Can you fit the matress or cot in your room at all Jules? Sometimes it's easier for the transition to do in bed togetner, slide baby over to cot next to bed - put baby down in cot - move cot further away gradually, or something like that. Or baby on matress on floor of your room, you in your bed... i've said it before but don't worry about 'bad' habits (it's not bad for him to want his mummy during th enight or to settle better that way, and if you're all getting more sleep this way then it's better anyway). Anyways, give it some time and see how you go. Have you read the No Cry Sleep Solution? It has lots of ideas for this sort of thing.
