Firstly, I agree your DH's way is totally dumb!

I'm totally obsessed with names. For DS I whittled down an extremely long list to about 20 of both girls & boys names and put them in rough order of how much I liked them. DH of course refused to discuss names except to say he didn't like them (for no reason at all) or he knew someone who might have had that name 20 years ago . I had my favourite for both but he flat out refused to even consider them. I managed to convince him to agree that if I could have my fave boys name as the middle name, he could choose the first name from my list. He picked my number two name.

DD was a bit different. I gave him my long list and we both (separately) went through and picked the names we liked enough to seriously consider naming our child. We had about 10 girls names that we agreed on. Then we both put them in order of how much we liked them. We agreed on the top four funnily enough so from there we just tried each of them out until the right one fit. Again it was my number 2 name . We struggled with a boys name. DH wanted to have his name as the middle name but hated any name I suggested as a first name and I settled on one I didn't love. Luckily we didn't need it.

With Liebling, we started talking names over a year before he was born. Just on and off. At 14w pg we were on a long car journey and decided we had 4 hours of each other's comany so would pick the name. We were still struggling with a girl's name when he was born! We had one, just not set in stone and not "perfect", just one we didn't hate.

With Stormageddon, once again we have a boy's name picked (surprisingly easy - although it may change), but no girl's name. DH no longer likes the name we had for Liebling. So I have a list of about 50 names I really like and he can pick from one of those when we need to pick a name.

With both, DH and I both get to pick a middle name. My choice first. Middle names are family names (Liebs is named after both my grandfathers then DH's family name... although his first name is also my g-g-g-grandfather's name, girl's name would have been a family name I also have and then another from my side as DH doesn't like his side; Stormy is going to be DH's name then my dad's name as middle names or same as before for a girl). First names are fired off and we just agree what we like the sound of.

I wasn't too keen on DS's second middle name at first, but then I found out he's named after three breweries. Parenting win!

When I was pg with DS1 I was convinced he was a girl. I also couldn't picture myself with a son (ironic.. no?) and struggled with boys names. I was only 9 weeks though when it hit me like a bolt of lightning. I said to DP " I know it's a bit out there.. but what about A x e l?" his response was " Ya know. .. I don't hate it." lol. When I woke up in ICU someone asked me his name. I couldn't speak as I was intubated but I wrote it down. Nobody argued. Ever seen someone argue with the lady who woke from a coma? I didn't think so... He got his middle name from my drug induced delirium. I swear DPs mother (who is sadly not with us) put her hand on my shoulder and told me to use her brothers name - Timothy

With DS2 I struggled with any names at all. I only had 2 I liked, one of each. As soon as I was able to see him.... I just blurted out K a n e. It was just right. He's named after both our brothers by middle name.
