Talking The couch to 5 km! Want to join me?

I recently came across this great-sounding interval-training plan where you slowly build up to being able to run 5 km non-stop!!

I'm keen to start this soon - was wanting some BB buddies for support!

If you're keen, just google "couch to 5km" and you should be able to find it.

EG Week 1 Workout 1 - 5 min warm-up, then alternate 60 sec jog with 90 sec walk for 20 mins total.

It's a nine week, 3 x a week plan - but I think I'll be stretching it out if I'm not ready for each increase in jogging!!

Well it looks like no-one is keen to start this yet!
But I am going to start on Wed so this is going to be a mini-journal thread for me - and hopefully other BB girls will join up!!

Info on the program is here

Here's to a happier and healthier new year!!

Well it looks different - what have I got to lose? I'll join in on Wed as well.

Week1 - Workout1 = Brisk five-minute warmup walk. Then alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes.

Can't believe I'm getting excited about the thought of starting exercise lol

I'm going to give it a try too
DH has agreed to look after Natty tomorrow morning so I can start then... I'm going to have to play it by ear (it will depend on DH's sleeping habits ) so I'm going to take the opportunity while its there. I hope its ok for me to start a day early, LOL.

I'm up for it. Before Shelby I used to run 6kms twice a day, but I dont even think I could make it to the letterbox now.
I will be doing it on the treadmill though, far too many big hills where I live.

One question - where on that info link does it tell you what you need to do each week? I couldn't find it. ETA nevermind I found it.

Hi all. I started this morning - boy, that 60 secs of running feels twice as long as the 90 secs of walking LOL!!! I feel really good for having stuck it out though. All the best for tomorrow, girls. I'm not sure if I'll be joining you tomorrow or not - going to talk to DH tonight and see if I can swing some babysitting

Great to see so many gals are joining in!
I'm going to start it today, once it cools down... not looking forward to it but it's always the first time that's the hardest!

Also should mention that on that page I put the link up for, is a link to a guy's webpage who has made up a whole series of podcasts (both for Ipod and in MP3 format) that you can download for FREE - and he has music for each week including telling you when to walk and when to run etc. So I think it will definitely be useful!! I've downloaded them and listened to a little and the music sounds pretty good! Will let you know how Week 1 Day 1 goes!!

OK MrsP - am currently downloading the Podcasts as I type, and putting the program into my calendar!

Just wondering if my P&T's sport pram is OK for the start of the training.

    :

Hi Kazbah - I've got no pram experience ha ha but I'm sure if it's a sports-style pram that the manufacturers say you can jog with - then it should be ok! It will probably give you more of a workout actually!

Gee, I'm going to have to get myself one of these ipod/mp3 things (I'm obviously still living in the 90's). I'm planning on my first workout tonight around 8pm when it's a lot cooler. I'm sick at the moment with a head cold/sore throat but I'm not going to give in to excuses (as I'm very good at finding them).

Hey Belinda - just wanted to mention that I use my mobile phone as an MP3 player! I bought a memory card for it (2 gb) and use the headphones/handsfree thingy that came with the phone.
So maybe have a look if your mobile can store and play music??

have just done my first workout. Man I'm puffed - and so's the dog! Note to self: don't start the workout until the dog has done her busy. Lucky she only did it during the warmup!

We live in the Dandenongs, and I just did the workout from Belgrave to Upwey along the trainline. Downhill to Upwey ... and uphill to Belgrave! 2.3km and 1700-odd steps.

The last one though is strange - he says "you're doing well" at the end of the running sets, and he said that with "only 20 more seconds" by which time I'd already slowed down.

    I feel good though!

Argh- stumbled at the first hurdle!! As I had been inside all day and hadn't left the house - I didn't realise it was so hot! At 6.30pm it was still 36 degrees here! So I realised that to do the workout tonight would result in certain failure, that would only make me feel worse about myself.
So instead I'm all set to do it in the morning, when it will be cooler, as tomorrow is going to be 40 degrees!!! Will post afterwards to confirm that I did it

Congrats Kazbah on the first step! yay!!
