Hi Kylie,
The first thing to do would be to decide what sort of birth you want, and where you would like to have the baby. If you want a hospital birth, you'll want to book in as soon as possible to get your choice of hospital - some of the private ones fill up their lists pretty quickly. If you're going private, only an OB can book you in, so you'll need a doctors reference to get an appt with the OB.

Visit your GP and have a chat about your local options. One thing that concerned me about my booking was that I booked in when I was six weeks pregnant, but didn't get a confirmation til 12 weeks - I since found out that this is standard, the hospitals will take bookings as early as you like, but not do confirmations until you are 3 months pregnant.

If you decide on a home birth you'll need a midwife, your local MCHN will be able to provide you with a list of people who operate locally and might even be able to suggest one who specialises, if you have a prerence for waterbirth or something a little less common.

Most of all, don't stress! Enjoy being pregnant as much as you can, because there will be good days and not-so-good days. Take care of yourself - don't let yourself get run down and start taking a pregnancy multivitamin, if you aren't already. Iron deficiency can make you feel absolutely dreadful, and folate is necessary for your baby's development.

Good luck!

Kerrie
