i have been with medibank private for ages and had my twins with them
they do cost a bit more than most funds , but have well and truly got our moneys worth.
When i went in when i was pg with my twins- they actually made sure that we were on family coverage-so that the second twin was covered. On singles cover one baby is covered- on family- everyone is covered
our babes were in NICU and special care for 33 days - the fees for special care 5 years ago were $1100 per day per baby and NICU was well over $2,000 per day. Their ambulance rides were $33,000 one way and $20+ , 000 the other plus their pead visits at least daily at $55 a pop- we were bill for 80+ visits
we totalled up that the bill for them and myself was well over $80,000 and we did not pay a single cent of it. The only fees out of pocket were our OB, Surgeon assistant and Anethsist.
i know that if i had been in a public hospital - it all would have been covered as well, but my DS deterioted really quickly one day and it was only because he had continuity of care and that is Pead just thought he was just not right and just not himself that he investiaged it further and it turned out that he had got a staph infection in his blood stream that nealy killed him! I really do that the level of personal care that you get in the private system is worth paying for- but that is just my opinion. My son did in end up in RCH a public hospital at one stage and the level of care was fantastic, but we were dealing with a different person all the time and the continuity wasn't there.
HTH and defintaly family cover is best with the highest Hospital cover you can get.
