I have recently had a load of free time, so I have read a fair few books in the last three-ish weeks!
I finally finished The Book Thief - AMAZING. If you get a chance, please read.
Stardust - Neil Gaiman
Loved this book so much. Ah, just magical. A fairy-tale for grown ups. They did make a movie of this but the book is just soo much better. If you like fantasy/faerie stuff, I would highly recommend this.
The Secret Lives of Dresses - Erin McKean
Enjoyable. About a girl who takes over her grandma's vintage dress shop. I particularly liked it because there is a beautiful little vintage dress shop near where I live and I could just picture that shop as the shop in the book. Your standard love story/chick lit, but an enjoyable read nonetheless.
Purfume: The Story of A Murderer - Patrick Suskind
Loved it. A sensory journey through word. Man with a superhuman nose starts murdering in search of the perfect scent. Strange but oh so good.
Breakfast at Tiffany's - Truman Capote
Meh. Was ok. Pretty sure everyone knows the story lol. Movie was better than the book imo. I guess I was expecting more out of it? But anyway, was a quick read. Ok I guess.
Love and Punishment - Wendy Harmer
I quite enjoyed this one - it was given to me, I didn't think I'd like it but I actually did. Was an easy read, quite funny. About a woman going through a break up after her partner of 5 years runs off with a woman 12/13 years his senior. Everything crashes down when her little revenge incident comes to light, but (as with most stories) all ends well.
High Fidelity - Nick Hornby
Loved it. About Rob, a loser-ish guy who owns a somewhat failing record store. He decides to do some soul searching and contacts his old girlfriends after his long term girlfriend leaves him. Funny, sad, and sweet. Lots of music references. I really enjoyed this, and would recommend it to anyone who has recently gone through a break up (al la myself... same as the above book).
I think that's all... as I said, I had a heck of a lot of free time, so I scoffed down as many books as possible.
Book thief is one of my all time fav books. Along with thousand splendid suns, and the kite runner.
Perfume is a great book, although I think I would not reccommend reading wehn pregnant, his descriptions threw my stomach into knots when I first read it :
At the moment Im reading 'The Five People You Meet In Heaven'.
Its pretty good, although its playing havoc with my dreams.
Just finished the 19th wife, which is about the LDS. Great murder whodunnit plots. Also read House Rules by Jodi Picoult. I normally read one of her books after a heavy book..
I'm reading the Twilight saga still. Getting through it though. And I'm enjoying it a lot more this time around.
You know what I miss? A book that is just WOW. Like when Memoirs of a Geisha came out. Or Harry Potter. Whether you're a fan or not, there was a book out that everyone just "had" to read. Or maybe I'm just wearing my ear plugs and am not listening :P Sorry, went a bit off topic there, but just thinking aloud.
Beansbeans, I read the 19th wife last year and loved it too. The Book Thief is one of my favorite novels too.
PakRag, have you read "The girl who kicked the hornet's nest"? A lot of people have also been talking about Jonathan Franzen's Freedom, and The Slap by Tsiolkas. I haven't read either, but I know they're big. Another that's on the bestsellers right now that sounds really interesting is called A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.
