queenb - great to have you back on the thread hon Aaliyah sounds like she is doing really well! i never get email notifications for this thread either so I just keep popping in every now and again.

Well, Ochre is really enjoying solids. I started him on pumpkin which he wasn't too impressed with so I moved onto sweet potato and he doesn't mind that but he definitely has a sweet tooth (just like his mummy!) as he looooves pear!! Today I started him on pear in the morning and then sweet potato tonight with pear for dessert and he ate it all! His poos have changed as well....what's coming out is looking exactly like what's going in hehe....and just about every nappy has it in it!! I've introduced a bottle with water in it as I read breast babies need a little extra water when they start solids. He is not sure what to do with it but with a little perserverance I'm sure he'll get it

So far his nightly feeds haven't changed much - he's still doing 3.5 to 4 hourly blocks of sleep in the night. I had him weighed on his 5 month birthday and he has dropped down on the percentage scale. The move to start solids was the best thing for him as he really knows already what it's all about and tries to grab the spoon when it comes near him. His eyes light up when he sees it and his tongue pops out...he looks so cute He tried some watermelon and really enjoyed sucking on that. I think the coolness of it soothed his gums as well. He is strong enough now to sit for short periods in his walker and he is loving touching, sucking and playing with all the bits and bobs on it. I am going to hunt down the jolly jumper too....my other boys loved that! xx

queenb glad you found the thread again
littlelala- Aimee also dropped on the percentage scale at 5 months (so did Jasmine) so we have increased feeds and started solidsat 5 1/2 months. Aimee is still gaining about 100g a week so the gp wasn't too concerned. You are right about the nappies I forgot how bad they get. Aimee has had apple, pear and banana she loves them all and tries to grab the spoon and feed herself. I am giving purees as well as food she can feed herself like watermelon and banana. We are doing one meal a day at the moment but will increase to 2 in the next couple of weeks.

The girls were in the toy room together the other day and JAsmine kept showing Aimee a little toy phone, everytime she opened it Aimee cracked up laughing. It was so loveley seeing them interact/play like that. Im sure there will be arguements as they get older but it just melts my heart when they laugh and smile together

    Hi everyone!

Littlelalla & skyeblue (and anyone else on solids): we are looking to put Lachlan on solids at 5 months. We want to do the traditional mushy food rather than baby led solids. If it was up to DH Lachlan would be on three meals by now but iv managed to keep the spoon away from him. ha ha. How did you start introducing solids?? e.g what meal did you introduce it at, what did you first introduce (farex etc), when did you know how to increase or add new meals and did you introduce one new vegetable fruit at a time or did you just mix two or three together. So many questions. We are looking to start early mainly due to the fact that ds always seems sooo hungry but usually throws up huge amounts of his feed. Hopefully he will stop chucking but im not holding my breath.

Skyeblue how are you going with the dummy?? Iv been toying with the idea of getting rid of the dummy. we always said that we would get rid of the dummy at 6 months but now im not sure. it really helps lachlan settle when he goes to bed and he spits it out when he is asleep and doesn't usually need it to be reinserted but im scared that he will get too dependant. although he has discovered his thumb but hasn't quite worked out how to suck it to settle yet. just pokes himself in the eyes with his other fingers and that upsets him more

No signs of teeth here yet thank goodness. not looking forward to that. although lachlan has had a red sore bum which he never had before and i heard that can be a sign of teething but nothing yet. Prob not far off though.

Well ill be all alone next week as DH is going away for the week. He is in the air force and usually does alot of trips but things have been quiet and i think they finally got the message that he doesn't want to do trips anymore so this is my first trip since lachlan was born. He was away for most of my lst trimester which was interesting and just managed to get home for lachlans birth as the bugger decided to show up early. Usually he is away for a min of two weeks though so this is nice and short. He is going overseas though and will be flying most of the week so will be hard to keep in contact which sucks. Im sort of looking forward to the challenge of doing it on my own but at the same time im getting scared. I find it really hard to bath lachlan because of my back so not sure how i will bath him next week so he might be a bit stinky by the tie dh gets home! Hopefully this will be the last trip though as dh starts a new position in juky with no shift work and minimal if any trips and that is for three years so woopy! Then again having him around all the time might be annoying!!

Other than that things have been going well. Lachlan is sleeping alot better during the day, usually 1.5 to 2 hours which is great Dont ask me for the secret though as he just decided all of a sudden one day that he wanted to sleep more and did. Although when we are out its a problem as he doesn't sleep for long in the pram but i think thats my fault as he has had a shade on his window all summer as the room gets really hot and that makes it pretty dark in there so now he likes to sleep in semi darkness. I think iv made a rod for my own back but now im scared to take the shade up as he was up at 730 this morning rather than his usual 830 as he normally does when the shade is down. woops.

I was also going to ask, Lachlan has developed a bit of a hatered for the car seat. He tries to sit up and pull forward in the rear facing seat and of course he cant because of the seat belts which annoys him and he cries. Im not going to turn the car seat around till six months even though he meets the weight criteria so any ideas on what to do in the mean time? He has a mirror which he looks but he isn't interested in that at the moment, he just wants to sit up. I have to drive over an hour with him next week on my own so i really dont want him screaming the whole way, any ideas??

    Hope you are all well!

    Hi Ladies and Bubs,

It has been ages since i have been on here, i also wasnt receiving the emails and then one came through today, so here i am.

It sounds like everyone and bubs are doing really well. It is so amazing that our bubs are getting close or at / past the 5 month mark. Lily will be 5 months in a little over a week. She has been on solids now for about 3 to 4 weeks and loves it. She is having it 3 times a day and she has the boob 4 times a day. I decided to start her on it as she was more interested in what we were eating than the boob. She now grabs out glass when we are drinking and tries to drink out of it. She actually nearly has it down pat. She wont touch a bottle anymore which made it hard to give her some water, so i now have to give her a sipper cup. It scares me how fast she is growing up. She is now sleeping 11 hours straight at night she goes down at 8pm and then is up at 7am. She has always been a fantastic sleeper, but i am now wanting to try and get her to do 7pm to 7am, hopefully we are not far off it. How is everyone going with the sleeping???

Hope you are all feeling well.

    xx

I also bought her a jolly jumper and she loves it.

Isabel- i have quite a few really good baby food books ( my fave being Annabel Karmel's Top 100 Baby Purees) and most of them say it's good to introduce a new food every week as that way you can determine if bubs has any reaction to it. You don't really have to stick to it though - I introduced 3 new foods in about 3 days...no problems here Farex or baby rice cereal is a good first food and if you mix it with your own breast milk the milky taste makes for an easy transition to solids. I skipped the farex as my other two boys weren't interested in it but soon I will use something like that to mix in with the pear puree to give it more. Other great first foods are root vegetables like carrots, sweet potato, parsnip and swede. Apple and pear are good first fruit purees and banana and papaya don't require cooking so they can be easily mashed. It is recommended to give their first meal in the morning so you have the day to see if they react to it or not. Berry and citrus fruits and seafood shouldn't be given til after 6 months and honey should not be given before they are one. As to how much, I am giving Ochre roughly 2 icecube sized blocks for each meal and he is handling that really well. Every baby is different though so just go with what bubs wants. Ochre is not a good car traveller either and my only way around it is to put all the boys in the back seat so I have one to pop his dummy in when he needs it.

Anthea - Lily sounds like a dream baby! What kind of sippy cup do you use? I thought about going straight to something like that with O as he's never used a bottle. I think I will do that if the bottle idea doesn't work.

Sara- oh that's so cute My older boys have worked out how to make Ochre giggle! Just have to watch and make sure they don't go overboard The drop in percentage worried me a little as he had only put on 200grams in a month!!! I didn't see how I could increase feeds either as he is already feeding 3 - 3.5 hourly in 24 hours!! And I really didn't want to introduce formula so solids was the way to go. When Aimee eats banana and watermelon how do u give it? Little pieces?

    xx

Anthea- lily sounds like she is doing well, they are growing up so fast. Aimee hasn't had water yet but I might start her on a sippy cup soon as she keeps grabbing Jasmine's
isabel - good luck when DH is on his trip, have you tried washing lachlan in the laundry sink? it might be better on your back. Im sure a sponge bath with a wet flannel and a bowl of warm water would be fine for a week and save your back
littlelala- with banana sometimes I mash it but if we are doing BLS I cut it in half lengthwise and in half cross ways (does that make sense) so she has 1/4 of a banana, watermelon I cut into a potato chip shape so about 2cmx 6cm roughly. It needs to be fairly long or it just gets smooshed in her fist. She doesn't get a lot in when she feeds herself but she seems to enjoy it.

    What's up ladies!

Well we're starting Aaliyah on solids this weekend! I can't wait. I would have started her earlier but hubby wants to me home and give her the first spoon Will start on the Farex.....she's eating everything these days or should I say chewing! not only that when she sees the boob she attacks it now like she's starving so it's time for her to eat!

Isabel B - we have the same problem here with the dummy! I wanted to get rid of it @ 6 months but she settles so much better and then spits it out later on. I'm not sure what to do either? Also Aaliyah likes to sit up in the car seat also. Our babies sound similar hehe.....so you're not alone!

I cant beleive how quick time flies. We're going to pierce hey ears on her 5 Months, do chemists still do it these days? Also with the car seat, when do you change it so they are facing forward? I can't remember.....hahaha

anyways I hope all is well xx

    Hi All

Well DH didn't go away yesterday, plane was broken (makes me sooo confident) and they ended up going today. I was feeling pretty good about being alone with Lachlan but now im not sure. He has been so unsettled the last couple days. I really dont know what has gotten into him. Poor little mite just cries and cries and i feel on the verge of a nervous breakdown and DH has only been gone two hours!!

I think he may be unwell as DH and i have had shocking colds in the last week and it would be a miracle if he didn't catch it. He doesn't have a snuffy nose or anything but is very unsettled but when you pick him up he wiggles to try and get out of your arms. I have given him some panadol and put him back to bed but he wakes up every 5 minutes or so and winges a bit. I just dont know what else to do. I also need to rock him to sleep at every sleep now which is very strange for him as normally i just wrap him and pop him in bed and he goes to sleep within a few minutes with his dummy. I hate it when he is like this. It is heartbreaking. The only thing that keeps him semi happy is watching kids tv which i know is bad but i just dont know what else to do.

On a happier note he rolled for the first time from back to front on the weekend but on an annoying note he now wont stop rolling onto his tummy and when he gets there he realises that he doesn't want to be there and screams till you roll him back over We also missed the first roll as i was in another room and dh was in the kitchen cooking and wasn't watching him at the time (the house is open plan so he wan't in a room all on him own) He has been rolling from front to back for awhile now but for some reason he has stopped in the last month or so. Very strange and very annoying.

Queenb our car seat can be turned around at 8kg i think which lachlan is over but im worried about his head control a bit so i am putting up with it till he is 6 months old. Not really that far away as he will be 5 months next week on mothers day. I think alot of hairdressers do ear piercing.

Oh we also tried lachlan on some solids on the weekend, just some of that heinz organic rice cereal and it all ended up on his chin, not much actually ended up in his belly which was quite funny. He enjoyed it but i think that had more to do with the attention he was getting. Might try again at 5 months as he is obviously not ready yet. How did Aaliyah go with her first solids Queenb? I also let DH have the first spoon as i figure we get all of the other first, may as well give him one of the firsts that we can actually control!

    Hi All

Finally back online after the move!

We started Maya on solids this week - I think she likes it as she is eating more each sitting now. I have tried farex plain, farex with banana, farex with avo, apple sauce and pear sauce. I used jars but I want to make my own (I wasn't sure if she was ready for solids yet). I have her eating solids twice a day but she still has a bottle after it as she gets frustrated. So thats 5-6 bottles a day plus the 2 solid feeds. Should I stop her having the bottle after the solid feeds?

I haven't let her feed herself yet but once I start cooking my own food I will cut some up for her. What sort of food should I give her?

Maya is sleeping through the night and is going to bed earlier now. A few times we have let her cry herself to sleep. She crys for about an hour or more then goes off. She also has really red cheeks so I guess she might be teething as well?

I need to buy a front-facing car seat - any suggestions?

Sorry for lack of personals but there is no way to catch up now! Hope everyone is going super

    Mel

    Hi everyone

Going ok here...Mia is still waking for a feed once a night, at around 3.30 or 4am...seems like alot of you have bubs who sleep through! No fair lol.

She has really grizzly days, I think she might be bored?? I cant get much done, and my gosh, at about 5pm- 7 she is really hard work! Witching hour I suppose!
Solids are going well, she eats so much and loves every food except for farex. She loves pears, sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot, ANYTHING really! I give her rusks sometimes too which she enjoys..

But other than that, she is great, rolling around and being very cute Loving it.

Sorry I have no time for personals either, I need to get a few things done while I can!

    Hope everyone is well xx

Hey everyone! Finally got connected AGAIN! so over internet disruptions!!

Well Aaliyah has been on solids for a week now!!! Very excited and she's loving it!

For those who are starting and wondering what routine or when to feed milk to bubs I follow the routine from the book 'Save Our Sleep' It's been the only guide I can find because no sites mention anything about how to give solids. What I've been doing has been working just great!

Aaliyah wakes at 8 and I breastfeed. I wait half an hour and then feed her farex and pear for breakfast. Put her for down for her morning sleep, I try and give her at least 2 hours but it's always broken. When she wakes I feed her again, wait another half an hour and give her carrot (or any vegetable) then she sleeps again. Her 3:00 feed is just a breastfeed. She sleeps for 45 mins and at 5:30 I give her Farex. Then bath and bed by 7:00. I find the breastfeeds are shorter because she is filled up with solids! FINALLY! However every day she wakes up differently, sometimes 7:30 or even 8:30 but the day starts from there. I've been making my own food up and putting them into ice-cube trays. Then once its all done I just place them in bags and label the veggies and fruit. I suggest giving them fruit because it doesn't constipate babies, Aaliyah has been going regularly since we've started solids. It's been a blessing. She still wakes once through the night but I'm not fussed coz I'm getting my 8 hour sleep!

Veggies to start with are carrots, zucchini, sweet potatoe, pototoe well that's all I can think of at the moment because I've had a long day! Pears and apples are also good and they will love it. I also give Aaliyah one savoury and one sweet just to keep her interesterd in solids and she loves it!!!

Apart from that she's a happy baby and hopefully she can start rolling soon, she's already falling to one side now i'm just waiting for her to go on her tummy it's so cute!!

How is everyone else going with solids and there bubs in general?

Queenb sounds like your solids are going well. Ours are too. Mia eats so much. I usually give her a really big bowl of food and think "Ill give her half, save the rest for later", and she scoffs the lot! lol.

We also have many more poos being on solids!

    Yucky!

Hi girls hope everyone had a great mothers day! I got to lay in bed reading until 10.30, I could get used to that! We are doing well, Aimee is rolling from tummy to belly and back now, she rolls to get to things she want's we have to check over the baby proofing again. Aimee's teeth have been bothering her this week but whe still hasn't cut one. We cant believe our little girl is six months old now. I have been a bit slack with the BLS as feeding her myself is quicker and cleaner, although she insists on holding the spoon too. Somedays she eats like a trooper and wants more, other times it seems more fun to blow raspberries while trying to eat, very messy but funny. Im happy to have made it to 6 months breastfeeding this time

    Hi All
Hope you are all well and your bubs are doing well too! Hope you don't mind if I join in the thread

Our little boy Xander was born 8th December and is our first baby. He is a little champion and is growing like a weed! He's rolling from his front to back and all over the place and I think he cut his first tooth today!

He's on the save our sleep routine and does so well on it. We started him on solids at 4 months and he just can't get enough! He has three meals of solids a day, usually farex with pear and bananas in the morning, fruit for lunch and vegetables for dinner.

A question for the breasfeeding mums, since Xander has started solids its really difficult to keep his attention for the feeds, he kicks up a fuss three or four times at least and seems to empty each side within 10 minutes and some days its a real struggle to get him to last that long, and I"m worried that he's not getting enough fluids and thinking that perhaps I should put him onto formula. The only feed he doesn't do this is at his dreamfeed at 10.30 each night I think because he's asleep.

Hi bec welcome to the group

My DD is 6 months (she was 4 weeks early but I post in this group as my DD was around the smae time as a lot of the other girls). Aimee has been a pain to feed or the last 6 weeks as she is just too nosy, every time she hears something she pulls of and has to have a look, then back she goes for some more. I think it is quite common for them to get distracted at this age, and they get more efficent at feeding as they get older so feeds often get shorter. Sometimes I go in a quiet room if I don't want to deal with the on/off routine. If he is gaining weight well and still having plenty of wet nappies I wouldn't worry too much.

Today Aimee has learnt to blow raspberries and she and Jasmine have been blowing them to each other all arvo, it so cute. I also put Aimee in the walker the other day, she cant move it yet but loves the change of scenery, I just have to make sure Jas doesn't try an push her and tip it up lol. Aimee is still having two small meals a day, I am going to have her weighed again wed and once again its time for needles ahh!

Hi Bec! It isnt just BF bubs that do that, Mia is bottle fed and she also gets distracted and wants to look at everything, she always mucks around with her day bottles. Her night bottles are ok, she is too tired to play. We are on a very rough save our sleep routine, she is a catnapper, so the sleep times dont really work for us during the day, but I follow the bottle every 4 hours thing, and in bed by 7pm, and up at 7, or if earlier, no earlier than 7 for her morning feed.

Sleeping hasnt been so good, she is waking up 1, 2 or even 3 times a night, I only feed her once though. Please come through teeth!

Sara- aww so cute with the blowing raspberries! Mia hasnt worked that out yet....I was looking at walkers too, I really want to get Mia one. Oh yes, Mis is having her needles on Sat DH coming with me though so that is ok.

Hope everyone is well, very, VERY quiet in here! I think we all keep ion contact via FB now, lol.

    Hi guys!

Sararose: Lachlan has been blowing raspberries for awhile now. So cute and lovely that they are interacting like that with us now.

    Bec: Welcome to our group.

If you guys are on facebook add me as a friend. My email is isabel_lipka@yahoo.com.au I feel a bit left out missing out on this facebook action!

Things coming along here. Lachlan has started solids slowly. Not a huge fan yet so im not pushing the point. He will get there when he is ready. We have had some really unsettled days which i think may have been due to teeth. Poor bub has a bit of a cold at the moment and is a bit snotty which isn't fun. Seems to be in pretty good spirits during the day though so only really affecting us at night at the moment.

Are any other bubs trying to crawl and getting really frustrated on their bellies?? Lachlan is rolling constantly onto his belly then making semi crawling motions and not really getting anywhere. He gets so frustrated!

    Hope your all doing well.
