How long should a bank dispute take?

A few weeks ago some money appeared in my bank account from some random place that I knew nothing about, so I rang the bank. They couldn't give me enough information for me to know where it came from so I lodged a dispute. Essentially the bank had to go to them & find out if it was a mistake etc. This was Friday not last week, but the one before & still I haven't heard anything even though the bank said they would call.

Has anyone lodged a dispute with a bank before? How long did it take? It just bothers me that there is this money sitting there from goodness knows where when it more than likely belongs somewhere else.

You will just have to keep ringing them about it. I don't know how long it should take, but I know that no one ever calls you back when they should so you will have to keep on top of them. When I had cc fraud on my card it took 6 weeks for them to rectify it - not sure if bank processes are similar or not.

I remember someone posting about lodging a dispute after an ATM withdrew money, but didn't actually pay it out & I think they said it took around 3 weeks? That was for the money to go back in their account I think.

I disputed a debit that came out of an account that I didn't know anything about and it probably took about 6 weeks for it to be resolved. Just stay in touch with them and document any conversations you have. They followed up everything in writing with me which was good.

These things can take a ridiculous amount of time sometimes (and can be resolved almost instantly at other times!).

I would keep a log of all dates, enquiries etc, to cover your own butt (always ask for call reference numbers too).

I was told 6 weeks when I lodged a dispute with my bank about a cc transaction. It only took about 3.

I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago too Sarah, someone was putting money into our account every fortnight, and the same amount each time. I called the bank to let them know and they said there was nothing they could do until the person depositing the amount told them, even though they knew who it was (they told me his name and asked if i knew him)
I think i had 4 payments go in before it stopped

Arrrrrgh so frustrating. I just got off the phone from the bank & they are sooo not helpful. They gave me a company name which is a holiday appartment complex in Brisbane. They tell me that I have to contact them directly about it, they can't dispute it from their end, even though that's what I was told a few weeks ago that they could.

Basically I was told "there's a website called yellow pages dot com you can find them on there"

So now the money just has to sit there for ???? some amount of time until they decide to dispute it from the other end. VERY ANNOYED.

Yeah Sarah, that's what happened with us. We just had to wait till this person worked out where the money wasn't going.
erta: Could you call and ask to speak to someone in accounts or the manager, and explain that their money is going into your account? They don't need to know any of your details, just give them the start date if you have it.

It was only a once off Nic, my guess is that it was a deposit of some description being refunded seeing as it's a holiday place. That is, if my info is right... The ABN they supplied me with (got a letter from the bank tonight) doesn't exist in the govt database so I have no idea if I'm barking up the wrong tree with this company.

Doudou, it's just over $100, so not heaps but I just fel really uncomfortable having someoone else's money sitting in my account.

When I worked it out it was just under triple the money LOL, didn't calculate it properly this morning! So now they have transferred close on $500 to me for no reason.

DH called the bank this morning & got no further than I did. He did manage to track down the ABN which I couldn't & has spoken with the Financial Controller of the company, they are trying to work it all out now. What a pain.

Far out. That sucks - especially if you weren't in a great financial position it would be hard to have that money just sitting there. I hope you can figure it out soon!

Oh very very annoying. The company details the bank gave us were incorrect, they said it was a resort in QLD when it turns out it was a Kwik Kopy in QLD. DH has sorted it out & the money has been transferred back to them. Apparently the company was unimpressed... Hello your mistake, we were honest enough to fix it.
