Thanks ladies! Glad I'm not the only one struggling to see clear boy bits! We didn't find out with DS, so I have nothing to compare to other than the ones I've found on google which show a very clear scrotum and penis. But then I also think that I can kinda see three little lines - if you look at what might be the base of the penis, there is one clear line, another to the top of it and then a smaller shorter one just about it... But like the penis these are clear cut either.

I think I'll ask my OB for another peak at our next appt. I'm still wishing we didn't decide to find out though, I think even if we get a clear cut answer down the track I'm going to have doubts!

It's not the best pic in the world to make a determination from, but I noticed you went to Women's Ultrasound Malvern. That's where we go too, and the advantage there is that they're not sonographers, rather they're radiologists/obstetricians (depending on their specialities), so they're doctors specialising in scanning rather than technicians. I'd be tempted to go with what they've said, but that said, if your Ob has scanning equipment too, no harm in asking for a second look! If there's no definitive answer, go get a 3D scan if you really want to know Good luck!!

I had three ultrasounds over 4 weeks this pg (circa weeks 19, 20 and 22) to check different things - and trying to nut out (excuse the pun) whether we were having a boy or a girl!!

First two were too close to call - there was something visible, but they couldn't tell whether it was a labia or a scrotum, and no penis was showing! They suspected boy, but couldn't tell for certain.

Third time, they thought it was a girl (because there appeared to be a line in the middle, suggesting labia) but then DS2 decided to do a wee and the penis revealed itself plain as day ... if they hadn't kept looking those few seconds, I would have been told we were definitely having a pigeon pair, rather than two little men!

But we kept the jury out and didn't buy any girl or boy things until we had received some much more definitive confirmation! Because you never know ...

My SIL was told she was a having a boy on two separate ultrasounds and so they were very suprised when out popped my niece.......this was only last year.

We decided to keep it as a surprise and at the checkup after my 20 week ultrasound my midwife told me of a birth in the hospital that week of a surprise boy, after the mum kitted out the nursery & and a cupboard full of clothes in pink....also last year

Even with the aid of modern technology baby gender is still on educated guess.

Seams mother nature is all for waiting and seeing on delivery day.

We found out this time. For us it really dosn't matter either way as we already have one boy and one girl. I'll happy if it's healthy. But as a safety precaution we are still buying neutral clothes and not decorating anything gender specific we'll wait and see.

This happened to an old friend in 1999. Was told Girl and it was a boy.

My cousin was told 'girl' and stocked up accordingly... poor Igor wore butterflies and fairies for the first few months of his life

One of the mums at playgroup had a girl a few months ago and was told she was having a boy. She didn't buy anything new for the baby as she already had all the clothes she needed from her DS.
It was her 20 week scan she was told boy. She had to have a scan at around 36weeks and the couldn't get a clear look then either. I don't think she was ever that confident about what she was having.
If you really want to know I would book a 4D scan. That's what I did this pregnancy as once I found they thought it could be a girl, I wanted to know for sure!

I find it hard that they can get it wrong. Sure some babies don't exactly make it easy, legs closed etc, so if that where the case I think going back for a second look is imperative if you plan to decorate or buy clothes etc, or if gender swaying has been on the table, and you just "have" to know

When we had our recent 20 week scan, there is no doubt that there is a penis and scrotum there, and with our young lady, the three lines. they where just so obvious, and so different .

That's the thing, I've seen other peoples pics and they are really obvious. Ours, not so much - when I look closely sometimes I think I can see bits of both. have a look and see what you think

Black Rose is right- with a girl it's not the lack of a discernible scrotum or penis that means 'girl' but the three white stripes. I'd trust the 20 week one over the 18 because the 18 week one sounds like a bit of a guess wheras in the 20 week anatomy scan the sonographer knows exactly what to look for and the equipment is much more high tech- it has to be because it's medical grade and designed to measure everything and detect anything that might be amiss.

That said, the baby needs to allow the sonographer to get a good look. This means no hands, legs in the way etc. a good sonographer should tell you if they couldn't get a clear picture though.
