what's the net thing? is it like a popsicle?

i think ive made a boo boo w his feeding.
oopy has been having solids for brunch but i havent been givign him milk cos he eats and then falls asleep. but i do add about 60ml of formula into his food.
hmmm. do you give the full milk amnt, 180ml, then give solids? poopy seems happier now eating his solids and it's a big struggle getting him to finish his milk any time of day.

JJ - I have one of the net feeders..lol..I havent used it yet only because I wasnt sure if this was a good age or not to start...THANKYOU! Will brave it with Noah to see how he goes.. (i never had one with DD so waited until she had teeth to try the harder foods..lol)

Prama - Yeh give the milk first then wait a smidge then give his solids... as JJ said the milk is still the main priority at the mo! Have fun!!!

Sue - Yay!!!! On Sophies first toothy peg! Which one is it??

Ash - Still exciting even though if its just cut the gum!!...although its been a few days now, has it come through?

Minky- I've had strawberries, orange and kiwifruit in the net feeder. Amber just chomps into it. Its good because she cannot get any chunks into her mouth. She doesnt like to hold it for long herself but will keep her mouth open for us to feed her!
Prama- How much milk is poopy having throughout the day? I think as long as they have a minimum 600 mls (i could be very wrong) per day they are ok. But hey if he is healthy and thriving etc...
The net feeder has big net/mesh thing where you put fruit or vegies in. You then screw a top into it. The babies can then chew/suck on the chunks without choking. I have the sassy brand and got it at Big W.

I have some great news guys, DD slept through the night for the first time!! Woo hoo!!! Only once, but I am still very excited!

minky - I love that pic of Noah. Is that 2 dummies stuffed in his mouth? He he. DD has started putting her dummy in when I am feeding her. I don't think she realises that she can't suck on her dummy and eat at the same time! Funny little things.

jen - I just bought one of those net feeders too. Yet to try it but a friend's DD loves it and it looks like a great idea! I just bought some rockmelon to try in it. Thanks for the 6 month wishes!! Happy 6 months to Amber today!! (Her birthday is easy for me to remember - it's the same as mine!)

Ash - woohoo on DS's tooth, how exciting! No sign of teeth here yet.

prama - Poopy is looking gorgeous. I have heard of shaving the head to make the hair grow back thicker and more even. DH keeps saying we should do it to DD but I'm not sure! Her hair is pretty bad, all uneven and bald in patches, plus it is changing colour, so it's a bit of a mess at the moment!

sue - woohoo on DD's first tooth!

Bun - congrats!!! we're at the stage that poopy isnt sleeping thru the night anymore!
we fly back to syd on sat, hopefully his routine will change again. for the better!

mum said my hair was bad, patches too. so she had me shaved twice and it all came good. i then had thick curly hair. with winter it might be a bit hard as she mighgt get cold, but then you could hide her head with cute beanies!!

Thanks for posting about the net feeders I didn't have one with the boys I think I will have to go and buy one. DD loves rice cereal but so far has spat everything else out. I know its early days so I will keep persevearing. The boys were the oppisite hated rice cereal but couldn't get enough vegies. he he

I keep looking at Sophie's mouth to see if there are any more teeth, she has had the reddest cheeks. Have been at FunBugs ( a kids play centre ) for a birthday party today ( yes another one ) so the boys have crashed. So DD and I are having chats while I type.

Minky -- DD has cut one of her bottom incisors ( bottom front )

There is a guide on the teething rusks when most of their teeth come through ( on the heinz and bellamy's brands anyway) so we know what to look forward to. From memory their eye teeth or canines usually cause the most trouble but they don't get these until around 18months!!!

Hi all!!!

Finally a chance to catch up again! We are back Down Under and have been fighting jetlag and very short day sleeps in the last two weeks, all this together with computer problems didn't make it easy to catch up! So, sorry girls, no personals for now but hope to catch up soon!

We have tried solids for about a week now, but bubby is not impressed , so far we have tried Farex, apple and pear (half a teaspoon), but most of it comes out again straight away and then he turns his head away... Mummy's milk must be too tasty... Will have to wait a while and try again later.

While in the Netherlands we might have discovered something against wind; I took some Infants Friend over with us, but the bottle dropped and we lost it all. So I had to tried the Dutch remedy, which is Fennel tea. Since I have been drinking a cup of Fennel tea a day (still breastfeeding), Jasper has been so much calmer and he does no. 2's now without us noticing it, whereas before he would be grunting and screaming two days before it finally came out! So relieved!

Sorry for the selfish post! Hopefully I will be able to keep up from now on! Happy six months to all bubbies!

Poopy's 6mths today!!! cant believe he;s 0.5of a year!

question with solids:
are you girls giving a milk feed before or after solids?
poopy is so fussy with his milk feed but is so much better w solids.he drinks 180ml.
i was giving him his 3rd feed just solids with abt 30 or 60ml of milk in it. I was just told that i should him his milk first then solids. but if he has 180ml, then he wont want his solids, and it will be too much for him. dont want him to get obese.
how much milk should i give before his solids, or how much after.
is it ok to skip milk feed and just give solids? he takes about the size of the baby food jar.

Hi Guys,

Prama -- its a bit tricky to know what to give them when. I have a great book called Baby and Toddler meals by Robin Barker. It gives recipes and a guide on how to introduce solids, although I found some of the information differed from what the Maternal and Child Health Nurse gave us.

Anyway as guide

Early Morning 4.30 - 6 am breast/bottle feed

Mid Morning 9 -11am Breast/bottle feed
fruit/cereal

Early Afternoon 1-3 Breast/bottle feed
pureed vegies/ baby pumkin soup
rice and vegie puree

Early evening 4.30 - 7pm Breastfeed/bottlefeed
vegies / chicken soup etc

I introduced the evening meal first with the boys and then gave a breast/bottle feed before bed. After a few weeks I introduced lunch and the breast/bottle feed was after the meal.

Generally at this stage if you offer the breast/bottle first and then offer solids half an hour or an hour later. But if Lakshman is more interested in solids at a particular time of day just feed him then!! and then give him a drink a little later.

The net feeder is shaped like a big dummy with a net on the bottom half, it has a lid and you can put soft age appropriate food in it and give it to bub to munch on. The idea being their will be no lumps or bumps.

Hope this helps it is just a guide and some days they eat more than others so see how you go!!

when you give a bottle feed, i assume you're giving the full amount and then followed by solids.
but if i give lakshman solids first, i dont think he will drink his full 180 half an hr later.
even with his bottles after 4hrs he doesnt want tofinish it all. im giving him his bottle first and tehn will give his solids half an hr later, im just worried he wont eat that.
sigh...

Prama -- yes DD has a full bottle. If she has slept all night she has her milk and then about an hour later she has a few teaspoons of rice cereal. She is still having 4 - 5 bottles a day but usually 4. She then has solids again early evening around 4.30 - 5.30 but she isn't liking the vegies so again at the moment it is rice cereal with a teaspoon of vegies to try. DD isn't that interested in her solids as yet so she is still having plenty of milk.

Each baby is different. If lakshman isn't finishing his milk maybe give him half a bottle prior to his solids and then offer the other half a little later. He might be ready to drop a feed if he is eating enough solids. But milk is the most important at this stage and solids are just getting them used to different tastes etc

With the guide I gave you, it is often a few months before they are actually eating 3 meals a day. If Lakshman is hungry at a certain time maybe offer his solids first and then give him his milk after??? and then see how he goes with his other drinks during the day. He will drink what he needs so don't worry too much I know its hard.

Anyway enough rambling from me

thanks so much sue! i understand things better.
he was so hungry and crying his eyes out, and then only drank 120 of his 180. he's fallen asleep. when he wakes up, will give him a little bit of his solids.
tbh i was actually happy giving him solids, cos he ate it all up and there was less worry abotu him drinking his milk. ive asked his doc if i should change his formula but he said it wasnt neccessary.

A quick question for those with boys..

Has your lovely lad discovered his nether regions yet?? As soon as I put Noah in the bath thats the first thing he goes for...and he dosent take his hand off it the whole time he is in there!! (He has one of those seats so he is upright.) I am sure that its totally normal..but as a mum of a girl previously I am shocked that he is so interested in it already!!

Apart from that...all is well....am off to Perth tomorrow , dreading the logistics of travelling with two kids by myself...hopefuly will be okay!!!

How is everyone going with solids? My maternal health nurse told me the other day that we can go to 3 meals a day and add mince now! WOW!

Hi Everyone,

He he yes what a big difference in boys and girls isn't there!!

I am feeling completely disorganised and falling behind on everything. DD has been having solids for nearly two weeks now rice cereal and fruit in the morning and vegies at night. She now likes to stay up longer about 2.5hrs and is taking a lot longer to settle and then only has an hour of sleep. I got up at 6.30 this morning and still didn't have my breakfast until 9.30!!!

We had our 6 month needles on tuesday which went well. Sophie is now 8.02kgs and is 68.5cm long. Don't think we will be in 00's for much longer.

Jen -- My MCHN suggested leaving meat/chicken until 8 months. Its funny how many different recommendations their are. Sophie isn't really interested in her solids I am lucky to get about 3 teaspoons of anything into her. The boys whoofed anything down.

Anyway better go and do some jobs (neverending story)

Hi all,

This month has been so chaotic for us; first the jetlag that took about a week to recover from, then the ridiculously cold weather, 6 month needles that went ok but made him a bit sooky and now Jasper and I are both battling a cold, ggggrrrrrrrr; bring on spring!!! Can't wait... I wanna go back to normal.... Whatever that is....

Sorry about the winge, just have enough of little or no sleep and feeling miserable. Besides that I miss my family a lot more since we have just been there and feel like a real cow for doing this to them....

OK, on the upside, Jasper is changing a lot now. Much more responsive, loves his jolly jumper, likes to sit up and does a lot of tummy time in his cot. He rolls so much in his cot that we never know where in the cot we are going to find him in the morning! He still sleeps quite well, a bit more night waking with this cold, but hopefully that is on the way out. I also think he is teething as he keeps rubbing his teether against his gums and yesterday there was a bit of blood on it, not sure if I can feel something yet, he doesn't let me look in his mouth. Still not into solids, will make an appointment with MHCN for next week and see what she thinks... Any other bubbies not into solids yet or are we the only ones still on milk only?
Day sleeps are still very short; usually 0.5-1 hr about three times per day. He gets quite cranky if I try to keep him up for longer than 1.5 hours. At night he sleeps from 6.30 pm till about 5 am with usually only one feed. Lately two due to the cold.

Bubby awake... BBL...
