    I want a laparoscopy...

I've got an appointment with my FS on Monday, getting some test referrals mainly. DH has convinced me to speak to him about a sizeable lump I have on my right side - I've ignored it over the past 12 months, as I'm pretty sure it's on the ovary but no-one's said anything during scans. It's causing considerable pain, not ALL the time but if I move the wrong way or if I'm ovulating on that side, which is why I believe it's on the ovary.

The thing is, given that it hasn't been mentioned before, and I am very large, I don't just wanna get another scan, I don't think it'll show up. A friend of mine, who is a dancer, was a size 8 when the cysts on her ovaries were seen on a scan - they said she had 5 on one and 7 on the other. When she had her lap, they removed 12 on one and 17 on the other! So even for her, it wasn't all showing up.

I know I can walk in there and tell him I want a laparoscopy. I definitely think it's warranted, given my history and size, and especially given the size of the lump. But what are the magic words to get him to bypass the scan and just do the surgery? Are there any magic words?

If you have phi, you don't need magic words unless your fsnthinksnits unecessary. Maybe say scan is waste of valuable resources? Not sure
GL I'm sorry I can't offer wise words

Keike, I am not sure how large you are but many fs won't do a lap on gorgeous cuddly gals like us because of the risks involved. My own fs won't do one on me except as an absolute last resort (my BMI is about 36-37). Just mentioning it as it may be a factor. Hope your appointment goes well x

Oh dammit, I didn't realise it might work against me! I'm 50-something. I know, huge, I'm quite short so it doesn't help. Maybe he'll book it knowing I can't have the op til August and I'm on Optifast?

Meh must be your big heart taking up extra room!

It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask him!

    Good luck x

Ps have you had an internal scan? That would provide a better view....

Yeah, I've had many internal scans. I have a retroverted uterus so internals the way to go anyway. They've mentioned cysts before, but never seem concerned enough to wanna operate.

I've decided to name it. I'm calling it Lumpy the Too-Ma. Lumpy's being a pain in the ovary today

Have you been diagnosed with pcos? If so, maybe that's why they're not concerned!!!

Yeah, I've been diagnosed with PCOS. Surely the cysts shouldn't get THAT big though? Maybe I'll just go in and throw a tantrum

Regardless of your size, at some point a lap may be the only option you have left to conclusively diagnose what is happening in there. I think it is certainly worth a shot to ask anyway.

Definately ask, but don't be suprised if he asks for more scans if he agrees. Doctors like to have at least some idea of what they are likely to find before they go in.

That's exactly it Trill, I think we've learned all we're gonna learn from scans, the next step is to cut me open and look at it for themselves! Hopefully I can convince him - I doubt he'd do it if he didn't feel it was worth it, given my size and also the blood issue. Apparently bleeding can be a problem in this surgery. Oh well, suppose I'll find out on Monday

I've had two laps and never had any bleeding apart from shedding uterine lining after the D&C. In terms of serious bleeding, I think the risk would be really minimal because they only use 3 tiny 1cm incisions and there certainly isn't any blood on your abdomen afterwards and anything they remove inside they cauterize it. But I understand your concern about it.

Trill the risk of bleeding is higher in obese women

My BMI is in the mid, probably high 30's? Bleeding was never mentioned to me at all?

My fs mentioned it and I have read it elsewhere. The anesthetic is also a risk.

When I went for my D&C, a doctor took me into a room and spent 10 minutes telling me I was basically going to bleed to death because I was overweight, only I might not be so lucky as to die and might end up a vegetable if I didn't let them give me a blood transfusion
