Shoegal I usually call the maternal and child health service with any after-hours problems. In case you dont' have it, the number is 13 22 29. They have a call-back service so you don't have to hang on for ages.

Today was better thanks to all that have asked.
We have had our crying moments and I can handle them when there are breaks, but it continued non stop last night. We sang, we talked, we held, eventually we shooshed and rocked on my chest until we fell asleep. I know that it's like when I need ot just let it out and have grown to understand that. DH still can't deal with the crying for more than a minute at a time, so I seem to be constantly settling.
Find it amazing that DS does not seem to be frazzled by the crying like DH and I get.
Sarah I had similar with the constipation, but I know it is due to a lack of water intake.
Fire do you know if there is much difference between the first ed and later editions of Aware Baby - found both on ebay, but earlier ed is much cheaper.
Shoe- honey i feel for you. Maybe just wait til he cries for a feed then offer it, i am sure he will take it when he is hungry. i have had one or two occassions when MJ has gone 6-7hrs without bf.
grubi, I'm not sure, but in the second ed which I recently got from the library (still have here), it said there were studies and research done since the first ed. So maybe that's all. So I guess if you get the first ed, keep in mind that many of her theories have been backed up with evidence now - research that may not be in the first ed.
Shoe, that SUCKS. I hear you loud and clear on the breast refusal/scream cycle. I have guesstimated a few reasons for Ci's by close observation and some research. One reason is peristalsis (the waves of motion in the colon that push the poo around and out); when we eat, it triggers peristaltic waves, hence why some people poo after eating. In babies, it is still a very disconcerting sensation, not nec pain. With Ci, there may have been some pain involved, as he would refuse the boob and scream when offered as he made the synapse that feeding hurt his belly. Then he'd do a few whopper poos and feed again. The other problem I had was supply. First it was oversupply, so feeding was a pain for him cos he got drowned with my let down. He also got too much foremilk and distended his belly before he was satiated. So he'd try to keep eating (to get to the fatty hindmilk) and it would just get more and more uncomfortable for him until he was having this battle of wanting the boob but screaming when it was offered. Poor sod. He first had watery poos, then they turned green. (They are still green a little) So I corrected the imbalance and it's ok most of the time unless he wants to comfort suck, and then he's up S*** creek because of my strong letdown. So I end up having to comfort him in the rocking chair which is holding a screaming baby who would rather be sucking to sleep and is too tired to keep awake.![]()
Not sure if there is anything familiar in there for you, but take heart in knowing he will eat eventually, and maybe then you can watch closely for signs of what it might be. Watch his reaction when your breasts let down, too.
Last night was the worst night so far. DH brought him to my bed at 1.30am for his usual feed and he was wide awake. That hasn't happened before. So it started him crying and took two hours to get him to sleep again. I'm concerned that the separation from me stresses him, as DH has him from 7pm until his midnightish feed, only bringing him into me when he needs a feed so I can sleep between feeds. He seemed quite stressed last night when I handed him over to DH. This is a bummer of epic proportions as I really would be quite mucked without those few hours of sleep it gives me.
Janine- I'm with you on the bad night! Was is a freak full moon or something? Jack was so very unsettled from about 4 - 9pm. Only ended up finally getting him to sleep by bouncing on the fitball with him in his sling for 30 mins then transferring to the rocker for the remainder of his sleep (which was so hard on my back!). Then DH had him from 11- 2.30 and he slept really well but woke up screaming and would not settle until 4.30! I'm so exhausted and for the first time last night i really felt that i might be close to loosing it. Had to just hand him across to DH to regroup a few times and felt terrible about it.
Anyhow, hope that the rest of you had a good night at least!
Geez... just read all the posts I've missed in the past week or so..... I thought things were tough for us, but now I'm thinking Ryder & I arn't doing to badly at all! He feeds every 4hrs - some breast feeds & some expressed feeds and happily accepts either or. Burbs & gets his wind up after every feed & goes straight back to sleep - sometimes this takes a bit of jiggling & bum patting but!!! Doesn't really cry a lot (except to tell us when he's hungry). He has started having more awake time now too - doesn't go back to sleep for 4 hours after his morning feed (usually from about 6am-10am), then bath time, feed time & back to sleep for 4 hours! This is the time of day that I try to go out to the shops etc (while he's clean, full belly & fast asleep!).
You poor Mum's who are feeding every 2hrs & have unsettled bubsI take my hat off to you for coping!!!!
Oh, I use a dummy with Ryder too - I know some Mums are anti dummies... but seriously, it really buys me time! I find he is always looking for boob - but if I've just fed him, I know sure as hell he's NOT HUNGRY!
Had Ryder weighed the other day too - little munchkin has put on nearly 500g in 2 weeks!!!! He does loves his milk!![]()
Janine - any tips for babybiotics if you don't mind? Does the chemist stock them? Thanks for sharing what happens with Ci.
Nettie - thanks, I do have the ABA number, I've called it a couple of times about my supply issues.
mgm - is that a national helpline? I've never heard of it! Thanks for posting it, I'll add it to my list of numbers.
Nessa - thanks for the reassurance, good to know (IYKWIM) that it's happened to others and they have been okay.
Well, luckily I had some EBM from his first morning feed yesterday, then expressed some more at 7.00pm last night and he took 90mls quite happily then slept until midnight which then he fed from the boob, yay! I did a search on breast refusal on here and tried to relax and encourage him. Must have done the trick since he fed again at 4.30am, then 9.00am so very relieved now.
Just changed a dirty nappy and it's getting back to the mustard yellow colour. The pharmacist did say the AB's may give him diarrhea so perhaps it was that?
He's just had a feed and is nodding off to sleep so I think that is my cue to have a nap as well. DH has gone to footy, I would have gone too, but I have nothing to wear! Sounds ridiculous, I know. Going to Perth on Tuesday for our 6 week check ups and buying a pair of fat jeans to get me through until this baby belly disappears somewhat. Also joining Weight Watchers online once I get the all clear from my OB.

I had a good night last night - Liam was as settled as he's ever been!
I think I'll have to take over night feeds as DH isn't coping with being awake so often (3-4 hrly) so his patience is wearing thin... only trouble is expressing - don't want to be awake for 40 mins to feed DS, then another 15 to expressMaybe I'll do an express late in the evening, then again at the early morning one (6am ish) and skip the one or two feeds between. It doesn't seem to affect my supply much and I never get pain or engorgement...
I'm about to go & express now actually so we'll see how much I get (as I haven't expressed for about 5 hours).
Just read back over this and gee, don't I ramble???Sorry about that!
Anyone else's bub not had poos for a few days? I don't think Liam's pooed since Friday. He doesn't seem too uncomfortable and there's LOTS of wet nappies, just no poo. He's farting a lot though (and they smell like poo) so I know his bowel is still working! Any suggestions from anyone?
:hugs: to all who need them. Especially you Mums with BF issues or extra kids - I have NO idea how you do it. Blows my mind to think that I was 15 months old when my Mum gave birth to my little sister... and my Dad worked away a lot. How the heck did she cope???? I wish I knew!
