Has anyone used Infants Friend to help with colic and calming? The nurse suggested it might be good for JD as he gets himself so worked up when he has wind that he wont relax to let it pass. It says on the bottle from 1 month of age, and JD is well 3 weeks so its not that far off. Just curious if it has helped anyone.

How is it that I got almost a full nights sleep last night as DH did the late and early shifts and I am still tired! Probably this heat although we have air con so we are not suffering like so many others without it. I just cant wait for my bleeding to stop completely so I can go into the pool again. It stops for a fews days and then its back again, is that normal?

Well just thought I'd try out the pump before going and getting the bottles and it doesnt work, I have no idea but thre was no suction whatsoever. We're just going to go to the baby shop and ask them what they think is best. I have been told I have loads of milk and it comes out really easy so will probably just get a manual one!

Steph; I usually feed JD about 100ml per feed. Sometimes he wants only 80 or 90 ml sometimes he wants 115 and even 125ml. But 100 ml is the average. I pumped my left breast this morning as mornings seem to get the best flow and stopped pumping once I reached 100ml and it only took about 10 - maybe 15 min to get that. I feed him straight from the right breast at lunchtime today so now both breasts are feeling empty. But because I am 50/50 with formula feeding my milk supply may slow down, I am not worried it makes it easier for when I have to go back to work at 3 months.

P.S. Marshy! Congratulations and well done, so glad you are recovering well sounded like a rough labor and birth you poor thing!

Yep tried Infants Friend, got the wind out easy but still didn't solve our problem, so does it work? Yes.

I think our issue is called Lactose Overload, I had heard of it before and think I had a few issues with it with Noah. It would explain a lot. Xaviers poos are so frothy and he is always trying to pass wind or poo and it seems to hurt him.

Kim it might have been the same for you too, sorry it didn't work out for you though

This is from the ABA website

    Lactose overload
Lactose overload can mimic lactose intolerance, and is frequently mistaken for it. An overload is commonly seen in babies consuming large amounts of breastmilk, ie in mothers with an oversupply. This may result in symptoms such as an unsettled baby with adequate to large weight gains, more than ten wet and many dirty nappies in 24 hours. Baby is usually less than three months old. Ironically, a mother may perceive that she has a low supply because her baby always seems to be hungry. The nappy count can be the biggest clue to what's happening. What comes out the bottom must have gone in the top!

There is a vicious cycle here - a large-volume, low-fat feed goes through the baby so quickly that not all the lactose is digested. (More fat would help slow it down.) The lactose reaching the lower bowel draws extra water into the bowel, and is fermented by the bacteria there producing gas and acid stools. The latter often causes a nappy rash. Gas and fluid build-up causes tummy pain and the baby 'acts hungry' (wants to suck, is unsettled, draws up his legs, screams). Sucking is the best comfort he knows, and helps move the gas along the bowel. This tends to ease the pain temporarily, and may result in the wind and stool being passed. Since the baby indicates that he wants to suck at the breast, his mother, logically, feeds him again. Sometimes it is the only way to comfort him. Unfortunately this provides another large feed on top of the other one, which hurries the system further, and results in more gas and fluid accumulation. The milk seems to almost literally 'go in one end and out the other'.

Many mothers whose babies have had this problem have found it helpful to temporarily change from an on-demand breastfeeding routine. They aim to slow the rate at which milk goes through baby, so they feed one breast per feed, or set aside say a three-hour period (adjust this according to the severity of the oversupply) and every time baby wants to feed during this period, they use the same breast. Then they use the other breast for the next three hours, etc. This way, each time baby returns to the already used breast, he gets a lower-volume, higher-fat feed that helps slow the system down. When the baby's symptoms are relieved, the mother is able to go back to a normal according-to-need breastfeeding routine.

Where the problem is severe and/or long-lasting, it might be worth trying to determine why there is an oversupply of breastmilk.

    * Is the mother timing feeds and switching sides after a set number of minutes?
    * Has something caused the baby to be unusually unsettled that has resulted in frequent comfort sucking and an oversupply?
    * Is secondary lactose intolerance adding to the overload situation?
    * Sometimes a mother is worried about having a low supply and overcompensates and overstimulates her supply.
    * Perhaps the baby has been unwell, or is suffering discomfort from a difficult birth, and sought comfort in frequent feeds.
    * Some mothers just have a tendency to oversupply - there is a normal variation in this as in everything else about our bodies. In days gone by, these may have been the mothers who could have made a living as wet nurses!
Someone wanted quantities of EBM to feed? The Baby Love book says a rough guide of 150ml per kg of body weight for every 24 hour period for babies under 3 months of age.

So the bottles can be 60-120mls each from 0-4 weeks
    120-150ml from 4-8 weeks
    and 150-240mls from 8-12 weeks

Xavier is screaming again, might bbl!!!

I got an avent manual one and tried to use it last night but couldnt get any milk out even though it was coming out so easy when I tried to hand express some. Maybe I'll just try it and different times and maybe when im feeding off the other boob to get some. The woman in th baby shop said we had to buy the bottles for it separately so we did but got home and opened te pack and there was 2 in it... Can;t understand why she did that!

We were out for a really long time last night ( not through any choice of mine) and I think Larissa just got so tried that she got herself into a right mess and cried for ages even when I had done everything I could think to settle her. I think seeing her like that made me the saddest I'd ever been!

Yeah I am the same Steph, my heart breaks when I hear JD scream and cry. But nurse said that crying to us means pain and sadness but to babies its not always about pain and sadness. This is their ONLY way of communicating so sometimes we just need to understand that they are just trying to talk and that is their only language. I'd like to say that helped but my instincts still is to get upset when he is upset. best thing to do is give Larissa to Tris and get a breath of fresh air and come back when your calm down.

By the way I have the Avent Travel electric pump. It has a belt clip so I can walk around the house while pumping. Although it looks funny cause I have one hand holding the pump on my boob. i try to do it while JD is asleep or when DH is feeding him so I can relax while doing it.

I gave JD 100ml of breast milk that I pumped yesterday for his morning feed and he wanted more so I put him on the boob for another 15 minutes and it was only then that he started drifting off again. Man this kid is going to eat me out of house and home! (ha ha) as long as he is happy I don't care how much he eats, but I will laugh if the nurse says he has put on heaps more weight when she comes back again next week.

When will they start to want to play, what age do they want to interact with you? I can't wait to see him smile and play!

Amanda you can start tummy time with JD...from memory my girls started smiling around 7-8 weeks of age....

Had a bit of a chucky night....bought up most of his bottle...think cos he had a lot of junky stuff on his chest....i was coated in vomit....and then when i changed his bum i got hosed down...along with my bed spread, clothes and legs...LOL On the upside he then slept from 1am-7am and gone back to bed at 730 and still asleep now!!

I have now linked Zachs name in my siggy to his personal picture gallery too!

Oh yeah...his eye is still crappy, so took him to the dr's last night...for them to say a dr wont see him cos he isnt on our Medicare card yet, so id have to pay $53....which i was fine about doing, then their EFTPOS was down so i was told id have ot go get cash out then come back....stuff that...i left and now trying the BM trick to see if it helps. Til last night id just being using Fess Little Eye wipes with no luck.

Well we think that infants friend is helping JD. He seems to get his wind up a lot easier and when he was with nan for most of yesterday she said he was burping and farting like a trooper. So thats great that he behaved for them, as I was quiet anxious about that. Although as soon as we came to pick him up he started screaming, talk about getting a complex! They came over later for dinner as well and he was playing up again, but we eventually got him down. He was just tired though and fighting it.

I was apart from him from 11am till about 4.30pm and at first I just sat around feeling like something was missing it just felt wrong! Until I called a couple of times to check he was doing ok and when I knew he was sound asleep and happy then I was able to relax. But I was busting to see him when we finally got home. Then all I wanted was cuddles and all I got was crying and screaming then DH came and took him off me so I felt a bit jilted. I have to say although this may sound strange, it was nice to be away from JD for a little while cause it made me realise how much I love him and miss him, even when he is crying. Does that make sense?

Anyway, we took so long cause we had to swing past Good Guys and pick up a small portable air conditioner cause we just can't seem to keep JD's room cool enough for him to sleep in unless it almost midnight. Otherwise it seems to be around the 27 degree and higher mark most of the day and he gets way too hot! DH is going to try and install it today for him. Man we have spent more money than we expected to lately. I thought we were prepared but I was wrong.

P.S. JD has an appointment with my chiropractor on Friday. The nurse suggested it cause babies get so curled up in the womb that a little adjustment if needed can really help with digestive and wind problems. I know my chiropractor treats babies and she has worked wonders on me and DH so will be interesting to see how it goes. I hope he finds it helpful.

Anyway, have a great Australia Day everyone!

Hi ladies. I hope you and your darling bubbies are all doing really well.

Amanda glad you are finding Infants friend to help. Ive never used it myself but it does seem to be quite popular. Hope the chiro can help with your little guy..poor darling. Wow on getting out too ..big day ...glad he was good for your nan.

Tash glad you found us. Happy three weeks to Judd. Hope you are having fun settling in as a family of 5.

Kim sorry you have had some chucky days. Hope Zacs eye is clearing up. Ive had that with Sammy and just used to squirt him with breast milk lol..it seemed to help it clear up.

Awww Steph, its heartbreaking when they do cry isnt it.

    Hows Ryley going Kirsten?

Gosh Sarah thats awful for little Xavier. Hope you get some answers soon. Does he drain the breast fully...i know frothy yellow poos can also be from not getting the hind milk..ive always had a fast let down so have had to make sure bubs drains the breast before offering the other one.

Well weve had a lovely week. Ruby is a dream, shes such a calm placid baby. Shes feeding well..every 2 hours around the clock which is causing a bit of sleep deprivation but she rarely cries, is putting on weight and just enjoying being adored! Hope you are all having a lovely Australia day! We are heading into town later for the fireworks and festival..kids are getting showbags etc. I will sling Ruby so think she will be fine with all the loud noises..fingers crossed anyways!
