Just thought I would post some recipes in here as we were given a book full of baby and toddler recipes when Jonah was born. Seeing as I won't be able to use them for ages I thought I would share them with you all and see how you go with them.

From 6 months:

Ground Rice Cereal

Prep time: 5 mins
Cooking time: 5 mins
Makes 6 serves


1/4 cup short grain polished rice
1/2 cup water

Grind the rice to a smooth powder in a spice grinder or use a mortar and pestle.

Put in a small saucepan and stir in the water. Stir over low heat for 2-3 mins, or until the mixture becomes thick and creamy.


From 7 months:

Baby Oat Porridge

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Makes 3-4 serves


1/4 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup milk

Grins the rolled oats to a fine powder in a spice grinder or a small food processor.

Put the oats in a small saucepan and gradually whisk in the milk and 1/4 cup water until well combined. Slowly bring to the boil and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, or until the mixture thickens. Remove from the heat.



Stewed Beef and Vegetables

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 40 minutes
Makes 2 serves


90g lean round or chuck steak or veal steak
1 new potato
1 small carrot
1 baby onion
1/2 garlic clove, crushed
small piece of bay leaf
sprig of parsley

Put the steak, potato, carrot and onion in a small saucepan. Add the garlic, the piece of bay leaf and parsley sprig, then cover with the water. Cover, bring to the boil, the simmer gently until the meat is tender. Add more water as needed.

Discard the baby leaf and parsley. Blend the ingredients with a little of the cooking liquid.



Steamed Chicken and Apple

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Makes: 1 serve


1/2 red cooking apple, peeled and cored
2 boneless, skinless chicken tenderloins

Thinly slice the apple and cut the chicken into small cubes. Place the chicken tenderloin pieces in a steamer and arrange the apple slices over the chicken. Set over a saucepan of boiling water and steam for about 5 minutes, or until tender.

Puree or finely chop the chicken and apple, together with a little of the cooking liquid.



Homemade Rusks

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 1 hour
Makes: About 80


1 loaf unsliced wholemeal bread

Preheat the oven to 130 degrees. Cut the bread into 2.5cm thick slices. Remove the crusts and cut each slice into strips about 1.5cm wide.

Bake the strips on an ungreased baking tray for about 1 hour 1 hour, or until the rusks are dry and crisp. Turn them occasionally.

Col and store in an airtight container for up to 7 days.



Semolina Pudding

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Makes: 1 serve


2 tablespoons semolina
1 teaspoon unsalted butter
1 cup milk or cooled boiled water

Put the semolina in a small saucepan, then add the butter and milk. Simmer covered until the semolina is completely tender.

Variation: Stir in 1 tablespoon each of finely chopped sultanas and dried apricots with the butter and milk.
