Haven't read through all the SC threads, but I just love my slow cooker, especially in winter, although I am too much of a worrier to let it go while I'm at work during the week, so generally I only use it on weekends!

I do have a nice recipe for chicken drumsticks/wings, the taste can be a little strong though, so maybe not so good for little kids.
Lovely served with rice and some of the sauce/juice poured over as it soaks into the rice. Great if you dont like eating chicken off the bone (like me!), as the meat just falls off once it is cooked.

    "Touch of the Orient Chicken"

    6 chicken drumsticks
    1/2 cup soy sauce
    1/4 cup brown sugar
3 cloves garlic (i just use diced/minced garlic from a jar, about 3 tsp)
410g can diced or crushed tomatoes

Remove excess fat from chicken and place in bottom of slow cooker. In a bowl combine soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic and tomatoes, stirring well. Pour over chicken and cook on low for 6-8 hours or until tender.

we've been on a cooking binge today - well, this arvo really - needed some food to put in the freezer ready for DH to take to work - so rather than trying one thing at a time, we've grabbed three of those satchets for the slow cooker - mild chicken curry, herb and garlic lamb, and beef and red wine casserole. got home at half four from the shops, and now have all three on cooking (cheated and borrowed a couple of extra slow cookers!) - house smells divine!!!

Was wondering if anyone has made soup in a slow cooker before? Was thinking about trying it next weekend, might be a little more energy efficient rather than using the stove? Just have to find a nice soup recipe now!

i made up about 10L of soup at the weekend in the slow cooker! all came out delish too

one was a vegie soup - chucked everything that i could find in, added some stock (you can use water, but we'd just made fresh chicken stock) - and let it cook over night on friday night on low. got us yesterday morning, whacked it through the food processor, and have delicious soup! it's got a pumpkin base (so it's orange vegie soup!) - carrot, cauli, broccoli, potato, carrot, turnip, swede, celery, a little garlic (forgot onion, but it adds nice flavour) - and just let it go over night. made similar last weekend, and just let it cook during the day though...

friday we also made chicken and corn soup. fresh chicken stock (you can buy it, but we wanted the chicken chunks), chucked it in the slow cooker with some corn, carrot and celery. when it was starting to chug along nicely (the carrot was almost done) - we threw in some pasta to make it a thicker soup - cooked it another hour or so on low

the justslowcooking website has lots of soup recipes. ours were made from scratch, but you can use the recipes available there. just be careful of times listed - for some reason, even on low, our cooker only takes half to two thirds the time listed - if you're confident of how well your cooker matches up with listed recipes, it's fine - just something to take note of though...

Hi Gracie. I'm a slacker too so I got some McCormick slow cooker flavour bases from the supermarket. They are made especially for slow cookers. there is a mild chicken curry one. there is a lamb one too but you could leave the lamb out and just add more vegies I haven't actually used it yet but it looks delicious on the packet!!! Used my sc yesterday, for the first time since I last posted in here (which, looking back, turns out to be 2008.... ). Thought I had better do a good thing, and get dinner happening for the family, since I would be at work. I defrosted and diced five or six chicken thighs, a few carrots, and two chopped onions. I added some chicken stock powder, two heaped spoons of smoked paprika, a tin of condensed tomato soup, and some water (maybe a tin or tin and a half worth). On high for six hours. Got a text from the Man saying it was delish, so I felt very happy. However, when I got home, he told me that he had added all these other veges and other sauce to it. so I don't know if what I made was good or not! Upon questioning, he seemed relatively satisfied with how it was all cooked. ???? huh? Further questioning, he said what I had done was cooked well. PHEW! Looks like my sc and I are still friends. lol. Tempted as I am to replace it.... I do rather like those ones that you can use the pan on the stove first though.... Anyone got one of those?

My mum has one of those Netix.

Tonight we had pumpkin and bean casserole. Half a butternut pumpkin, one leek, a cup of soaked beans, can of tomatoes and 3 cups of vegie stock. 8 hours on high, and away we go! Served on pepper polenta. Yums.

Okay, this might be a bot of a silly question, but I'm asking it anyway! What happens when you leave your slow cooker home alone and the power goes out? It happens relatively often where we live, but not for very long usually. With a mechanical switch sc, I don't see this as being a problem. But what happens with the newer ones which have all the buttons and whatnot? Thanks.

I would be wary of leaving it to be honest. Even though they are designed to be left unsupervised we got ours when living in an area that did this and I just couldn't bring myself to leave it for more than a couple of hours just in case.... We also tend to do massive cook ups which mean slow cooker is very full so we tend to have to stir it occasionally to make sure everything is under the fluid level and doesn't dry out....

I leave my slow cooker on while at work all the time, never had an issue with it, but we very rarely have black outs, so I can't answer the original question sorry.
