My first loss (my little boy Darren) was in NSW- i was induced at 18 weeks-the sonographer who explained his kidney problems was fabulous - the OB i saw was kind and gentle- when i got to hospital the nurses were wonderful- the midwife with me was a lovely elderly lady who was very supportive and stayed with me the whole labour. There wasnt alot of after care support- but all in all i cant complain..
2nd loss- i was advised to go to QLD for my u/s for a "better qualified look" all was good till my 35 week scan- a Prof. with more letters behind his name than the alphabet did my ultra sound and picked up a perenial bleed on the edge of my placenta that was loosly clotted- and an obstruction in my daughters bowel which at the time he assumed was part of the clot dislodged which she then swallowed. On his "expert" advice i was sent home and told "we will hope that holds" and come back next week..... no print out of the report- no advice to rest or given any idea of any symptoms that may be an indication of anything going wrong.
I stayed the night at my sisters house in Ipswich and the next day on the way home to NSW i didnt feel "quite right" so DH and i pulled into the Gold Coast Hospital to get checked out. I was sent straight to the mat ward and a lovely midwife listened to what we had discovered at the scan and the story of our previous loss and i said i was in a small amount of pain, but that i was assuming i was just stressing myself out- she said understandably so- hooked me right up to a ctg machine and went for a dr who arrived within minutes with a portable u/s machine.. My daughter was in fetal distress and my placenta was abrupting- this was less than 24 hours since my u/s. I was stripped and prepped for an emergency c section within minutes i was in theatre.. sadly despite all of their hard work and quick response my little girl was born sleeping- they attempted to revive her- but it was too late
I stayed in hospital for quite a few days due to the c section- and the midwives were all amazing- i spent a little time with my daughter Zahra and every midwife who saw me would tell me how precious and beautiful she was. One very special midwife spent one evening with me dressing her and taking photos and we got a snippet of Zahras hair for me to keep- i hold that night deep in my heart and i am forever grateful that she took the time to be there with me and hold me when i cried.
DH and i were given counsiling and follow up calls and they made everything that little bit easier to deal with.
All in all.. QLD u/s guy GGGGRRRRRRR.... Gold Coast Hospital- Thumbs up!
