    Couvade Syndrome
Yes that's right, couvade syndrome. Last time he was mildly nauseous, this time he is wanting to go to bed at 9:30 along with me cos he feels exhausted. Bless his heart.

Oh the nausea has kicked in now. Oh the joys! Just want to go curl up somewhere and ignore my children.

HotI - hope this slump is just a short-lived thing and soon you're feeling like yourself again!
Eenee - how are things going?
Arimeh - what's new at your house? Has the flu passed by now?
Bella - how are you and your pregnant hubby? I hope the nausea isn't too severe for you! I think that was the toughest part of my pregnancy this time - I felt TERRIBLE in the first few weeks.

    How's everyone else doing?

Caleb and I are still doing well - just a quick question from me for all of you:
Do you give your midwife a thank you gift? Got any good suggestions? Here's the scenario: I had four midwives involved in my care, so I'm not quite sure what to do. One (Christine) was assigned to be my primary care midwife at the beginning of my pregnancy, and did all my early prenatal appointments, but then was switched to be my second when the midwife (Debbie) who delivered DD5 returned from leave (she had broken a wrist, or something...?). Debbie does a job-share with another midwife named Lindsay, so they together were my primary care midwives. I saw them each a couple of times in the later half of my pregnancy. Then, as a back-up, clients are assigned a third midwife, whom they see once. (Joanne. She was also there at DD5's birth.) So I saw all of these ladies through my pregnancy, and then at the delivery, Debbie and Lindsay were both off, and Christine and Joanne attended. My post natal visits have all been with Debbie again.
The gift-giving budget is not THAT big, so I can't get anything too huge here. Do you think I should get a little something for each of them (gift certificate to book store...? Bath and Body shop? other...?) or something for the practice? (books or DVDs for the lending library? Feel free to suggest titles - I can check what's on the shelf when I see them this week. I was thinking about a copy of Hello Baby, but I could probably get a couple others as well.)
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    ta

i bought a midwifery book for my student, and a shoulder bag that had a birth type image and saying on the side for my midwife.

I know Rhea Dhempsey has a new book, and they probably won't have that on their shelves. I haven't read it yet, but i do like her readings and talking.

I've had to change my appt because my m/w was at a birth, but only once. I generally understand, one day that's probably going to be me (although I have the consideration to give birth when they really don't have many other clients!).

I've never seen another m/w instead of mine though. We just work around each other.

Yeah, i had to change a few appts when things came up for my midwife, completely understand that happens. I just would be upset at seeing another midwife 3 appts in a row.

Has anyone else noticed a shift from midwives doing majority (or all) home visits to more midwives having an office and only doing home visits towards the end of pregnancy? My midwife doesn't, but i am hearing about it more and more.

I could use some helpful tips/info on giving birth vaginally with a breech baby. We still have time but I am getting everything prepared in case this baby is breech like her sister. Washington is a no-go when it come to vaginal breech births but Oregon is okay with it. I found a lovely midwife center that said if this baby was breech they think (if everything was great) they would feel comfortable delivering my baby at my aunts house in Portland (has to be in IN Oregon). My aunt is all for this but the rest of my family is not supportive. They think I am being crazy and don't understand why I would go through this hassle (its 1 1/2 hours away) instead of just having a RCS. My mom thinks giving birth to a breech baby vaginally is a death sentence and even asked me if I would go to jail if the baby died This is my last baby and I just want to fight for the birth I want! This midwives in Portland are WELL known and have done TONS of breech deliveries. I am starting to doubt myself now that death has been brought into it. Im still holding out that this baby is head down so we can have our home birth

Well, you can look at Spinning Babies for tips on helping your baby get/stay head down, and you can see a chiropractor to help your baby move as well. The only thing I found about Spinning Babies was that I started to get a little TOO stressed about having my baby in the optimal position, and imagining all sorts of horrors if he wasn't. This baby was delivered ROA (instead of the "optimal" LOA) and it went perfectly. Then, I'd suggest you talk to your midwives about it. Maybe ask for an extra-long appointment so you can have a thorough discussion, and bring a good list of questions.
Finally, DON'T LISTEN TO YOUR FAMILY! They haven't done the reading and the research. They've watched ER one too many times, where everything is dramatic and life or death. Learn as much as you can, and make sure you have caregivers you trust taking care of you and baby. Then you know that you will be able to make good decisions together when the time comes.

Don't know if you've read this blog, but I found it really interesting regarding breech births.

The first time it happened, I think it was that they'd only just been called away - I can't remember. Second time, they called me and gave me the option to either reschedule or see the other midwife. I took the second option because I wanted to see someone. This time I'm not seeing anyone else, as I said they're making it up to me with a home visit

I really do think it's just bad luck. As far as I can tell they're not overbooking, I just happen to make appointments on days they're going to be at births. I shouldn't have said anything, it's like I'm complaining but I just thought it was amusing.

Yep HotI this describes my MW, I think though its due to the increasing popularity of having a private midwife. I did hear her mention once that some people prefer to be seen in there office as it seems more professional-and that's generally for the women that still want to birth in hospital. I did much prefer home visits myself as it makes it feel more special, that and I didn't have to pack the kids up. It also allows her to see more women as she doesn't have to factor in the travel time.

My midwife makes a new appt if she's at a labour, I've had all my appts with her. But yes she doesn't tend to do home visits at all. But she is doing them for me now, seeing as I was having pain sitting in car too long with bad pelvis and bh.

I only had one MW appointment at her home, rather than mine. I agreed to it as she was on a license suspension due to speeding too often I have noticed that here in the states the trend is absolutely to do office visits. All the post-natal visits are office visits too. Ugh. Travelling with your newborn post birth?? That's the perk of homebirth for me! I've found a few MWs advertise that they do "european style care" which translates to appointments in your home rather than office visits.

My MW was frequently late (up to 2 hours late) but always with a phone call and me saying it was fine. It was just because her day would vary so much depending upon another family's needs but she never missed an appointment. Unfortunately for me, my son's birth was one of about 4 in 3 days or something crazy as I went a week over and a few mum's went early and my MW dropped off the radar. It really sucked balls and I was disappointed with my post-natal care as that's the most critical time for support for me.

The_Mrs- I think traveling that far for great breech support could be really worth it. So awesome to have women which a high level of experience available to you- it's becoming very rare! I wouldn't think about the fact that it's a VBAC breech. The VBAC bit is pretty irrelevant. And I agree- don't worry what the uneducated 'scare of birth' people have to say.

My midwives do all in-office visits, with one home visit at 37 weeks or so. Then, they visit you at home after the birth as often as you need until 2 weeks pp. After that, they'll see you when you need it at the office again until 6 weeks.

And I was at the midwife's office today for a post-natal appointment (happy due date to Caleb!) and the little piglet is up from his birth weight of 6lb 12oz to 8lb 2oz! Not bad for just over 2 weeks old.
