Well - for me - the risk of what the "disease" is compared to the risk of the immunisation is less than say, whooping cough. I immunised her for that one, because there is an outbreak of it in tassie at the moment, DS goes to daycare, so the probability of her catching it is higher than the risk of side effects of the immunisation.
However - DS has had rota virus when he was younger. He had the craps for about 3 days, but we survived it, and he was fine. I kept him well hydrated with fluids, and icy poles, kept pumping them into him, so he wouldn't end up in hospital from dehydration - which is the main thing that they say is the concern of babies catching the rota virus. Plus - the immunisation is still quite new - he got rota virus because there wasn't an immunisation for it yet, so who knows what kinds of long term side effects can crop up from it? For me, the risk of the unknown was far greater than a heap of poo. I'm hoping that since DS has had it, and apparently you can only get it once, that he won't bring it home if there is an outbreak at his daycare. However, if he does, then we'll deal with the consequences.
I also wouldn't have gotten the hep b immunisation but since they chuck them all in with the whooping cough one, I had no choice. When Eden was about 2 weeks old, we went to the mall and saw the manager of a men's store there - his grandson was 2 weeks old as well and had just been admitted into the hospital with whooping cough. They didn't know if he was going to live or die. I didn't want that to happen to Eden, especially if I knew there was an outbreak in the area. So, we are choosing which immunisations to give her - in terms of the risk and likelihood of catching it - if that makes sense?

Bizarre child.
