OMG Krystie! LOL! That's soooooo funny. Except so much money! Eeeeek! Hope they refund.
J, very cute re Jamie putting Jazzy to bed Sorry that you are having to move again. I hope it's quick and painless finding a new place and getting over there.

We went away with my family for a long weekend. Phoebe is getting sick again. While we were away she was getting temps and DH was fretting. I figured it was just a virus and she'll be over it soon but she is starting to get the cough back again
I am trying not to look too far ahead, trying to take things as they come but my SIL asked me on the weekend whether I would consider getting P tested for immune deficiency. SIL has now raised two immune deficient children and apparently the strain runs down my side of the family. One of my nieces grew out of it, the other is chronically ill and has monthly immunoglobulin infusions at 5 years old. She suggested that Phoebe is sick quite a lot and that my older niece began getting pneumonia at about 2 years old and was in and out of hospital for a couple of years.
It kind of freaked me out. I wonder what you guys would do if you were told something like that? Would you just let everything play out or would you want to give your LO a blood test so that you know what you're potentially up against? I must admit, I really am erring more towards sitting back, simply because the BT would be so traumatic for us. If she has to be admitted again I would ask them to check her Ig when they take bloods from the cannula at that stage.
But does that make me a bit irresponsible or a bit of a slacker not wanting to act on a potential threat to my kid? I honestly don't know what I'd do differently if it turns out she is immune deficient... I can't not work and therefore can't not send her to CC. We would have to move house again to somewhere cheaper and even then we would seriously struggle.
Probably am stressing out over nothing but I trust SIL, she has done this before and is also a nurse...
Sorry for going on. Look forward to hearing your thoughts though...?

Amy - I would rather know, as there is every chance she won't be and then you don't have to stress at all. So I would be going into it being optimistic that it would be nothing but doing it just to rule something out that could always be there stressing me out in back of my mind. I can understand the other side too, but naturally I tend to want to know as much as I can and am also an optimist so see it more as a rule it out. Not sure if that helps.

Amy, I'm also a believer in "better safe than sorry" and also that "knowledge is power". In your situation I'd want to know. Although I'd hate the idea of the blood test too. I guess whether I would have it done straight away would depend on whether there is anything that can be done if something is found? If nothing could be done at this stage, then it would make no difference if you waited to find out. My advice would be to make a dr appointment and discuss it with them. They could probably let you know what sort of odds she has of even having something like this, and that might help you make the decision.

I have a question for the Mummy's with girls. It's about a bit of a controversial topic (on BB anyway). Just wondering if any of the girls have had their ears pierced? I think E has hasn't she? I've been thinking about it for Shayla since I saw one of DH's cousin's baby girl with hers done. I hate the thought of the pain for her, but I also think that she's almost certainly going to want them done one day (I can't even think of one lady I know without pierced ears) so she'll experience the pain one day anyway. And if I have them done now I can pop her straight on the breast afterwards to try to cheer her up. I've been told if you get it done before about 6 months the baby is not able to play with the earrings while they are healing, and it's easier for the parents to keep them clean and healthy while they heal. Another concern is about positioning of the earring though. I've heard that sometimes as the ears grow the earrings can become uneven in the lobe. This happened to my sister and she ended up with one earring in the middle of the lobe, and the other much closer to the outside edge. When she was much older she took the earrings out and let the holes grow over and had them re-pierced. I'm not sure if its actually a common thing to happen, or whether her earrings were just originally not placed correctly. DH is happy to get them done if I want to, but doesn't want to come when she has them done. What are your thoughts?

Oh, and guess what? iTunes refunded my money!!! The guy that emailed me back was so lovely

Thanks for your thoughts girls. I am still unsure... I will probably chat to the GP about it. At this rate we may well be going to see her again during the week.
Great news about itunes, Krystie. I have found them to be helpful in the past too with getting a voucher activated.
Re the earrings, I don't want to offend anyone but I am not a fan. I don't get cross with others for choosing it for their kid but I wouldn't and haven't with my girls. Natty has asked me about them and I have said she can have them done when she's older. (Basically when she's old enough not to play around with them and to take responsibility for the decision herself.) She doesn't hassle me about it though because she remembers VERY clearly what it feels like to have needles and she asked me if it was similar. I said that it was - that they very quickly push an earring into your ear and it does hurt for a little while. On that basis she's quite happy to wait for now, LOL! Her best buddy has earrings which is why she asked me about it.
I personally see it as purely cosmetic and it's really not that important to me whether or not they have them and I can't see how it could be important to a little kid. And then when they are bigger (and btw, I know plenty of women who don't have earrings and tbh I've been tempted to remove mine in the past!) they can make the decision and own it for themselves. (I chose to pierce my ear at the top cartilage when I was 17 and I did it without my parents knowing. It was liberating and entirely my decision and I loved that earring - it totally represented my independence. It hurt like a biatch though! LOL. But the pain was great as it was my decision. Not that the girls would have to wait til they were 17, but you get my drift I hope.)
Understand though that that's just my perspective and what you choose for your kid is of course your decision and something I'd never criticise.

I would want to know too Amy. I think because DH and I are medical backgrounds we would do a bit of research. Aso getting a blood test isn't as bad as you may think. Having said that if you can wait till she is in hospital again it may give you more peace with your decision. It also would depend on whether you think with the info you have their could be any negative consequences from not finding out. Ie could she get really sick without treatment etc?

Krystie, I am not a big fan of the whole earrings on little girls thing myself. I think it looks tacky, but that is purely a personal bias and I have friends who have done it and it is just not discussed because you know what, it is nobodies business but yours. Now that I think of it I think it is because it was a little bit of a rite of passage for me and my sister as young women. You had to be grown up enough to be allowed to have your ears pierced and wear grown up things like earrings. I think that may be why I find it a little off putting, because I associate it with dressing little girls up to be too old. I don't know if that is a fair perception, but sitting here when I examine my thoughts on the subject I think that may be why. End of the day babe, it is completely up to you, and like Amy I would never criticise.

AFM- well and truly struggling with morning sickness. Not coping terribly well. DH is great for helping out but I could punch him sometimes cos he likes to remind me that he remembered how sick I was whereas I think I blocked it all out to a certain degree. Between the regular vomiting and the fatigue throw in the hormonal surges and I am a bit of a mess Never mind. It is what I wanted and I will just have to suck it up!

Bella, I'm sorry you're not feeling great. Hopefully this time it will ease off sooner for you.

Have thought about it a bit more I think the issue is that the BT is traumatic (and both my girls have had one in the last couple of months, Natty to check for dietary deficiencies and Phoebe upon her admission... the memories are clear as day in my mind as I consider it) and the reality is there's no real treatment as far as I know that would help her at this point. I think if she were a candidate for IVIg I would really know about it by now - she would be just so sick. And she's not. I guess I don't know if I really believe there's any immuno-deficiency in her that can't be explained by the fact that she's almost 2 and in regular childcare. So I think I'll stick with the wait-and-see approach for now. Not that you all haven't given me a great deal to think about. I am very keen to find out if she is, but the reality is that if she is, we will end up back in hospital soon enough and I will ask them then.

I have been missing a few of you on FB lately... Do you know if the puter defaults to that stupid setting by itself - the one where you can only see the updates by people you comment on most often? I am going to check as I've only seen pics from a few of you lately.

Amy - I totally hear you on not wanting to get the BT done. DH and I are OVER medical tests with Bailz - the poor kid has had more paediatrician, Dr, Specialist, xrays, scans appointments yadda yadda yadda than I ever would have expected, you get the idea. Every time it's traumatic and every time we all get upset. Last week we had Baileys last Physio appointment which is great, however as he'd grown out of his orthotics, he had to be fitted for new ones - which meant knee high plaster castings for both legs - he was totally beside himself and I cried with him. I think you'd be the best judge of P's health to have an instinct into the need for the test. Yes, you risk that you may miss something, but you also risk testing un-necessarily too, there is no right or wrong.

Krystie - I'm a bit old fashioned and if I had a girl I wouldn't be piercing her ears either. I think I had to wait until I was 13 or something when I was a kid. I do agree it looks pretty so I totally understand your temptation, however I am against anything that makes little girls grow up too quickly. A friend of mine has her daughter doing 'graceful girl' at age 3 which is a type of calisthenics program, and I see her post photos on FB with her all made up - hair, makeup, the works, it makes me worry and its a bit stomach churning. So basically I am totally against anything like that - I know there is a massive jump between ear piercing and 'toddlers and tiaras' but I guess its perhaps breaking into that area in my mind. God, I sound like a Nanna!! Sorry

ETA - I rarely wear earings now, if we are going out and I want to wear them, I practically have to re pierce my own ear sometimes LOL

Amy - i would find out if there is any detriment that can happen with a delayed diagnosis - if catching something early meant treatment could be started and reduce harm, then yes, i'd get the tests done. if it's only going to give you a diagnosis but no change to how it's managed, then i would probably wait. i tend to prefer to know what i'm up against, but if there was a chance it was "something" but finding out for sure would mean trauma to get the result, and no actual treatment, then i would probably assume all is ok but take the appropriate precautions as if it were diagnosed (kinda a harm minimisation thing - assume the best but act to prevent the eventualities if the outcome is the worst kwim?)

KL - yes, E does have her ears pierced. she has tiny little studs that we got done at 12 weeks. she was upset, but boob fixed all. she didn't touch them at all as she was too small. no infections or anything. i know it's a controversial topic, and words like tacky are thrown around, but ultimately, you have to decide what is right for you and yours. i wouldn't push anyone to do it, and wouldn't think any less of someone who chose not to. i, personally, don't see it as a right of passage because i've always had mine. i made the choice to add a second set, and the one up the top that Amy described.

Nay - you so sound like a Nana! i think we'll have to agree to disagree on the forcing of bubbas to grow up with ear piercing. i don't think E having her ears pierced has made her any more grown up than her female peers in here lol there are so many other ways that little girls are forced to grow up far too soon - clothing is far worse IMO - E has hand me down clothes from her cousins, and some of the size 8 clothes is the same body size as her size 2. now i know that girls tend to slim as they grow UP, but this is the same length in the body as well - cos most of the clothes out there are skin tight and midriff baring. i have far more issues with that kind of sexualisation of children than a little bit of bling. E's earings are just a bit of bling she doesn't take out (unlike the clips she loses in minutes - i'm sure our car is half full of mismatched clips)

Oooooh, some of the clothes out there make my stomach churn! And Nay, that sounds like physical culture - I've always hated that they force girls to curl their hair and wear make up, even at a very young age. Natty is so dead-keen on doing some kind of dancing and I have managed to hold her off until she starts school but I really dislike the outfits they have to wear for dancing, and I dislike the 'thin' attitude that goes along with it. Natty is skinny because she doesn't eat a healthy diet. I really don't want her to learn from other kids (or even worse from adults) that she's got an 'ideal' figure. Cause she certainly doesn't have a healthy figure IMO - I'd love her to have a tiny bit more meat on her bones. Sigh. It's really hard to protect your kids from the negative aspects of our culture sometimes.
And re the earrings being a bit of bling, I get it. I don't bother with hairclips much either BG for the same reason! They get pulled out after a while - they're kind of disposable really. Although Natty's at an age where she likes to wear them if she remembers.
Nay, I'm sorry B had to have the casts done again Poor kid. (And poor you. It's so horrible having to deal with something like that. I really didn't fully appreciate it until P got sick. I was an absolute mess, crying constantly & feeling helpless because it feels so mean but is so necessary. And at the same time you're trying to put on a brave face for your kid so they don't panic too much. Gak, it sucks.)

P was on one of those healthy bacteria supplements while we were giving her the ABs but we stopped giving it to her when she finished the course. I think my first course of action will be to reintroduce that along with a vitamin supplement like hospital grade sustegen. I really don't think she needs it because she's got quite a balanced diet but it really can't hurt. Then if this cold develops into something bigger (which if she is Ig deficient, it will) I will get her tested and we would probably see the immunologist. For now though, I can't justify the testing.
Thank you guys so much for your thoughts. I have been considering everything and I must say I'm glad to have a group of friends whose opinions I trust. I think I am more in line with you guys in parenting philosophy than any of my other friends. So again, thanks.

Nay - you so sound like a Nana!
    I know, I know hehehehe
I am old fashioned in some ways and yet modern in others (I am certainly a mixed bag and full of contradictions when it comes to my opinions, I get more conservative as Bailz gets older!!!). But I do actually think pierced ears look pretty, not tacky (E's certainly look cute as!). But I think my old fashioned idea's of "you have to be a certain age" kick in and over-ride that - My strict parents (well Dad anyhoo) have had an influence there!!

Tacky is five earrings in each ear - LOL!!

Good point Amy re reinforcing a healthy body image. My 5 year old neice once told me she never wanted to be fat - I was floored!!!

BG, so sorry to hear E isn't well Nappy rash totally bites. Hope you are not falling-over-tired after such a rough night.

Hey, DH posted a gorgeous vid of P and I've shared on my wall - you have to watch! She is playing her favourite game and I can't get enough of it. It's so cute.

Amy - me neither (only Nai's comments about sewers :-))

Birthday wishes Cara and Phoebe - strictly speaking CJ not 2 yet as was 11:50pm but it is still funny thinking have a two year old - my word time flies!!!!

Insomnia is striking here which is a pain, have now finished work and my mum is here but today was a bit busy due to the birthday (partly my own fault for leaving everything last minute - birthday cake for mothers group I started making at 13:00 and MG started at 14:30!! Looking forward to tomorrow as CJ is in daycare but I am not working.

BG - Sorry to hear E is suffering with her teeth. CJ has all hers through now and didn't suffer much at all although did have dodgy nappies for a little bit which must have coincided with when the teeth broke through. Looks like from pics she had a great birthday.

Sorry girls - just asked DH what the go is with the video. He restricted it to his friends only
I will re-post from the home computer tonight.

Have a great day today Vic - it's lovely when you can just chill out while they are being looked after. Make sure you don't spend the day doing housework or something silly
