hello ladies. a quicky from me - i'll update better later.
Saw the MCHN today. i think she got the idea i use a nipple sheld becuase Darren cant/wont attach with out it (possbale nipple aversion..) and she didnt mention ANYTHING about fromular. but i have to express and top him up on 30mls of EBM after a feed but she FINALY got that he was on the boob 100% for 48hrs when we saw her tuesday! he put on 15g. Ohh and shes now telling me to WAKE darren up...after drilling it into me he need to sleep.
hope every one is going well!
Its taken me ages to find the group on the website as I thought we hadn't started in here yet!
My name is Moose and I am the mum to Samantha (Sammy) born on the 9th of Feb and she was 3130g. Things have been fairly good so far, had some issues with breastfeeding at first but attended a couple drop in BF clinics and got that sorted...apart from her falling asleep at the boob but I can deal withn that. I strip her down to her nappy and burp her a couple times through.
The last weigh in done on Tuesday, Sammy had put on 190gr in 5 days, so she is well and truly on her way to fattening up. We had some issues with settling as well and she still has her days but she seemed to have fallen into a routine where she is awake after the 8:30am-9:30am feed until 11am or midday, then we feed again and she sleeps well for the rest of the day til the 12am-2am time where she does the same thing, she just doesn't like being in her cot, but is not crying the whole time, she has what I call quiet time in our arms. What I found works wonder is to lay her on my chest (skin to skin), her ear close to my heart and I pat her bum and she usually fall asleep.
Glad to see everyone is doing pretty good with the motherhood thing. Just don't give up and get as much help as you can. I cannot say how good the BF clinics were, built my confidence as the EC nurse had managed to crush whatever little bit I had gained when she told me Sammy was not feeding well and told me that she had only gained 80g (when in fact she had gained 160! She used the birth weight not the discharge weight silly woman) As mentioned before, Sam put on 190 5 days after that, so she is feeding JUST fine!
Gotta run and get a couple things done before Miss Sammy wakes up.
Looking forward to hear from everyone's motherhood adventures as it's a wild ride but boy is it fun! I love her SOO much
Melanie Kate: With bub getting enough milk query, providing you are getting 6-8 heacy wet nappies per day and your bub settles fairly well, there is enough milk. But Laura is right, chat to your midwife. They sometimes can get overly sleepy if they are not getting enought milk but if you are getting the heavy wet nappies, you should be ok. Let us know how you go.
Sterla: Sammy was like Oliver with the sleep until the midwife put us on a regiment of 3 to 3.5 hours feeding times (when she thought she needed to fatten up) and since then, we;ve lost the nice 5-6 hours sleep but it will all even itself out soon enough. She is sleeping about 4 hours on the longer sleeps. Babies are nocturnal and they feed better at night. Just remember to sleep when they sleep if you need it. Everything else ( like housework) can wait and the pattern (routine) will come soon enough.
Blip: So Darren sounds like a darling that needs lots of attention. Just hang in there, trust your mummy instincts and don't be scared to ask for help. I'm sure he'll perk up in no time!
Did anyone watch the Bringing up Babies on ABC last night?
It basically spoke about 3 methods of raising babies, 50's style ( very regimented- all focussed on routine) the 60's (which is kinda what is recommended today) and the 70's which is based on a tribal, more primitive way of raising babies, always keeping them on you, co-sleeping, sling, etc. I would strongly recommend a watch, its on again for the next 2 thursday nights at 8:30pm
OK, REALLY must run now!I can't believe its 3pm and I have not showered yet! LOL
I'm Angie and I just had my third baby boy, Marley on the 5th of Feb, it was an unassisted homebirth.
He was my biggest bub, 9lb 4oz.
He is a complete booaholic already, he is a very chilled out bub so far, fingers crossed he stays that way, my last baby had colic for 6 months, I'm terrified of a repeat of that!
I haven't had him weighed since birth yet, but I can tell by looking at him be is stacking on the weight, I'll take him next week sometime, I need to get him checked for clicky hips, it runs in the family a little... I'm just not looking foward to listening to the usual nonsense which comes out of most CHN's mouths... hopefully this one may be a little cluey...
Looking foward to getting to know you all
Sydneymoose - I haven't been watching that programme, I'm very much into the continuum concept type of parenting, I don't think I could cope with watching that harsh style, it sounds like child abuse to me, would break my heart...

moose: YaY im glad sammy is putting on some waight! darren does need alot of attention! but im happy to give it to him! i watched that bringing up baby last night too - i very much love the contuinum methord - i semi co-sleep as it is..but i cant do 'mum still alseep feeds' unless i stick the sheald onto my boob!
Cyathea- Hello! congrats on your thrid - watch out you may be bombarded with questions from us 'newbie' mums! hah
AFM: i have a little more time. DH is currently enteratining Darren! i've made up my mind about my MCHN. she's full of it telling me tuesday he needs sleep. telling me today to wake him. then today also telling me that 'hes hydrated now...but he may not be on monday' (when i go back) stupid women she is. i've found that yes darren feeds for an hour/hour and twenty. but he sleeps for 2 and a half three hours (if he's lucky and not got too much wind) so i'm up when he is and sleep (most of the time) when he sleeps! i talked to my mother on the phone about it...and she told me that 'you need to show him that your boss, they can get you under their control you know' ... at three weeks old? can i snap her nose? but i better go (again) darren sounds rather hungry!
any one else finding that their bubs done supscribe to the whole "40mins feed, 45 mins up sleep fpr 3-4 hrs?" or is just darren playing hard ball??
my little man, Harris, was born on February 13th, at 11.36am. He weighed in at 8lb, 52cm long.
So far we aren't having any problems with feeding or milk supply. He is definitely putting on weight like a little champion.
As for sleep, he has been co-sleeping with us. I think it is working to give us all a bit better sleep and improved sanity. At night he wake every three to four hours - sometimes longer but
I don't mind.
I have noticed that he seems to be havng more awake time now - in the da he probably stays awake for 40min to an hour after a feed. Sometime i wonder what I should do with him when he is awake. I feel neglectful if I just leave him to it in the rocker.
I find I get a little bored at home all the time - haven't really figured out what i can do about it though.
Will try and keep up with all you girls and how you are going.
Hi ladies, ive been looking for this thread and only just found it yah!I know some of you from our belly buddies thread! My baby girl summer was born on the 5th of feb at 8pm weighing 5lb5 and 45 cms.The first 2 weeks were quite good but shes fallen into a bad pattern of crying when shes tired like she will cry and cry but refuse to fall asleep where as before she used to just sleep after a feed, now if shes been awake for a bit she will just cry, only way to get her off seems to be in our arms at the moment when she has these times, other than that things are good,i had a few concerns about breast feeding as i was worried she wasnt getting enough and was hungry and thats why she was crying but it seems to be weve worked out what the problem is so thats good.
Andjxx-Hi,I might have to try the co sleeping thing,we arent getting much sleep at night at all,she wakes up every 3 hours sometimes less.I feel as you do,i feel a bit bored being home and sometimes even lonely, maybe its just hormones but its a big difference i guess from work.
Blip-I hear you!Im so over not knowing who to listen too!Ive been told the same, wake her for feeds,no shes tired let her sleep bla bla,i think i have to work it out for myself,i give up otherwise!!Yes mine is doing the feeds for 40mins then awake but lately its then cry time then sleep but 3 hours if we lucky.I cant sleep really during the day.
Melaniekate-ive had those concerns too and everyone i spoke too(except 2 ladies i know old school who told me to stick her on formula)said to stick with it and your breasts will make enough milk,my sister told me sometimes you have lower milk in the day so bubs cluster feeds but later on during night etc builds up again,im not sure if any is right or true but i know how you feel, ive actually had formula and a bottle ready to go for the last 3 days worried she isnt getting enough off me,i just havent done it yet.Mines also wont suckle properly at times and like thrashes around and pulls herself off then looks for it again, its like shes fighting it but wants it,then i think is she not getting enough or is it the opposite and its coming too fast or is it something else??Sure wish they could tell us!Hang in there with me!The other night she took soooo long to settle i was just in tears all night.its gotta get better!
well i finally got her to sleep and am thinking should i try sleep also or finish brekky or clean up or get out of my nighty???sigh!Sorry girls its been a bad 2 nights,we'll get there!
Lachlan just won't settle anymore! He was always crying and nothing could settle him... not even mummy's milk! So he is on formula but I am also expressing as much as I can which isn't much!
