happy birthday Naomi - hope you have a fantastic day hun!
Vic - it's completely normal for a feeding frenzy about now (apparently!) - the LC i was dealing with at the hospital called me when E was just short of three weeks and i said she was feeding heaps - she said it is normal for a huge feeding frenzy around three weeks, and again around 5-6 weeks (so it might get worse yet). apparently it's the baby increasing your milk supply for a growth spurt. E has upped her feeding now as well - was sitting with DH waiting for an appointment yesterday - and in 2.5 hours (ish) she fed three times - we then went to shops, changed her nappy and she fed again - drove about 50 k's and she was wanting to feed again. i worked it out on the way home - she fed 7times in 8hours! they weren't huge feeds like her night time feed - just regular "i'm gonna make your ears hurt if you don't feed me!" feeds... i think week five or six is also a wonder week - heaps of developmental milestones and growth spurt, so it makes sense. just wish it wasn't so uncomfy on the boobs! E fusses heaps - on and off for the whole time - not sure why though unless it stimulates things more (or she's really not that hungry and is just feeding to boost supply... not sure)
hope the infection clears up soon for you
hi to everyone else - have been a little quiet lately - just very tired and very busy as DH is home. he's leaving again tonight so i'm sure i'll be back in a couple of days! had a bit of a win on the horses the other day (trifecta with horse names that related to E - what a fluke!) so tomorrow i'm dragging mum to the shops to buy the rest of the non perishable foods for the baptism. hopefully i can do it on a budget still, seeing somehow DH managed to kill both his beloved coffee machine (which i replaced yesterday) AND the food processor (which we only found out last night - i'm devastated!) in the past week. that man is hopeless! think i'm frustrated cos he killed the food processor grinding coffee beans - so it's all related! turd of a man!
Hi everyone! How are we all?
Not too bad here. Same old really, except I have found that Allira DOES have a cranky streak. It's between 7pm and 10pm most nights. LOL She's really got those lungs working of late. Thank the heavens for the vibrating bouncer!
We have her 8 week check up tomorrow, and also DS' 2 year old check up aswell!!! He'll be 2 in 3 weeks!!!! I can't believe it! I am looking forward to seeing how much weight Allira has put on though.
Vic - you poor thing you don't sound too well at all! I hope the AntiB's can clear it up! It would be horrible if you had to endure appendicitis right now. Big hugs!
Amy - Lachie is starting to get to the stage of not listening to us. He's still not too bad, but he is starting to do the opposite of what we ask. Ah the joys of toddlerhood. And I've got much much more of this behaviour to expect! Luckily, he doesn't harass Allira in the portacot at all, and hasn't thrown anything in there as of yet. I'm sure it will happen soon. He has been chucking some good wobblies of late though, and now that he understands a fair bit of what's going on we've finally implemented time out. It works sometimes and other times it's a big fat failure. I hope you can get past this phase of Natty's very quickly.
BG - Nice work on the win! Good luck with all the baptism organisation! Men and kitchen appliances hey!! haha
Something sweet that DS has done lately, is when Allira gets cranky in the car, he will reach over and hold her hand. AWW it makes my heart melt. He is going to be so protective of her when they both get a little older. I think they will be best of friends. Allira is so taken by Lachie whenever he is nearby and just the sight of him can make her stop crying. Now I just have to teach the little man how to replace Allira's dummy. He's so cheeky, sometimes he tries to, and other times, he will take the ummy out of Allira's mouth and run off with it, giggling.
Hi to JwithJ, Bridg, Krystie, Bella and those who I have missed! I hope you are all going really well (I'm sure you all are )
Oooo and don't I look hot now!
Lachie sounds cute with the hand holding Niadla! it's sweet how sometimes they can do the smallest thing that is just perfect!
not a lot happening here - contemplating putting E in bed for the night - will mean an earlier morning wake up, but also some us time for DH and I. he is leaving probably in an hour or two, and i'm not coping. he's a huge help with E (like cuddling her when she decides not to sleep during the day!) and i will miss having him around to cuddle up to when she finally crashes for the night. sigh...
ooh, and i can't complain about him wrecking the appliances - i think it's just cos they get used so much. my man is such a fan of cooking - i love it!
Aww that's no good about DH leaving. I hate when mine leaves for work each day but at least I get ot see him every night. I would put E to bed to get some quality time if it were me. You can always bring her into your bed later on
BG: IKWYM about how much easier it is with the man around. I'm sorry that yours is gone for such long stretches. I feel like a tremendous weight is off my shoulders when he's home these days. And every other time there's a heaviness - not stress or sadness so much, just a bit of pressure I guess. How brilliant that Mr BG is a cook. DH won't make anything except cereal and scrambled eggs, LOL!
Nicky: Woohoo, you are a hottie! I agree with BG, VERY cute about Lochie holding her hand in the car. Natty just tells Phoebe to "stop it" when she cries in the car, LOL! But Phoebe is often calmed by the sound of Natty's voice - even the whinging!
I'm actually thinking of taking Natty to the drs today - I think there's something more to the behaviour. Maybe an ear infection. We'll see.
Good luck with the doctors visit Amy. It could be something more, you never know.
Sheesh, I can't beleive 8 weeks ago today I was in labour! I still don't feel like I was even pregnant with Allira at all. She had an awesmoe night last night, which means I am a very happy mummy today. Here's hoping she has a really good weight gain at her appt this morning, because I worry she's not feeding enough (although she gets chubbier every week, so I'm sure she's getting enough). She only has 5-6 feeds a day, but she seems happy and content and has a wet nappy every single change (and one or 2 giant poo explosions a day). Even second time around I second guess myself and my parenting ability.
Anyway, just waiting for another 30 mins to wake her up, so I can give her a top up feed before the appt. I've got Lachie to do aswell, and her wanting a feed right in the middle would probably not be very helpful seeming as I will be on my own.
Hi all. I'm really sorry to come in here just to offload but I need to express this and those I've said something to IRL have just brushed me off.
I'm worried about Ivy. She won't look at me. She looks at everything else and reacts to lights, shapes and movements... gives the lamp beside my bed a big gummy grin every morning and loves staring at the geometric shapes beside her change table. But her eye contact with me is so fleeting and when I try and get more, she really turns her head away like she is trying to avoid it. I've been really patient as I know developmentally she is at least 5 weeks behind, but it's getting to the point now where it's starting to make me fret. I know that my work (with kids with autism) is bound to make me ultra-sensitive / paranoid about this stuff but I don't think it's just that. She actively avoids looking into my eyes - do other babies do that?? I know she's just a tiny baby and that all could turn around in the next few weeks. Most of the time I just figure it's just a bit of developmental delay that can be explained by the premmie-factor. But when is my little girl going to look at me and smile??? Is she ok? She seems happy enough. A little more passive and sleepy than I might expect but most of the time that's great and I guess I really shouldn't complain.
I don't expect answers... I just need to vent. I'm just scared - I know how these things can go. Chances are, she's 100% 'normal' and the social stuff will come in time. But until then, I'm happy, in-love, but anxious.
Big hugs to you and your beautiful bubbas and sorry again for the selfish rant. Just needed to put it somewhere.
Kat - I think if this is worrying you the best thing to do is to get Ivy checked out by a paedeatrician, to put your own worries at ease, and it would probably be comforting to speak to a health care professional about it - its also about you feeling ok with the situation as well as Ivy's well being. Having said that I dont know if anything is wrong with her developement, and I think your thoughts on delays due to early birth are probably spot on - Bailey smiles at all kinds off odd things - the wall, ceiling, car seat hehehehe, so they certainly are un-fussy about what they smile at or look at. Is it at certain times that she looks away? Perhaps tired/fussy times? I can understand your worry - Bailey is definately behind with some of his motor skills but then when I remember he was almost a month early I rationalise that he will take more time, especially given that his first few weeks were a write off - with him being in the special care nursery and then re-admission to hospital so I really do understand. Ivy would have all these same stumbling blocks and more - so its probably just a matter of time....
Don't let others dismiss your worries (as they dont go away), I think mothers intuition is amazing so trust your instincts and get her checked out - when your paed gives your the OK and reassures you she is 100% normal (which I am sure she is) it will give you such peace of mind. Do you have a supportive/understanding paed perhaps from when Ivy was born?
HUGS mate - let us know how you go
xxxx

: spelling
i think naomi may be right kat coz j is only just looking at me properly and so i would get it checked if your worried but it would probably better if u held off just a little longer if u feel u can :hugs:
afu last night wasnt the best but i suppose thats wat happens with a baby lol hes taken to sleeping on his tummy and has a hissy if he cant but last night he pushed himself up the cot and smacked his head on side not very hard but he still did it and woke himself up it didnt even upset him he was smiling when i went in to see wat happened any ideas to try and stop it?????
Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone! I was truly spoilt. DH bought me a loveheart locket bracelet and put three charms on it - a pair of dice to represent how lucky we are to have found each other, a musical symbol (for him) and a teddy bear (for Bailey) - so sweet!! My Mum brought me a breadmaker, and I have already successfully made my first loaf (and we have almost eaten the whole thing LOL). We were having a sleep in which was lovely, then a friend decided that sending me a 7am Bday text was a good idea (nice, but a more reasonable hour thanks LOL), then at 7:05 workmen turned up across the street and started work on the timber frame of the house thats being built so generators and saws were roaring away - off all the days - never mind!!
Jacinta - When I give Bailey 'Tummy Time' he is still is really struggling to lift his head, he can turn it from side to side - which much grunting and frustration and is starting to realise that he can use his hands to help him but I think it will be a while before he can lift his head - I cant wait though. When I hold him upright he can hold his head up for about 3-5 seconds before it flops so its certainly getting stronger. Re Jamie smacking himself in the head - there are little sleeping position wedges you can buy - from Baby shops or Toys R Us - various different ones, but perhaps one of those might help you position Jamie in a particular spot in his cot so he stays put?
Vic - bummer to feeling sick, are you any better today? Fingers crossed its not appendix! I had a chuckle at your comment about CJ eating when she is bored, I do the same (hence the newly baked bread being almost gone).
Amy - Great re the smiles - I reckon the best thing in the world is when your baby smiles at you! Re cleaning the whole house - its the first time since Bailey was born that I actually got it all done on the same day - mind you I started about 8am and finished about 9pm HAHAHA. It is nice to have it all done though, rather than the bathroom clean one day, kitchen a few days later etc etc. Sorry to hear Natty's having a difficult stage - sounds like you have more patience than you think. Is it worth getting a play cage (LOL I dont know what they are called) but the little play fence thingo that you can put around Phoebe and out of Natty's clutches? I hope that makes sense LMAO. Hope Natty is OK and doesn't have an ear infection.
BG - DOH re the appliances! Re E fussing on the boob - Bailey has reached the point where he is sometimes REALLY hard to attached, he gets distracted easily and if its a night feed and he is waking he is stretching and fussing galore which makes it frustrating for him and I. Once attached its all good, but a few times he has been screaming for a feed but wont attach which makes him scream more - I am getting better at just shoving the nipple and and holding him tight until he realises that he actually has what he wants and starts sucking away LOL. I agree with Amy - isn't is SO MUCH easier when DH is around.
Niadla - re the vibrating bouncer - OMIGOD how good are they? I didnt have one until we visited our friend on the weekend and popped Bailey in theirs (their son has outgrown it) and he LOVED it, anyway they kindly sent me home with it to borrow until he's too big for it - he just loves it - I only use the vibrating bit when he is a bit unsettled and it really calms him (not sure if its a bit controversial to vibrate your child into happiness LOL) but it also allows him to sit more comfortably upright than the swing I bought him, and he loves the musical toys (its a fisher price band one, so he has a band just like Dad LOL). He has another plain bouncer that the MIL bought but he hates it and cries his head off after a minute in it - its uncomfortable and puts him in an awkward sitting position and only has a three point harness so he can easily fall out. I keep it in the lounge room so the MIL thinks we use it hahahahaha. I'll have to hide the other when she comes over. Lachies hand holding is beautiful, that melts my heart - what a good boy x
AFU - Bailey has dropped a night feed - so exciting!!! The last three nights I have fed him at 9 or 10ish, and he's slept through to 3-330ish so am getting a 5.5 - 6hr block so will be going to bed straight after that last feed from now on. The first two nights I woke up before him as my boobs were just about bursting but last night awoke to him fussing for a feed.
I just went to put him in his cot for a sleep before (which was unsuccessful although he is now sound asleep in his bouncer), but anyway as I put him in his cot I dropped his dummy and it landed on his face and woke him up - so annoyed with myself after spending time settling him hehehehe)
Better go and tackle my washing basket full of folding - how much washing do these little people create?
Hugs too all our lovely Mummies
Naomi

Kat - Does Ivy look into other peoples eyes? CJ doesn't really look into mine but does other peoples - I figured she just doesn't find me that interesting, maybe because she is with me all the time. I was following this baby massage DVD with her the other day and it was on about you and your baby staring into each others eyes but CJ wasn't having a bar of it, she would look at my mum or even look at the DVD on the TV upside down but wouldn't look at me, even when we adjusted her head she just moved to look at something else. My mum was saying certain feeding positions are good for eye contact but CJ doesn't look up at me whatever, she is intent on one thing boob and while she has her eyes open while feeding (only a short time as she shuts them in concentration pretty quick) boob is what she likes to look at. Like the others have said if it is worrying you is always better to get things checked out and put your mind at rest.
Nicky & Amy - The interaction between your old babies and new babies sounds so cute. I want CJ to have a sibling eventually but it will be a while I think.
BG - did you opt for the early morning wake up? I am finding that I can do the one wake up (normally around 3:00am) easier than staying up later with CJ, and love it if get some time before sleep just DH and I. Hope the time your DH is away flies by. Thanks for the info on the feeding frenzy, I looked up on net and 5 weeks is indeed meant to be a wonder week, and have had one new behaviour so far in that CJ has worked out that she can hit the animals on her bouncer to make them swing.
JwithJ - the videos of Jamie on facebook are really cool. The one of him holding up his head especially - I hope CJ can do it that well by the same age. Do you think that Lamaze toy thing you have helped?
AFU - I have no longer got sweats/shivers still a slight pain in my side, but I am hopeful now is not my appendix, DH had to have yesterday off to look after us, but has gone back to work today as I am pretty much ok. CJ feeding frenzy has calmed down a little and she is sleeping a bit better in the day which is great.
Oh question I meant to ask about getting the CJ on medicare, when I filled in the baby bonus form on there I filled in the stuff about medicare and I have now got the first instalment of baby bonus - but do I need to do something extra for medicare or do they do it as part of that form?(I thought the form suggested was done as part of that but now am not so sure and no longer have form). CJ has to have the scan on her hips next week which will cost so wanted to make sure I have her on medicare and able to claim stuff as soon as poss.
Vic - the medicare should have been done all at the same time from that one form - we got given a temp paper medicare card at the time though, so perhaps ring them to make sure its been processed as errors are not uncommon, you should probably have it by now, ours came pretty quick
vic: im not sure if it helped coz hes been trying to lift his head since the day he was born not long and hes gonna be running away from me but he does like it coz it gets rid of the wind we find hard to shift but he gets annoyed when he gets too tired or lazy to hold his head up he likes tummy time more on the floor lol and hes now trying to turn over i didnt think they did that yet
Nicky: How did your appt go this morning? I've heard that six feeds in 24 is just fine, and I'm sure you'd know if Allira wasn't getting enough. How's her weight gain? I understand the second-guessing yourself, but there's no need to. It sounds like things are going really well and that she's a lovely, peaceful little soul.
Kat: Vent away, mate. S'what we're here for. Phoebe has only recently started making eye contact with me (she used to stare at my hair or just next to my head. Still does avoid my eyes sometimes). My theory is that Mum's eyes can 'say' too much at times. If Ivy tends to be a tired baby then it makes sense to me that eye contact would wear her out. Having said that, I'd probably be worried too if my baby wouldn't look at me at all - I don't think it is just your psych background. Like the others have said, talk to someone about it. Best to bounce ideas off a Dr or MCHN you trust than feel anxious for your baby. Its not easy, this gig.
Naomi: I know what you're talking about re the play pen thing. TBH I don't think we have room for one (plus finances are a bit tight). I am hoping that Natty will grow out of it and that the recent increase in violence is just because she's not feeling well... Fingers crossed anyway. Sounds like you got spoiled on your birthday - as you should! I loooooove freshly baked bread. Yum! YAY for getting more sleep
Vic: Glad you are starting to feel better. When did you send your form in? Our Medicare card took a little over a week to arrive, I think... I did ring Medicare cause I wasn't sure about one of the questions on the form and they answered straight away - practically no wait! So if that's anything to go by, giving them a call to check on things is pretty easy.
I fully intended to wait until Natty was 3 before we started trying for a second child, but things just changed. We are done now though. And if this last month has taught me anything, its that I don't want to go through this 'adjustment' period when Phoebe is a toddler, LOL! The other night I said to DH that if I start to get all obsessy about Phoebe's routines and naps and stuff in the coming months that he has to remind me how totally gorgeous she is and that she's our last baby. He promised and he started to say, 'hey, if you do decide in the future that you'd like another baby...' (by this time I was already shaking my head!) '... Well... You can't have one!' PMSL. It was a tender moment.
Natty is on ABs. Its not an ear infection but the Dr reckons the mucous build-up in her chest would be very uncomfortable and she could get an infection over the next couple of days. I'm not totally convinced that giving ABs in case of an infection is such a good idea, but by golly, if this works then we're all going to be much happier.
Phoebe's nose is so blocked, poor thing. I'm hoping she doesn't get Natty's cough as well.
Do any of the other babies have lots of saliva? Phoebe looks like she's frothing at the mouth sometimes, LOL! Natty dobs on her, says, 'Mummy - she's spitting!' It's hard to explain to a 2yo that babies don't have control over that stuff and no, that doesn't mean that you can spit!
Ok, better rescue DH - he's bathing her and I hear yet another tanty has started. *sigh* I've lost count of how many we've had today.
Amy - yes re the 'bubbles/saliva' - DH even asked me today if it was because Bailey is teething - I hope not LOL, but he was born with a tooth so something wacky like early teething isn't out of the questions hahahaha
Kat- I agree with everything the other girls have said. Get checked if your worried cos mum's intuition is really important, but you will prob see problems where others don't even worry because of your work.... It's normal. My DH is a Dr and when we first had Jem home he was counting her breathing rate and getting worried and other stuff like that. She was fine but he couldn't help but look at her with a professional eye tinged with the neurotic worries of a protective daddy! He has also gotten worried at times cos she always frowns at him and won't always settle as easy. He still hasn't gotten a smile. I think Jemima is much more advanced because of being so late. She holds up her head and tracks objects and smiles had stuff and I am sure 3wk olds arn't supposed to, but hey that's just her!
KL- that's great about your sis visit!!! And I am really pleased you finally got a longer sleep!! For all the bragging we did earlier, whilst J still sleeps 6-7 hrs straight it now seems to be in the early evening and so we don't go to sleep with her then and so miss the block sleep. oh well
Naomi- happy b'day for yest! Good job with the cleaning, you go girl! and the bread making.... I think we have a new domestic goddess!
Amy- hows your sleep coming hon?? I am in awe of you sometimes.. You sound liike your having a hard run yet you keep your positive spirit. Good going mummy and keep it up! I hope phoebe lets you rest soon tho and Natty settles for you.
Vic- sorry to hear ur feeling unwell, but glad to hear it's getting better! J is feeding the same, almost constantly thru the day, but still sleeps well in the evening, but starting earlier and earlier in the morning.. oh no... LOL
BG- good luck for the baptisim prep! Jemima is doing the same fussing at the boob sometimes too... she seems to want to have 4 courses to every meal... small feeds close together. other times she is on and off so quickly that I realise she is uncomfortable and sit her up. I am usually rewarded with a burp
JwithJ- Sounds like your little one is like mine! Jemima has had great head control since birth... it scares me how fast she is developing.. having her come so late means I feel like I almost missed the newborn sleepy period tho!
Well MIL gone home... yay!!!!!!!! It was great to have the support and my personal washing fairy, but I felt completely smothered in the end. It is hard when you feel ungrateful but you just can't standit anymore. I was really struggling not to be rude oh well. you do your best don't you. She spent her last week here in tears cos she had to leave, I could only cope with a small amount of that.. god I'm cold hearted sometimes!! Have to say tho I had a great day hear with my little girl on my own!! it was fab.
Jemima put on 400g since last week.. she is now 4800g! such a big girl. She has also just started to coo occassionally, and seems very pleased with herself when she does I posted my birth story for those who are interested Also can I ask all those of you who arn't friends on FB to find me or leave your names so I can search you ? Look for me under Belinda Costello. Pic of me in my wedding dress
Naomi- Im actually feeling not too bad on the tiredness front. I think I can remember u telling me about ur brother and sil living over here. Wow for u cleaning ur whole house. I have no idea how u managed that. Housework for me is minimal for me at the moment, so Im lucky DH likes to clean. Im glad u had a nice birthday, but I would have gone across the road to the workmen and told them to come back another day so u could get a bit of a sleep in. hehehe. Yay for Bailey dropping a night feed. I know what u mean about the little monkeys creating lots of washing. Logan tends to go through at least 2 outfits per day.
Vic- Sorry to hear u haven?t been well. Hopefully the AB?s work, and ur feeling better soon. Re the Medicare thing, I handed in my Centrelink form at Medicare, and they put Logan on my card, and just gave me a print out of the card that will be sent to us.
Amy- Sorry to hear ur having trouble with Natty?s behavior. Maybe it?s a jealous thing, or maybe its just the age. I honestly cant remember what the boys were like at that age. Sorry to hear Natty is not well. Kids always seem to recover quickly.
BG- OMG. 7 times in 8 hrs! Miss E must have been one hungry little cookie. Tut tut for DH breaking the appliances.
Nicky- That?s so sweet and cute about Lachie holding Alliras hand in the car.
Kat- Hugs. Im sorry that people in irl have just brushed the subject aside. Im not really sure about babies looking at people at her age. If u are worried, take her to the paed, and it will put ur mind at rest. Its better to be safe than sorry. Don?t be sorry about coming in for a whinge. Its good to get it all out. J&Z were 5.5 weeks early, and I honestly cant remember when they started catching up to where their normal age was, if that makes any sense. I agree with Naomi on the mothers intuition.
J- The only thing I can probably suggest with J and making his way to the top, would be to maybe tuck him in tighter or wrap him. That might make him stay down the end hes supposed to be at.
Bella- Have added u to FB. I know u would have been grateful for having ur MIL there, but it is nice to have some time to urself after a while.
AFU, Logan slept in his bassinette last night. He woke at 1am for a feed, and then slept til 6.30am, so I had a good sleep. He was getting cold in his bassinette and that?s why he was waking up, and that?s why he slept better when he was in our bed. DH fell asleep in the recliner last night, so I had the bed to myself with no snoring. I have my computer back after not having It for 2 days. I took a cute pic last night of DH and Logan sleeping in the chair, so I will put it on FB when I get a chance.
