Cutting your hair - was it something you regretted or best thing ever?

I've been considering cutting my hair off. Saying that, I've probably been thinking about it for about three years

I have medium length hair. Super thick. I've always found it more manageable to be long because I can tie it up, get it off my neck, etc. I'm not one for styling daily, nor do we have the budget for product.

But I've been thinking about having it short and wondering if it will be a lot of work. Shortest I've had it recently is a bob and it was okay because my hairdresser thinned it out. But I haven't been back, so it's grown out again. I wonder if I should just take the plunge and cut it off completely. I'm sick of it always looking the same.

    So my questions are:

    - Did you regret cutting it off?

    - Is it expensive to maintain? (ie - how often do you need to go back to the hairdresser to get it cut/thinned out)

    - Do you need to style it or can you simply wash and wear?

    - Would you ever let it grow out again or is it the best thing you've ever done?

    TIA

I cut my hair to shoulder length from mid-back a few years ago.
I get it trimmed every 4-6 weeks to keep it under control, I have very thick hair so have to get it thinned out, too.
It's pretty much wash and wear for the first few days, then on the third day I have to put the straightener through the top, as it gets a bit ****y, itms.
I wash it every 4-5 days.

    Best thing i ever did.

My hair is thick grows fairly quickly, and I love having it cut into a really short funky style. I love popping some gel/mousse on my hands, running it through my hair and it looking fab.

My hairdresser has decided she likes long hair on me now and isn't cutting it short. I do usually give her a fairly free rein on my hair, but I did say short this time. Will have to insist when I go back in a few months' to see her again.

I cut mine off into a short bob. It was good as the hairdresser really listened to what I wanted (low maintenance) and worked with my hair properly. It suited me at the time (about a year ago) but I am now growing it back as I do love long hair.

Did you regret cutting it off? That is a resounding NO! I had hair like yours - super thick and it was wavy too which made it extra hard to manage. I used to have a mid-length layered style but I cut it all off for the first time 7 years ago, grew it out again and then went back to a super short pixie cut about 4 years ago and have kept it short. I did grow it out a little last year, but it was still short. I got jack of having to straighten it because it was just starting to go wavy again.

    - Is it expensive to maintain? (ie - how often do you need to go back to the hairdresser to get it cut/thinned out). My hair grows really quickly so if I want to maintain it at the really short length, I go for a trim every 3 weeks and it costs me $33. But lately I've been leaving it 5 weeks and by then it is really thick again.

    - Do you need to style it or can you simply wash and wear? I style it when I'm going out for the day, but otherwise I wet it with water and comb it and it's done! I wash my hair at night so it just needs a light spray with water in the morning.

    - Would you ever let it grow out again or is it the best thing you've ever done? Honestly it's the best thing I've ever done. I feel quite liberated having short hair actually. I like that I can make it look nice if I want to, or I can just let it be. So few women have hair this short and I think that makes me like it a little more too. I love that if I'm running a little late to get the kids on the school bus, I just give it a quick comb and it's done. Even when I go swimming or playing sport it makes it so much easier because you don't have hot, sweaty hair in your face.

I just cut my very long hair last week! and love it my hair was just above the top of my butt and is now just on the top of my shoulders! my hairdresser was having palpitations cutting it but she knows my hair grows really quickly so wasn't surprised I wanted to go the chop. I have wavy thick hair which I had thinned out and layered and it is sooo much easier to maintain. I only use product if I'm styling it straight to go out otherwise its wash and wear but still enough length that if I want to tie it back I can without having bits falling out.

I don't regret cutting at all and wish I'd done it sooner rather than waiting 2years!

best.move.ever I have had long hair for years and always always had it tied up because It anoyed me down so I have it cut into a concave bob and I LOVE it. I wash and wear and if Im going out I might blow dry it. I go back to the hair dressers every 6 weeks as I get my hair coloured now too

I thought about it for ages and ages in the end the hair dressers had a special on so I jumped at it and cant believe I put it off for so long

Heh, over the years I've had a whole range of different lengths, the longest is where it is currently which is just below my shoulders almost to mid-back length. Longer than that it just goes ratty and horrible.

I was 13 the first time I had it cut super short (pixie style) and it was awesome! So light and easy to take care of, I could funk it up a bit with some styling wax if I wanted but if I was short of time it was wash and wear and it dried so quickly compared to taking all day just about for my long hair to dry. I grew it out again later on but had it cut again the year after DD was born, then grew it back out and have had it chin length with messy layers for a while, which was also easy and fun. Maintenance wise, you'll need a trim at LEAST every 6-8 weeks, more if your hair grows quickly.

I still get tempted to get the chop again, usually around this time of year when my long thick hair starts driving me nuts by being hot and itchy on the back of my neck....but DH loves my hair and has threatened to grow a biker beard if I have it cut

Have to be quick- but having seen your hair IRL- I would say short would look lovely- BUT it would def need regular maintenance to be thinned out.... My sisters have gorgeous thick wavy/curly hair and so did I before I had DD- our hairdresser would thin it out to the max- then we would need it thinned in 6 weeks- you can stretch it to eight, by wearing it mostly in a ponytail

I regret it to some degree. In terms of maintenance I am slack & go for months without cutting or dyeing it until I am in dire straights! I wish it were a little longer b/c it gives you more options for formal events. eg: I want to be able to curl my hair more but it springs up too much, so I wear it straight alot

For about 10 years I had long, thick, only ever in a pony tail hair. Like you I thought about cutting for a few years and then, last year, I did it. Best thing ever! I had to go cold turkey on the pony tail, so I told the hairdresser to make sure it was short enough that it wouldn't go into a pony tail.

I use no product, I never blowdry it and I just wash and comb. I get it cut every 3 months or so, and my style grows out nicely (I think). I look heaps better with it short. DO IT!

5 years ago I got my long hair cut to just below my shoulders, I hated it and cried for days! My hair so thick and the layering in it when it was short made it boofy and hard to work with. When it's long the layers just make it look nice and the length weighs it down so that it flows nicely. My hair has been pretty blah since I had blonde foils in it 18 month ago and with hormones I've sworn I would cut it several time over the last 2 years but I keep the last experience in the back of my mind so haven't taken the plunge. I have thought about going just below my shoulders again but I know I'd have to straighten it after every wash to stop it feeling like a birds nest. But I LOVE long hair so I will keep it as is I think.

My hair was nearly elbow length when DS was born. It's now just touching my shoulders. As he got more alert and 'grabby' I decided to cut it. 6 months of wearing a braid was starting to bore me. I had long hair for 6 years prior to the cut.

    -I don't regret it
-I haven't had it cut again yet, 9 weeks on. It's grown out a bit but still looks nice.
-It's not wash and wear, my hair is also very dense and a bit wavy. I only straighten it quickly after it's washed, maybe twice a week. Its still long enough to tie up but short enough to wear out., too.
-I will continue to maintain my shorter style until DS is older. I do love long hair, so will probably grow it again eventually, when there's less likelihood of sticky fingers getting tangled in it, lol.

I have thick hair, in my 20s I had it waist length and got it cut off in a short bob. Then I went to very short/pixie cut. Upkeep was weekly cuts/thins, but I didn't have to use product if I didn't want to. I lived with my hairdresser so cutting was free, so was product.

I'm in the process of growing my hair again, it is just shoulder length, don't know how much longer I'll grow it, I'm usually on 5 weekly haircuts but right now I've not had a cut in over 2 months and it is showing, I need to get to the hairdresser in the next couple of weeks.

I've never regretted cutting it each time I have.

I've been thinking this the last few days too. I have insanely thick hair that is wavy. The only problem is when I do go shorter my hair goes curlier and looks horrible unless I straighten it every day, which is impossible to do with 5 kids.
I had super short hair in my early 20's and loved it so much. It was so fun and really easy to look after. Now though, my face is way to chubby to pull off that look

Hmmm, you're all making me want to cut it

I'm not talking a bob, or any length at all. I'm talking a fraction longer than Pink's hair. Not in such a boy cut style, but with a few longish bits at the back that will (hopefully) make it more feminine. I cut it to a bob earlier this year, just below my jawline and I'm wanting to go shorter.

    Now to be brave!
