Hey - quick post to answer Peanutters question

I haven't had it happen with Emme, but I did with Jett - around the 4 week mark. It turns out he was overfeeding. I had an oversupply and a fast let down and Jett would feed both sides fully. If I expressed it was about 240 mls - which is huge for a nb tummy. So the result was two things that caused him discomfort - one was silent reflux - telltale sign was stinky acid breath like he'd just chucked. The other thing which was explained to me was that the sphincter that holds the food in the tummy for processing and digesting before releasing it in to the gut, would open up with the pressure of the full tummy. So this meant that undigested food would be going in to the gut and then fermenting causing wind pain. The foremilk in breastmilk is particularly responsible for this as it is basically sugar water.

So what we did to ease it was I would feed from one side only, but more often. I would also express off a little of my milk so that I wouldn't be so full so the letdown wouldn't be so strong and some of the foremilk would be removed. Problems from this were my supply was eventually compromised, so I had a bit of a rollercoaster ride with how much milk I had for about 6 months. We also offered Mylanta. We only needed to do that for a few weeks until it all settled down.

But of course this is only my experience, and it may not be related for you guys. It may be the above, it may be just silent reflux, it may even be something in your diet (eg. broccoli) that may be causing gut wind pain. But I thought I might offer my experience in case it does resonate with you. If it does please go and see a doctor, a paed, a LC for some proper advice. They may have changed treatments or have other suggestions for you. I remember it well, and I remember how bad it got. I was in tears on a number of occasions because he wouldn't stop screaming and I had no idea what was going on.

This time, being aware of what happened last time, and also knowing how strong a feeder Emme is, I stuck to one side only initially, and made sure she was comfortable when I put her back down to sleep (i.e. no wind). The times when I did feed her two sides I would watch for any overflow chucks as a sign of 'too much' so wouldn't offer the second side again for another couple of days. She now has a little bit from the second side, my supply seems to be stable and not too much. We also give her a dummy so that she isn't comfort sucking or snacking.

Good luck - I hope you figure out what it is!
