Ok, so I'm officially hitting the baby name forums for opinions on 2 girl names we like so far...
originally we liked Milla.
Strong and pretty I think... but I'm wondering if it's now becoming too popular. I know this can happen over time with any name, but we're trying to pick something a little different without being weird..
DH really likes Mya... originally i didn't but it's growing on me
Pronunciation would be 'My-yuh'.... i've seen other spellings like Maia but to me that is 'May-yah' as is Maya... and I wouldn't want her to have to correct people on her name her whole life!
what do you think of the two names and spellings? Which do you prefer??
middle name at this stage is optional... but i do like Ruby. Wouldn't use as a first name due to popularity but as a middle name i like it, it's a tad alternative/retro... well, to me it is, anyway
i would love your opinions and suggestions... girl's names are so hard!!
I love Milla too but didn't think it was that common. I thought Mya would have been more common that Milla. There are a bazillion Mia's at the moment and I know of a Maia that always gets called Mia. Mila was on my girls name list last year.
Girls names are hard. I always thought naming bub was the easiest part but turned out to be a huge stress when DH is involved.
both names are pretty and both go well with Ruby!
i dont think either are overlly common atm i have heard of both but not seen many with these names.
if i had to choose i would choose Mya cause i really like the letter "y" in a name! i just think its a nice letter, looks nice, can be written nicely and i dunno im just a fan!
Milla. For sure. The two Millas I have ever worked with (in 10+ years in childcare at nearly 60 different places) have both been darlings.
The Mayas and Myahs and Maias and Meyers just have people stuffing up their names constantly. I grew up with people mis-spelling my name, but the pronunciation was always right. I think people stuffing it up would just be frustrating.
When I first read Mya, I pronounced it the way you intended - I don't think you'd have any pronunciation issues there. I prefer Mya to Milla; have you considered Myla? My wedding photographer named her daughter Myla (My-lah) and it could be a creative way of combining the two names you like... the only reason it's not on my list is because my #1 girls name is Skyler, and I don't want rhyming children!
I also adore Ruby although it is becoming super common these days (I work in Births Deaths and Marriages ). You can't go too far wrong with pronouncing Ruby, so maybe you could play around with variations? Favourite one I've seen so far is Rubii which I thought was very unique and would have stolen for my names list had it not been suggested by 6-month-pregnant BFF. Ah well
I think they're both lovely. I'm a bit biased towards Milla as that's DD's middle name but DH chose it, as I had Maya on my list as a first name (which he didn't like).
I also like the idea to combine them to make Myla - haven't heard this name before but I think it's really pretty.
i have to vote Milla as that's our number 1 girls name if we are so blessed. We have already decided she would be Milla Jean (jean is dh's nan's name).
I really like Mya as well tho but pronouncication is a bit of an issue (probably the case for milla too).
Milla Ruby
Mya Ruby
hmmm I'm not sure if i like Ruby as a 2nd name with these but i do like the name Ruby very much.
You said you like a bit retro/old fashionned.. what about Betty? or Meg? but probably not as 2nd names with Milla or Mya i suppose.
gee not sure if that really helped you at all lol but good luck!
thank you so much for all your input - its so helpful to get different opinions on how people interpret names...
i can't say i'm really decided between them still
one day i think i prefer mya and the next i prefer milla...
but i'd be happy to keep the 2 in mind and maybe when we see her we'll just know! Not due till July 6 so still got time to think about them...
more food for thought: surname is stewart... and as for middle name, i do like 'Rubi' but perhaps a one syllable name would go better?
I have never heard Milla and LOVE it! Mya is very common I've heard it heaps! so if you are wanting one or the other than Milla is the less common for sure
