Hi Cheshire - welcome! I tried Zumba for the first time tonight, it was good, but I think I preferred Body Jam!
Maz - nice to see you here! I bought cheap ($20, target) shoes to start with so I didn't have an excuse to keep putting off going, they are not great but they will do until I can afford some good ones! My last pair were 2 years old and holey!
Leesa, thanks for the shoe tips, that is a sneaky sneaky way to do it! Last pair of decent shoes i bought were for netball back in 2002! I think they may have been from De Grandi's and they had ankle brace bits in them. My DH hates spending moiney on shoes, he will be very hard to convince.
Eluned, good job on the run! I don't think I can even make thirty seconds at the moment!!
Heather what is Attack like? I am really thinking about trying all of the ones I can for the first few weeks and then deciding on some permanent ones! Coffee would be good too
Hi to everyone I missed!
I did Zumba today, heaps of fun, not sure about it though as the class was so packed you could barely move! Not good if you don't catch on or are uncoordinated, nearly whacked some poor girl in the face a few times! Think Zumba might be more energy consuming but I really, really enjoyed Jam! Maybe I can just do both!
Dragoncookie: Attack is great, hard, still a great work out. They too have low options like Combat. If you want to try a really good calorie burner class try the Spin or RPM. You can go in hop on a bike, follow what they say and just totally zone out. It's alot more of tension changes and riding sitting up and sitting down. Spin is 45mins and RPM is an hour. Spin I think is Les Mills where as RPM is more choreographed by the instructore I think....Leesa??????
I am with you on Zumba, I went to only one class as it was just too packed. I couldn't even see the instructor. I would imagine if you got the moves and had a bit more room to move around, it would be a great work out too.
With Zumba, I'm lucky in that it's in the local community hall so there is heaps of room as there are about 20 people that show up. It would take a lot more than that for us to be squishy.
I had this sudden realisation this morning that I have an awesome set of steps in my backyard that I can use to run up and down on so I've done some stepping today in the lovely sunshine. Going to put the kids in the pram after DS wakes up from his nap and go for a walk to mums (20 minute round trip). I'm hoping to jog some or all of the way.
I wasn't sure about mentioning this but I joined the Michelle Bridges 12 week challenge. Not sure why I wasn't going to mention it, I guess maybe because if I told no one and I didn't get through it then it wouldn't be as embarrassing But now you all know, I have more incentive to work harder
They threw in an extra Zumba class but there must have been at least 40-50 at it still. The trainer was encouraging people to come to JAM and I was thinking NOOOOOO Jam has about 20 people and it was comfortable, and there is only one class a week!
Eluned that's great! How did you go with the run?
I have had a crap day so am looking forward to walking/[attempting to]running it out later on.
The spin classes are all at pretty terrible times for me but I do hope to make it to one soon. Trying to decide on Pump or Combat for tomorrow

Awesome Eluned on signing up with Michelle Bridges. Let me know how it goes .
DC - soooooooo happy to hear those 'I prefer Jam' words . Run out that poo poo day hun and turn it around for the better!
Heather - RPM is a 45 min class, but it can be adapted to go for 1 hr (its up to the gym as to whether they do the 45 min, or the 60 min class (or both). RPM is constructed by trained professionals (physio's, sports coaches etc); whereas Spin is up to the instructor - so it may be hit or miss, depends on how good the instructor is. And again, you are right, ALL of the Les Mills classes have those low impact options. I'd make a point of letting an instructor know prior to the class to ensure they demonstrate those options through out the class. Actually, I entered something in my blog about that exact thing.
Can anyone tell me how I would link my blog into my signuature???
Can you clarify what you mean by low impact options?
The girl that signed me up, followed by the trainer said RPM should be avoided if I am new - I was a bit disappointed as everyone on here has said it would be great! I don't know if I could do it, I used to do about 20mins on the bike and be over it thanks to sore bottom syndrome
To link the blog - go into Settings (up top), edit signature (on the left and down a bit), and copy the link in. You can write "Leesa's Blog" then highlight it, go to the littler button that has a world and a chain link on it, and put the URL in there. That way it comes up as hyperlink text and not a web address. You might have to double it onto your FCS line as you can only have 6 lines.
Thanks DC - I'll modify the kids so they can share a line .
Low impact basically means keeping one foot on the floor at all times. So instead of jogging you would be marching - you virtually take the 'jump' out of every move. You'd still be moving in the same direction as everyone else in the class. I think give the bike a few more shots, to build up your resistance to 'bike seat butt' - and build up to about half an hour in length. When you can do that - give RPM a crack. You can always keep the resistance dial on a low setting and continue along to the best of your ability - I'm a bit shocked they said to avoid RPM for that reason though!
Our Zumba classes have a max of 30 people i think, which i good because you still have enough room to move around.
Our instructor was great she made the class a lot of fun.
I went back for my re assessment today & they have added more minutes & levels to my work out. It's nice to know i'm doing well enough for them to do that.
Bike is not so bad. My backside is a bit sore but I am sure it will get better. Love how high the heartrate goes, holey moley I could feel the sweat within seconds, it was great, maybe I will like spin/rpm after all, once i can build up to it.
How has everyone else gone over the weekend? I think I overdid it at combat yesterday. Today has been something like "Well, helll-O Trapezius/Lats!, Nice to know you still exist", heaps of fun though!
Les Mills released the new releases in SA today and I did Attack.......FREAKIN AWESOME!!! Toward the end, although I knew I was working hard it was sooooo much fun (music wise) I just didn't give a to$$!!!
Highly recommended!!
I know that feeling DC - it took me a good 48 hrs to recover after not using those specific for some time. Just goes to show how specific the different classes are from one to the other . Do some stretches for your upper back hun, and if you have a wheat bag lay on one of those warm suckers!!
nooooo! ICE ICE BABY! You're hurting because you've heated those babies up! Ice, rest, heat, stretch, ice, rest. I promise! (sorry Lees!)
DC glad ou enjoyed it! I loathed the bike for so long, now I can actually DO it again, I don't mind it!
Leesa - so glad you enjoyed the new release! I am looking forward to the day I get the all clear to do a class!
Cheshire - yay for upping the anti! That's a great sign!
AFM - I've been sick the last few days so no exercise And I'm getting grumpy for it! I'm hoping to hit the gym tomorrow afternoon - depending on what time my parents arrive. Looking forward to Tuesday's PT session and then I have a massage booked for Tuesday afternoon! YAY! So excited! My shoulder will hopefully be fixed!
Didn't really end up jogging to mums on Friday, just a quick walk. Yesterday spent a couple of hours in the garden, which was great just being outside. Today the weather is grey and looks like rain so I am hoping to get out for a walk this afternoon without getting wet. The kids are refusing to sleep so I think I need some fresh air. If not, I'll do the xtrainer tonight. I have the edges of a cold, runny nose, sore throat so even though I don't feel like doing any exercise, I feel like I should. Might try and do some stretching instead. My body needs to stretch. Am I bad for taking the easy option out?
Popped into my local gym this morning to ask about memberships. The girl was really nice and helpful and the gym looks pretty good. They also have a creche which looked good too. The membership is a $49 one off admin fee, then it's $15.99 a week for 12 months. Does that sound reasonable? It's certainly cheaper than my pilates class alone. Their class timetable looks pretty good too. Only thing is they don't really have a dedicated pilates class. The girl said they have Body Balance which is pilates, yoga and tai chi. Anyone got feedback on that? Otherwise they have all the other Les Mills - Bodystep, Body Pump, Attack, Combat, and RPM. They also have Zumba There is no joining fee in August but apparently it's normally $299. So I think I'll talk to DH tonight and see what he thinks. I'm thinking of doing a class in the evening, maybe two evenings and one on the weekend and potentially one during the week and I can use the creche (which is $2 per child per hour). What do you guys think?
Also, what's the go on Heart Rate Monitors? Is Polar a good brand? Do I even need one? What features should it have?
Eluned - just a quick post as about to go out. That is a brilliant cost for the gym membership!!! Also, no, not the easy option out as if you need a stretch and don't, you risk more damage. But then, you know my stance on stretching For HRM, Polar is known for being good. I have two and love it. Although, I did recently have to send mine for repair and there is only ONE authorised repairer in Australia which is located in SA. When I rang, I was quoted a 5 week turn around. I paid the extra $20 to get priority service and got it back withing the week. Whether or not you need one depends on why you're asking. I use mine to monitor my HR and also calculate my calories burnt. I'll come back later if you have specific Q's but going out for dinner for Dad's Birthday.

Sorry, we'll have to agree to disagree on that one MG . If I stopped and iced after feeling like that from a workout I think I would have frost bite lol. But certainly, if one is injured I certainly recommend the REST principle. I've always complimented it by continuing movement, gentle walking, stretching for the following 24-48 hrs. This is a classic example of increasing the weights in Body Pump for a class then getting the 'ouch I can't walk feeling' the following day...but thats just a general principle of group fitness taught from within Les Mills.
Sometimes stretching can be quite tough Eluned, and it helps prepare the body for the next work out (always thinking one step ahead eh?). Not to mention assist in its restoration towards recovery.
As for Polars - I have the FT40 and DH has one (a basic model which still gives off info like cal's burn't, heart rates etc. Keep in mind they have an accuracy rate of +/- 20% (according to the booklet mine comes with). But it certainly is a good guide to see if you're hitting your goals. I found it a great way to motivate myself into working harder by trying to burn more calories than the previous session - and that worked for me. Now being UTD I can use it to set off an alarm should my heart rate peak too high, for my own comfort (about 92% at peak intervals) - so it keeps me 'in a safe zone'. I love it and I honestly attrribute my weight loss success to the Polar, but thats just me .
I can't believe the only repairer for Polar is in MY State!!!! SA usually have nothing lol - but we've got a Polar repairer lol, go figure!
Maz: Whoo Hoo on the Ticker. Any movement is good movement and lugging sleepers around is almost a mini Pump class Have a great 1st night tomorrow night Maz!!
Eluned: That's a good price for a gym..will they do it cheaper if you pay upfront for a year? They have Body Balance at my gym, I haven't done it yet. The people I know who do it like it. Polar is definitely a reputable brand for HR monitors.
Leesa: The new Attack release is this weekend for Victoria. I am very nervous Lol!! Also, the RPM that is done on Saturday morning at gym is a 1hr class, that's why I thought it was always an hour, thanks for explaining it.
Well, I am feeling stiff in a great way for the first time in a very long time, this was thanks to a very hard and fast Attack class on Sunday. Whoaa it was fast and hard going and I gave it 200%!! I went to Pump this morning and increased my weight slightly so that will probably not ease my stiffness.
As I mentioned above to Leesa, the new Attack release is this weekend, and if Sunday was anything to go by, ooohhh I am going to be hurting even more
I am really impressed with our Pump instructor, she watches everyone and tells people when they are doing the wrong way and how to do it the right way all the while she is demonstrating She also takes Spin, she is really funny..a loves her no pain no champagne saying.
Enjoy the rest of your week everyone..I'll be back
Heather - you'll get to the final track of Attack, after thinking you've got nothing left to give from an awesome Track 8, you'll hear the music of Track 9 and go totally off. Seriously, I haven't enjoyed a track 9 this much for a long time.....(think Ike and Tina Turner ).....!
Maz - love the ticker! how many sessions of gym / exercise do you plan to do weekly? Can we have permission to give you a virtual kick in the butt should you not have good reason for sticking to your plan .
