Yeah those comments are great too aren't they? I have had some form of PND/A as well as AND/A with each of my pregnancies/babies and my mother has no idea. Or she was in denial. I could call her crying my heart out and she'd have some crappy unhelpful words of 'wisdom'. Of all people you think will understand and help, it's your mum, and to be so sorely disappointed (for me) is a truely horrible thing. I thought my mum would be an awesome nanna. But she's not.
are you sure we don't have the same mother?

I hope not...lol. Hopefully yours is better than mine...but sorry if she isn't. It's so sucky. Especiallyif you have friends with awesome mums and you see what you're REALLY missing out on.

"While you are under my house you are under my rules. When you have your own house you can live however you want" because invariably my mother is not happy regardless of how I live my life in my own house under my own rules.

"Oh, is that how you do it these days. Things really have changed because WE never did anything like that". This coming from MIL with one of those down the nose sort of sneers so you know there's something so much *****ier she wants to say.

I'm sorry to hear all the bad mum stories. Makes me all the more grateful for the incredible one I have.

I will never tell my daughter if she announces she is divorcing her husband, "oh, that seems ever such a shame when you've just had a new kitchen put in."

    "you're so melodramatic"
    "you're over sensitive"
"you have such a vivid imagination"
"if you don't stop crying, I'll give you something to cry about"
"you are so difficult to love"

hmmm I will never discount how my children feel or make them feel inadequate or unworthy of love no matter what they do.

I never say to my children:

I cant wait til your children are teenagers and give me the hell you gave me, oh wait they will be worse than you if you can believe that.

    You're doing it wrong.

You dont deserve such a lovely partner, why cant you be more like them anyhow?

my MIL is known for making comments like most of these...

So I will never say to my DD...

"your making a rod for you back by letting her sleep with you"
"well she must still be hungry" when DD was crying from overtiredness
"when scott was a baby we use to put glycerine(SP?) on the dummy" plus about million things that you would not do today!

My mum on the other hand is amazing. i love her so much, and am very thankful for her help through my pregnancy, birth and now parenting of my daughter

I will never say, "Just give her a bottle."
Yep. I got that one too. As soon as we knew DD was sick I was being pressured into buying formula early, because they didn't think that I could establish breastfeeding to a premmie. I didn't end up buying it early, but as soon as we got home my supply dropped. I know now that if I'd kept going I would have got her breastfeeding.
But, I just kept being told - "Give her formula. You can't breastfeed a premmie. If you don't give her a bottle she'll end up back in hospital."
The stress caused me to lose all milk and put her on formula.
There are days I cry everytime I make her a bottle because I felt pressured into forumula feeding.

I will never say "I'm sure she's not acting up as much as you think she is"
    "You're just oversensitive"
    "She's a good girl, I don't know what you're complaining about"
