To D&C or not?? Help please

    hello everyone,

yesterday was the dreaded day where after one very small spot of blood, went to get an Ultra Sound and found that that my little one went to see the angels. THe Dr who gave us the news at the Ultra sound place said we would most likely wait to "pass it" and the be sent for an US to see everything is gone. However, he said we should go back and see our GP who I had seen that morning. DH and I went back to the GP (a different one as mine had gone home already) was given a ref letter to go to emergency and get a D&C. The GP advised that some hospitals will just send you home as I appear to be "no or low risk" I've has some cramping but no big blood loss, heck no blood loss other than the little brown spot in my underwear. I was 7 1/2 wks pregnant. I was told to go to Westmead as opposed to Blacktown as Blacktown was for sure going to send me home.

I had a read about D&C..is it a procedure I really need? i read after effects can affect future pregnancies if not done properly..is it standard to just get it done when you have a m/c?

Any help would be good, is it better to let nature run its course or go wait at the hospital and get a D&C and hopefully they will perform it and not send me home?!?!

Any help or comment would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Moose

Im so sorry for the loss of your angel SM

I personally chose a dc because I didn't want to be waiting for it all to happen and my body showed no signs of doing anything on it's own.

I had my dc done by my ob thru a private hospital so I'm not sure about the process via the public system.

    Big hugs

I am very sorry for your loss

I think you may find they won't rush you through for a D & C anyway. As you are not bleeding heavily they may be more likely to encourage you to 'pass it naturally'.

Very sorry ...Take care of yourself

Sorry to hear of your loss. I had a D&C in a public hospital, but I was MC in the hospital and had a huge amount of blood loss so I was taken straight to have the D&C. You don't have to have one, you can wait but if you do you need to just keep an eye on your bloodloss and if you get worried at all then call an ambulance or go to the ER.

I am so sorry for your loss

In most cases the pregnancy will pass on its own without a D&C. In my experience I opted for a D&C even though the pregnancy was passing without incidence, because psychologically I needed an end date for the miscarriage but I wish I hadn't because it increased the physical pain, was inconvenient for my family, and involved a general anaesthetic which always carries a risk. However everyone's circumstances are different and there are pros and cons to both expectant management and surgical intervention. I hope you can find the right answer for you

sorry to hear about your little one. I have had 3 miscarriages but they have all been natural, haven't needed a d&c (thankfully because I wasn't keen on the idea), you don't have to decide straight away, as long as you aren't bleeding heavily you can wait & see what happens

I am so very sorry for your loss hun I have had 3 mc, 2 around 4-5 weeks and 1 when i was meant to be 12 weeks. I had a D&C with my first (after months of being really sick because it turned out there was still remnants of the pg in my uterus) and with my last which was a missed mc at 12 weeks. The other 5 week mc was a complete and uncomplicated natural mc.
It's completely up to you, have you started bleeding? If you haven't started passing anything i would consider medical intervention, but it's up to what you want and can handle emotionally.
I had a tiny amount of spotting and went in and had a scan done and found my bub had gone, and had been gone for 3 weeks. I was devastated, and went home. Nothing happened the next day so i opted for a D&C the following day, as i was worried about infection and couldn't emotionally handle a natural mc.
Everybody is different, but the pains the same
I am so so sorry for your loss xoxoxoxoxoxoxox

    So sorry for your loss

When I lost my baby at 9 weeks, I opted to let nature take it's course. It really is a personal decision. I had family telling me I should I have a D&C, but for me it didn't feel like the right thing. I wanted to be at home, didn't want a GA plus it was an emotional thing too. I had a scan once the bleeding stopped that showed it had all gone. I hope all goes well

sydney moose, so terribly sorry for your loss.

All my m/c I have opted for nature to take it's course. However, the majority of my m/c were early - around 5-6 weeks and from the time I started spotting it then was like a heavy period almost immediately.

This is such a personal decision to make - only you will know what is best for you. x

I'm so sorry to hear this news SM.
For my first m/c @ 12ish weeks I wish i'd had a d&c because it was excruciating but I didn't want to have an invasive procedure that has it's risks. The 2nd one at about 8 weeks wasn't painful at all. It was like the usual period cramps. If you think you can mentally cope it might be better to avoid a d&c and let your body do things naturally. If you've had some spotting hopefully it won't take too long for things to happen. Although saying that I know how hard it is to be in limbo like that and to just want things over with. Do what you feel is right for you hun. Good luck

sorry this has happened to you SM xx

I had a similar situation at 9wk, just some spotting but had lost my baby, so I ended up having a D&C a few days later, I found it fine. I have also had some early miscarriages, they were painful and heavy bleeding and to tell the truth would have preferred a D&C. Its painful enough emotionally without the drawn out physical pain but thats just my opinion, its a personal choice. People have D&Cs all the time for various reasons and they rarely cause any problems so don't be scared, its a very small procedure.
My D&C was done privately so I'm not sure if the public hospitals would make you wait a long time. Could you ring the emergency department and ask them if they would do it?

Best of luck darl, take some time to decide if you need xx

Oh SM i am so sorry for you loss! I would always go to westmead as its where the bigger better facilities are!

I had a D&C at 12weeks for a missed MC. It was terrible, sorry but honest.

I had to have a 2nd D&C about 3 weeks later and it was fine...but they ruptured my uterus....

BUT why i have told you these horrid things is to say that i went on to fall pregnant again easily and quickly and have had three healthy bubs since. So try not to worry about the side effects if you choose to go down that path....

Honestly...not sure whatid choose if i was there again.....

Sending you much strength and love!
    be kind to yourself!

I'm so so sorry hun to hear this.
I would probably let this pass naturally at this stage. But if you do go to hossy - I'd def go westmead! (I'm sure you remember my story...)
Big hugs and thinking of you and DH. xx

It really is a personal decision.

For me, I had a mc at 7 weeks with no bleeding. I needed it to be over so opted for a d&c.

In Melbourne there is a clinic at The Women's you can attend that will assist. I'm not sure what is available in Sydney.

    Hope you are ok.

    Sorry for your loss
I had a mc at 9 weeks and I wanted to let nature run it's course... My GP was very pushy about having a D & C but I wanted my body to do it.
Personally I felt my body would bounce back better if I did it naturally iykwim.
She insisted that I have u/s to ensure It was complete.
I do understand that for some people though, they just want it over and gone with.
    Take care of yourself
