To me it smells like *thinking* vanilla maybe... no, kinda fresher *going over to sniff DS's hair* it's really hard to pin-point... I'll ask my other June Buddies... a few use it there... but we all agree it smells delish
Ok I've got the bottle now (couldn't get it before because it was in the nursery ensuite and didn't want to risk waking baby). *having a good sniff* It's not a fragrance of something edible it smells like a shampoo... but it does have a vanilla undercurrent... on the ingredients list it says: tea tree, lavendar, rosemary which are there for tonic properties but would make it smell the way it does too... it's a complex smell but lovely when you smell it in hair
Jelvie, I agree with Bath, it has a bit of a vanilla smell. Chelsea thought it smelt like ice-cream, which I think it does! It smells very fresh and clean if that makes sense?
I've been alternating between Kerasilk and Keune shampoos and conditioners, both are from the salon. Each one lasts me 9-12 months. I have really long hair and wash every second day (sometimes everyday) because I play sport/exercise everyday and end up with sweaty greasy hair. If I can't be bothered washing my hair I'll tie it back in a ponytail.
Gidget - Hurray for the comment from DH... But does it feel or look any different to you? Don't expect results over night... Healthy hair comes with good maintenance. I didn't mention before - but your not blow drying your hair are you? The more heat and blood ciculation you draw to your scalp the more oil production there will also be, hence why people who are rather active will also experience increased oil production. Did you ever wonder why it was when you'd go out with girlfriends for a night of dancing to wake up the next morning with yucky hair? All that exercise and increased circulation! Head massages also increase circulation so if you've ever been lucky enough to get a scalp rub or massage from DH you may have noticed your hair seems oily the next day.
Jelvie - I was going to ask what hair products you used... but since you've already answered that question, how long have you been using PPS? Might be time for a change... people don't realise that their hair needs a change and they shouldn't be on the same product for years to come, instead it's great to change product whenever they run out. Each product does a different thing, and hair doesn't nessecarily need the same thing bottles and bottles later. With the itching - Do you get psorisis all over or just on the scalp? Is the tar based shampoo working for you? If it is, try using it every second wash and then every third wash just to see if that improves things for you so you can have a shot of leaving your hair unwashed a little longer - otherwise try the same method with selsun, making sure you keep it off the ends. Not trying to product sway, but i just thought i'd mention that i actually get dermatitis on my hands and palms whenever i use PPS or Delorendzo, even though i love Delorendzo... I use to get it from hairdressing with these products and even now i will break out with it from those products. Any other brand, not a sign of dermatitis! If the itching is getting a bit much, give yourself a little bit of a head massage - can soothe the itch for a short period of time. And as for the not feeling clean with unwashed hair, that is just psychological because you have washed your hair everyday for probably some time - you will feel Ok again about not washing everyday when you get your hair into a good washing routine and you might even find that your hair will feel much nicer!
I find that it's best to invest in some good quality professional style shampoo and conditioner. I use to use pantene and it ruined my hair. Now I use De Lorenzo from professional salons. It's more pricy, but my hair has thanked me for it! You don't need to use a lot. Be careful using a lot of conditioner. Some people need to feel their hair just smothered in conditioner to think it's working. But you only need about the size of a 10 cent piece, put it onto the roots first and then work it up through the rest. Also, wash the hair twice, the first wash only get the pores open..the second cleans them out.
Catherine - I am again on my day 3 of the not washing hair thing today (laying low and stying mainly around the house today!), so yes, it is a bit greasy. I was standing there in front of the bathroom mirror this morning, and guess what! There is actually a healthy shiny sheen coming from my hair - not usually there!! I think maybe all that natural oil is giving me some shine Does still feel kinda yucky! No I don't blowdry - it was years ago when my last hairdryer blew-up and well I never got around to replacing it! Exercise and head rubs too - I never knew that. I do like a good massage!! I suppose having oily hair because I like to keep active is a good thing - yeah?
Jelvie - well that was the same with me, i never reacted with those products until after a few years of use... It doesn't always happen to everyone, but some people with certain products/chemicals just react after a period of time. Maybe see if you can try a new shampoo and conditioner if your game... It may just be PPS isn't working for you... Make sure your brushing the oil through your hair too, it's good for the ends and takes some of it away from the roots. Poor you with Psoriasis - how has the itching been since not washing?
Gidget - You go girl, i hope things start to improve for you... As i said to Jelvie - just make sure you brush your hair to distribute those natural oils to the ends... just don't 'over do it' other wise again you over stimulate the scalp. Obvioulsy being active is a good thing, but you have to find a happy meduim... Find products that work for you and then find a good washing routine that does your hair justice... i mean washing every day or every second day is just too much... You can't expect your hair to love you when your not letting it enjoy those essential oils!
I tend to not wet my hair between washes...
It would be okay to do - but not with hot water (which will stimulate oil)... If you did use hot water... give your hair a quick blast with cold water before you get out.
It's fine to spray it with water... and leave in conditioner between washes - particularly if you're looking like an afro
Jelvie - No wetting in between... just dry! But spraying with water in fine, BUT - I don't recommend spray in conditioners... especially if you have an oily root issue. It's really hard to control where the mist is going and it's really important that you only keep it on the lengths/ends. Provided it's a quality leave in spray - so you don't waste... Spray into the palm of your hands first and then pop onto the lengths of the hair again avoiding the roots. If you've got some mad bed hair, a daily (which is lighter, but not nessecarily used everyday) moisturiser is great at smoothing it all out. I think you'll find the healthier your hair becomes the less bad hair days you'll have. Also i'm not sure what your length is like Jelvie, but if you can tie your hair in a basic pony tale or bun, that will also keep your hair smooth for the morning and will even protect your hair from splitting ends that pillow cases cause.
I CAN go three whole days without washing now, no probs - those glands are being whipped into shape.
I DID nearly fall off the wagon though on the weekend because a non-washing day fell on Sunday and DH and the kids wanted to go out! BUT I did, I braved the wide world with unwashed greasy hair. I think it must feel worse than it looks because we visited relies and no-one said "geez, gidget you need to wash your hair" as I thought they would.
Today is day 3 and it is the BEST is has ever been on day 3 and I am debating whether I can leave it to day 4 - ie wash tomorrow.
I still have flyaways but now that they are being weighed down with natural grease they are not quite so bad. I haven't put my hair up in ages so it is not broken. I think the flyaways I have are new hairgrowth after the postpartum hairloss and breastfeeding. I had that annoying wipsy fringe effect, without having cut a fringe, just new growth a few months ago.
Gidget, I've got fine, wavy hair and an oily scalp. Being an ex-hairdresser and having been fortunate enough to experience some of the best products on the market, I've seen some great ones and some lousy ones. My favourite of all time is the Kerastase range from L'Oreal, followed closely by Joico products.
As we're on a tight budget, I color my hair with a permanent supermarket color (Clairol Loving Care -Black) and swear by the Pantene Smooth and Sleek range, shampoo, conditioner and the leave in conditioner (of which I use a minimal amount). I have found Pantene brilliant for protecting my hair as I wash every day (due to having a rotten oily scalp) and blowdry and straighten almost every day as well as using hot rollers and tongs to create differnent looks. The silicone coating only serves to protect from the heated tools and also keeps my hair shiny (also being dark, light is reflected much better than on lighter colored hair giving the appearance of shinier, healthier hair).
Firstly, as your hair is fine, you don't want something that is going to weigh your hair down. So perhaps changing from the Smooth and Sleek range is the way to go and try a volumizing shampoo and conditioner as someone else has suggested or else a shampoo for an oily SCALP and conditioner to suit your HAIR type. If you can afford Kerastase...try it!!!
As I stated earlier, darker colors exude more shine as opposed to lighter colors. The reason some colors don't take is because of the prior condition of the hair - ie being too damaged and porous and the colors go in and out very quickly as the cuticle of the hair shaft is open. Good preparation prior to coloring is the way to go.
With regard to treatements, if your hair is very coarse...you will require a treatment that is 2 parts moisture to 1 part protein. If your hair is fine or normal virgin (untreated by chemicals), you want half moisture and half protein. If your hair is bleached, you require 2 parts protein and 1 part moisture. Be aware though, that if you use a treatment labelled as a protein treatment and leave it on longer than recommended by the manufacturer, it will cause damage.
When I'm finishinng off a style I generally get a shine product (usually in a spray) and spray it lightly onto my fingers, rub them together to heat the product and gently rake them through my hair so I get a light coating of the shine product so my hair isn't weighed down. The serums can be too heavy and I find the spray works a hell of a lot better for me and my flyaways are controlled. PS...I give my scalp a break for a few days from washing and throw my hair into a ponytail for a couple of days - and MUST add a ribbon to it!!
Phew....I think this must be my longest post.

I was think of you yesterday Gidget and wondered how you were getting on! I'm so proud of you!!! Congrats about feeling better about your hair and your hair starting to take on a new life I'm surprised you didn't weaken and just wash, because many people just get fed up and give up - keep up the good work
Thanks for your advice Mrsr - I have fine, virgin hair. I wish it was wavy like yours - but nope - straight and boring!!!! Never tried Kerastase or Joico but will look at something new when my current bottle is finished - might be a while though because of the new washing/non-washing routine.
Catherine - I came so so so so close on the weekend to weakening and just washing - but I didn't! I did weaken yesterday though and wash and didn't leave it to the fourth day BUT after just over a week - leaving it to 3 days is no problem!! I am so surprised!!! Just working up the courage to leave it to 4 days.
I am glad I read this thread. I have always left my hair unwashed for 3 days, and if I told anyone that i did that, they would look at me like I was dirty. I just used to do it cause I couldn't be stuffed to wash it every day and waiting for it to dry. I hate blowdrying my hair.
Gidget - your hair sounds similar to mine. I am also combating new hair growth at the moment so have bits going everywhere LOL
Hey - Jelvie - how did the hair cut go? Feeling better? Glad to hear you are only using the H&S every 2 days - can you make it to 3? Hope the stress subsidies too - it will help the scalp.
Kathryn - Do you have virgin hair too? Looking at your photo you are right - we have the same hair type - mine looks the same as yours when long - shorter now - and the new washing (or I should say non-washing) regime gives me more body of the roots because of the natural grease. It sounds gross but it is not.. my hair is so so so much healthier instead of washing all the natural oils away so often. I don't blowdry either.
I now have a new washing regime - every Sunday and every Wednesday. Thankfully I can now save a fortuneon shampoo which go can towards the interest rate rise today.
