Alcohol consumption along with the use of metformin can cause Lactic Acidosis which is a build up of lactate in the blood stream. Our liver converts the lactate into glucose and releases it back into our bloodstream, but when our body produces too much lactate our liver can't cope so it ends up staying in our blood stream which can cause complications. Worst case scenario is that it starts to have a negative effect on our organs and even organ failure. I have done a bit of research online, and have found conflicting evidence. Some studies say there is no proof yet others outline an increased risk with the use of metformin, especially with excessive alcohol consumption. It does say in the packaging (well the one's I have had) that it is recommended not go over 1 standard alcoholic beverage per day. But I do know of people who have gone ahead and drank as they normally would with no effects. I personally don't want to take that risk, so if I know a social event is coming up I generally skip that days meds and start again the following day. Better to be safe than sorry. And as my Dr has said, there is no point in not livingAnd skipping a day here and there (so long as its not on a regular basis) shouldn't really affect the metformin. However I have noticed that when I do skip a day I do tend to get quite sluggish the next day or even a few days later (but that could be just me). But my best advice would be talk to your Dr about it as I am sure he/she can outline it more
