 3 wonderful years with just DS and then he was old enough to entertain himself when DD came along... we waited a while before TTC DD2 and it only took 3 mths so we got another 3 yrs gap... we want a 4th but wont start to TTC until april 09 so are hoping for a 4 yr gap...
DH and I are planning to start TTC #2 either late Dec/early Jan- when our boy will be 10-11 months. Main reason being, DS #1 was born in the middle of Feb, so I spent the last trimester in the harsh Aussie heat- was very unpleasant.
I'm determined to conceive #2 this coming summer, carry it over winter and have it in spring- like the animals do!! Lol- that way, the weather gets colder as you get bigger (hence the extra padding is welcome), then bub arrives the same time as the sun in spring, leaving a few months to slim down in time for the hot aussie summer again!
That's my plan anyway- although the universe may have other plans for me.... I am still breastfeeding so I don't know how much that will compromise my chances.
Having said that, DS has been sleeping through the night consistently for 3 months now, and I am finding motherhood very cruisey at this stage, so I feel ready to take on another addition. Pregnancy is very taxing on the body, especially if you are breastfeeding- so you will want to make sure you are not still getting up a few times during the night as this will wear the pants out of you- just my opinion, of course!
If you do decide to get pregnant soon- at least you will have 9 months to enjoy your #1 before #2 arrives. I think whenever you feel confident, ready and somewhat rested!!
We have been trying for no#2 since DD was 14mths ... she is now 2.5yrs old ... i'm going through an emotional transition at present that maybe no#2 may never happen for us
Four Mum's out of my small Mother's Group have already all given birth to their 2nd baby ... calculating that they became pregnant about the time their 1st child was about 18mths old (they are between the ages of about 31 to 35yrs old ) !!
If i was in my 20's i would enjoy the child 1st as long as i can and trying when the 1st child is about 2.5 to 4yrs old
Most of my friends in the late 1980's/ early 1990's planned it that they gave birth to their 2nd baby only a few months before the 1st child was starting primary school ... I reckon it's a brilliant plan & idea
Actually my Mum did the same ... my younger sister was born 3mths before i started primary school ... we were always very close ... infact my daughter has her name as her middle name
My ds is 4 months old and we are probably going ttc #2 early next year i've gone off the mini pill because i keep forgetting to take it. if i fall pregnant before that i guess it's meant to be. I'm worried about them being to close together and i love my time alone with ds but i think more like him the better i love being a mum and i think i will cope with them so close together it's abig decision but you will know if it feels right. I'm still breastfeeding so i dont know if it will happen anytime soon. I've heard there are side affects to falling pregnant while pregnancy but i'm not sure about what they are.

We started ttc when #1 was 9 months as we wanted them close in age. I continued breastfeeding right through the pregnancy and had no issues at all. My boys are 18 months apart and I LOVE having them so close together...they're almost 5 and 3.5 now and great mates DS#1 chose to give up breastfeeding the day after #2 was born. If I had my time again I wouldn't change a thing!
It really depends on your situation, what you want and if you had any issues TTC with #1. We wanted about 3 years between ours and given that we conceived DD first try we thought that we had better take that into conideration when TTC#2. This was a good idea as we concieved first try again and we will have almost exactly 3 years between them. However, if we didn't concieve immediately we would have been happy to keep trying.
