Sorry, it's not a dumb question. I should have thought about it a bit more before I posted it. The correlation between saliva and fertile CM is that the hormones associated with ovulation are supposed to cause the ferning which should be detectable in those particular secretions at the right time in the cycle.

I didn't get much fertile CM but still got ferning in the saliva with Maybe Baby. I guess it depends on why you are not getting much fertile CM. If for example, you are on some kind of medicine which has a drying effect - something like Sudafed -you may have reduced saliva and mucus generally so won't find the Maybe Baby of much help. I know that Clomid affects the CM but not sure about the saliva aspect.

I imagine though that if you are relying on the ferning alone as a sign of ovulation, it may not be as reliable as for example, using an OPK either alone or in conjunction with the Maybe Baby. As some of the girls have mentioned, you can get ferning at other times and it might lead you up the garden path a bit.
