GP worries..

Ok.. Well.. Where to start..

This is my first pregnancy and medically speaking I am really unsure of how things are meant to go..

My worry and questions is about my GP..

When I first took the home preg test and it came up poss I went straight to my GP who performed a urine test to confirm and also a blood test for rubella etc..
A week later I went back for the results to find I am in perfect health.. I had a few questions like where to go from here etc and was told to go back to see him in a month (which is next week) I asked about an ultrasound and he said not until 16 weeks.. which just sounds wrong to me as I always thought it was at 12 weeks??
He also never told me about foods to avoid, coffee etc - but I now know due to reading.

My question is Do I need to go back to him or can I ring the hospital I want to give birth at and go from there??

I really think this deserves more attention than he is giving.. Or am I just been paranoid??

Hi, some doctors are really crap. With this pregnancy, I went to a local GP to have it confirmed, and he told me that most pregnancies end in miscarriage so to come back when I was 13 weeks gone. Thats it. End of story. Sent me for a blood test to see if it was positive. So then a couple of weeks later, I went to another doctor, who then referred me to my OB and sent me for a whole heap of blood tests. I didn't have a scan at 12 weeks, its only really needed if you were wanting to test for Downs and other medical stuff. (I've never had a scan at 12 weeks with either pregnancy). I only have a scan at 18-20 weeks, even though I'm through the private system. I would suggest going to another GP and he can point you in the right direction. I don't know much about the public system I'm afraid, so can't really advise you about that direction. I have already booked into my hospital, paid the deposit etc and filled in all my forms if that helps any :-)

First of all congratulations and wishing you a H&H pg. The 12 week scan is not compulsory as it's a test for downs syndrome and if you're not over 30 they tend to not even mention it. You also have blood test to match up the results. You will need to see your GP again as they will need to give you a referral to the hospital you would like to go to depending if it's private or public. It's all a learning game but you'll get there and if you have any questions BB is a great place to come to.

Thanks very much for your prompt replies!! Has helped to settle my mind a little!! Im 26 so perhaps thats why he hasn't suggested a 12 week scan..

I will go back to my GP next week and ask for a referal to Hawkesbury.. Not really sure wether to go public or private though.. My cousin went there public with her first 2 but private with her 3rd because she lost her 2nd child to SIDS and she said there really wasn't that much of a difference..

Has anyone else been to Hawkesbury Hospital in Windsor NSW??
