Thread: Maybe Baby

    Default Maybe Baby

Is there anyone out there that has used the maybe baby mini microscope tester? The one that shows ferning during your fertile part of your cycle.

I have been using it this month it had started to show ferning and then 2days later stopped and is now showing non-fertile period. I am currently on clomid which has made me ovulate. I am very confused and do not know what is going on. Could this mean that I have fallen pregnant? Has anyone out there had any similar results?

    Many thank Helen

    Helen,

I use Maybe Baby too (have just posted another question about it) and last month I got ferns for only a few days, but this month i've had some sort of ferns 7 days in a row!! really don't know if this is right or not though?? also, some months I got no ferns but know I ovulated through CM - therefore perhaps it's not an entirely accurate thing to use?

Sorry I can't be more help!

    Ok
    Maybe Baby

Partial Ferns show when you are in your Most Fertile Stage
Full Ferns show when you should be "o" 16-24hrs later.

As you can show signs or "Most Fertile" at any stage of your cycle you should take a partial fern as GO FOR IT and Bed Away.

Its all very confusing. The month I did use it I fell pregnant, so don't give up on it...

    Hiya girls

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I got sucked into buying a Maybe Baby microscope from ebay and used it a few times getting the fern patterns at the most rediculous times of my cycle and to no avail.. to cut a long story short i have ended up seeing a fertility specialist (my sydney IVF doctor) and when i asked him about it, he laughed and said they are the biggest waste of money and very unreliable, my GP also said the same thing as well!

The more effective and accurate option is the ovulation predictor kits. You can buy these sticks on ebay for a very very cheap price.. ? think about 10 dollars for 12 or something like that.. they are similar to HPT's and just wee on them when you think you are going to ovulate or middle of cycle and two lines is 'go for it' and one line 'don't bother'.. BUT in saying that i do kow a few people who did fall using it, but when i questioned my doctor about this, he just put it down to good old fashioned 'luck'...

    Best of luck

    my GP said the opposite

I brought one off ebay for 35 and it worked the month we got it. I had a Full Fern the day before "o" and same with the girl I brought it off...who I know has given birth. (I was temping also)

It is designed to pinpoint your most fertile days... they don't guarntee that it works.

I agree in some aspects that the OPK is the best way. But if some girls are like me, my urine doesn't detect the *whatever you call it* High Enough to give me a good enough result. So I never knew if I was in a fertile stage or "o"

Just don't rely on it as your only source of checking for an upcoming "O". Your best way is through CM, Cervix Postition.

Just do what you girls think is best for you!!!

    Hi there Helen,

I am also taking Clomid, My IVF specialist told me not to use Maybe Baby as it detects other hormones also not just LH Surge, he told me to stick to OPK kits or use nothing at all and just look at my mucas... Maybe Baby will not help if you are on Clomid and im now also taking Metformin.. so I definately cannot use Maybe Baby now...

Thank-you so much for all your replies.

Bel thank-you for the info re taking clomid. I am on my 2nd cycle of taking it. I ovulated the first cycle and this was chkd with blood tests, but the dr said that I didnt need them this month as we had established the right amount of clomid, so I thought using maybe baby would help. Oh well it was worth a try.

Shellstar76- I brought mine from the chemist it cost me I think between $70-90. My OBGYN said that they did work, so I guess there is a lot of conflicting info out there. Best thing to do is type - maybe baby fertility into your search engine and read all about it from there, to enable you to make an informed decision.

    Hey Helen.

Happy to help. I too dont have to have the day 1 and day 21 blood tests as we know 50mg of Clomid does work.

If you ever want to chat on IM, I have yahoo.

Best wishes for this cycle for you!

I used this for a while too earlier this year but once I went onto IVF, I gave it to someone else.

I found that it DID detect the most fertile time of the month for me and that it was pretty spot on with my own observations and the OPKs I was using. It was useful to have another confirmation in that regard.

If however you are not getting fertile mucus (or very much that is detectable) it might be difficult using this device. As the girls mentioned, Clomid can interfere with the production of CM so if you are on that, I wouldn't be using Maybe Baby. The OPKs would be the way to go.

Melbo (or others who may know) - you mentioned that if you don't get detectable CM (that's me) that Maybe Baby might be difficult to use. Why is this? I don't notice any fertile CM yet got great ferns on Maybe Baby around the middle of my cycle. How does your saliva result on Maybe Baby relate to detectable CM?
Sorry if this is a dumb question!

    Bethany,

Sorry, it's not a dumb question. I should have thought about it a bit more before I posted it. The correlation between saliva and fertile CM is that the hormones associated with ovulation are supposed to cause the ferning which should be detectable in those particular secretions at the right time in the cycle.

I didn't get much fertile CM but still got ferning in the saliva with Maybe Baby. I guess it depends on why you are not getting much fertile CM. If for example, you are on some kind of medicine which has a drying effect - something like Sudafed -you may have reduced saliva and mucus generally so won't find the Maybe Baby of much help. I know that Clomid affects the CM but not sure about the saliva aspect.

I imagine though that if you are relying on the ferning alone as a sign of ovulation, it may not be as reliable as for example, using an OPK either alone or in conjunction with the Maybe Baby. As some of the girls have mentioned, you can get ferning at other times and it might lead you up the garden path a bit.

Have I helped at all or just clouded the issue further? :-s

    Cheers,

    Mel

Yes, that makes sense. My problem is that I have never got a + on OPK's, not even a faint line or anything. Combine this with little detectable CM and I haven't got much to go on to detect O. I tried the Maybe Baby to see if that would be any help. It's the only indication I have seen of fertility (other than O pain at around the same time). I'm at a loss as to why I'm not getting a result using OPKs as I believe I am using them correctly ](*,) . I am getting reasonably regular AF's too so surely I am Oing at some stage?
Yes, yes, I guess I should start temping. Didn't want to do this but feel I may have to. I was hoping my wonderful ferns between CD 14-17 could be relied on!!!

Hmmm ... I see what you mean. OPKs are usually pretty good at detecting that LH surge and you should definitely see a result from that. It is possible to have periods and not be ovulating.

I don't know how long you have been trying but there is a blood test that your doctor can do on day 21 of your cycle (assuming you have a 28 day cycle so the actual day may vary) which will detect whether or not you have ovulated. That little test may help a bit ... at least you will know whether it's happening and then you can start looking for the right time.

Maybe have a chat to your GP?

I never actually took temps but some girls find them reliable. I did chart my cycle, using a guide I found in a book on the Billings method. It did help to work out my cycle over a period of time.

    Good luck!

    Default Maybe Baby

I am thinking of getting maybe baby - but being $70 I am wondering if it is a waste of money? It is saliva based, I have no idea how it works but thinking it is worth a shot?

I've got a different brand, but I reckon it's definitely worth it! I reckon I'd have skipped DTD the night we conceived this bub if not for the fact I'd had a heap of "almost there" ferning that day. And the next, I had full ferning, so I knew I'd ovulated Once you get the hang of it, it's so easy!
