Going to the gym early pregnancy

So is it safe?? I'm about 6 weeks and don't want to tell anyone yet but I have gym partners and would like to keep going. Do I just tone down my routine or is it safe early on to maintain my normal routine???

    Hey mummzy!!
    Congrats on the pregnancy
I kept on going to the gym as normal when I got pg and everything is perfectly fine! Im still going 4-5 times a week! You can keep doing everything that you have been doing. I'm not sure what you do at the gym but if you do weights, you can drop the weight a bit but do sets with higher repetions. This way your heart rate is going up and you are working out more cardio like. Running, cycling, cross trainer all fine too. I only stopped my running about 4 wks ago but some ppl ran run all the way through.

The main thing is to just listen to your body as you might not have the same energy and strength as you did before pregnancy, I know that I don't!! If you need any more help, I'm here to answer questions I workout out with a personal trainer too and hes been amazing help.

Awesome Yes well I was trying to loose weight So i've been doing Cardio and weights but really wasn't sure what was what I also do a few classes but I'm guessing the yoga/pilates style one will be perfectly fine. I just dont want to tell people yet although I can tell this one is looking on the up compared to the others :-)

A quiet word with the class instructor before the class starts to let them know you are pregnant would help too. I kept going to the gym for quite a while, was doing pump classes up until after 7 months.

I too was going to the gym when i fell pregnant with DS1. My GP said if i'm carrying on doing things that i was prior to pregnancy that is fine. Obviously you'd do things within reason and i was always told to not alllow my heart rate to get too high.

Enjoy and all the best for a happy and healthy pregnancy

Hey love what classes are you doing? Yoga and Pilates are def good but please tell the instructor...she should know, esp with Pilates as there are a lot of core based moves with that.

Generally if you have been to the doc and they say ok then you can do everything you have done previously. The most common rules are not over heating, keeping your breathing regualr (if you can maintain a conversation you should be fine) and keep a snack handy in case you feel dizzy.

But please tell your instructor as there are contraindications for all classes. If you want specifics then let me know

I have continued fitness class and am now well into my 2nd trimester & think there's no reason why you should stop your classes.
I do think it's important that your trainer/instructor knows that you are pregnant tho, they need to know not to push you too hard or encourange you to do exercises that are beyond you.
    Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Just quickly, while your at the gym just try not to overheat, when I was pg I kept going to the gym but was told to go easy as varying body temp too much could hurt bub. Hope all goes well for you!

If you can get yourself off the couch, then certainly you should go. My doctor just told me not to get my heart rate over 120 beats per minute, so your body temperature will not get too high as bub does not like being overheated, and I see everybody else got the same advise. Exercise is actually very good for the baby, when your heart rate goes up, bub's heart rate goes up too and his/her heart gets stronger. I excercised all the way through my first pregnancy and my daughter is strong like a bull :-)

I am 7 weeks today. I have worked out regularly pretty much my whole life. I run and strength train
5 days a week. However, for the past 2 weeks morning sickness has taken over and I am sick
to my stomach all day long. I haven't been to the gym once in the last 2 weeks bec I am on the verge
of puking morning, noon and night. I have tried nausea teas, wrist bands and gum.
They take the egde off but I still don't feel like I can get to the gym and move my body.
Any suggestions? I'm going crazy not being able to work out. Doc says I'm healthy and can keep
going. How can I tone down the nausea to get in a work out?

I exercised with a personal trainer up to 36 weeks. The information I was given was.
    1. You can keep exercising at your current rate and fitness level. But don't push yourself and try and do more than before. Now is not the time to try and increase your fitnss our train for a marathon etc.
    2. Monitor your heartrate, keep it below 180
    3. Monitor your body temp, it's not good to overheat, in can damage a developing fetus. This also means no hot baths or saunas.
    4. After 1st trimester cut out the abdominal exercises
    5. After 1st trimester, don't do exercises or stretches that require you to lie flat on your back for extended periods
    5. Be careful with weights, don't try and go for any PBs in this time. The hormones in your body designed to soften everything downstairs for labour also effect your other tissues so you are more prone to sprain injuries. I found I had to stop using free weights and use the weight machines for more control

    Hope this helps!

PS: include a lot of pelvic floor exercises in your workout!

To add to what BBB said...if you're doing Pump you don't have to stop the chest and tricep tracks just incline the bench...one riser under one side and three on the other

    Hi,
I am 36 weeks and still go to gym, walk 5 klm a day and bike ride! if you feel like you can keep doing then do it!!
My Ob has been happy to let me keep going - I do Pump, RPM ( or bike Spin Class whatever other gyms call it) and stretch class - which i have fuond really good!!!!
I actually do another chest track or leg track when the girls are all doing the abs in my pump class - I just take the step out of one end of my bench so it is on an incline

good on you if you can keep going - I got to about the 20 week mark and the fatigue hit me big time, b

Can I reiterate how important it is to tell your instructor that you're pregnant. I would hate to have a participant keel over and not know why. I keep an eye on all my pregnant ladies and most instructors will be very discreet if you're not telling anyone yet

Yea I agree that is the first thing I did! Tell the instructor, she also then gave me a few tips on what to do if it is too high impact!!
