Chew minty chewing gum for the times that you don't want to drink but feel obliged to... there is nothing worse than the taste of mint with any alcoholic drink (except if ti has mint in it)
Definitely drink water or lemonade etc in between drinks... start off with a non alcoholic drink when you first arrive... it almost sets your mood for a slower drinking session I've found.
I am always the last one standing when I drink like this... when I go out with my friends in Sydney, all these rules don't apply, and I am the one dancing on the tables and singing badly... though in my mind I am a singing goddess!!! lol
