Ahh, what a lovely afternoon Between the sun, daylight savings and a relatively clean loungeroom, the only thing that topped it off was walking down to Kidsfest with Oscar in HAB and Odin on a leash (not that I really needed it, but it's good PR and by-law abiding behaviour!). It was pretty good and I'm definitely going to take Oscar next year. There was a baby animal farm and a milking cow (sign said 'milking demonstrations' and when I got to the ABA stall a few doors down I said to the counsellor "I'll give them a milking demo, Oscar's hungry!"). There were selling stall, educational stalls, food stalls, games for free, rides, a snake handling stall, a karaoke tent! You could make a whole afternoon of it with older kids. Anyway, being a local event I knew heaps of people who were there, so it was very stop/start on my way around the grounds. When I was sitting at the ABA stall I fed Oscar and the little bugger fell asleep...making me wish I'd brought the buggy. But he transferred easily enough back to the HAB and is still asleep as I type. It was really lovely to see some other mummies sitting on the strawbales provided breastfeeding their babies For future reference, Melbourne Junies (or visiting interstate Junies!), the Dandenong Ranges is very breastfeeding friendly - no-one bats an eyelid, really, if you just sit and feed in a cafe, on a train, on a bench. Jess - SO sorry the show was rained on The Dandenong Show (back in the days when I was a Dandy girl!) is in November and it was really hit and miss - some years would pour and it would be freezing and other years would be very nice, coming off the back of a warm netball finals season (cos the showgrounds is where the netball is). That's how I remember it, anyway. Hopefully the other local festivities are good during the week for you!
Sorry, Rory, I just couldn't get into the most recent Star Wars films. Maybe that means I'm not as big a fan as I thought I was, but I think my favourite is Empire, too (though for years I thought it was Return of the Jedi, and I am still conflicted about this). I guess I liked the Carrie Fisher/Harrison Ford element of these films. I went on to decide that Raiders of the Lost Ark is actually one of my alltime favourite films, so maybe it WAS the Harrison Ford Factor (henceforth HFF). I hate that the worst film I've even seen also had HF in it...anyone tortured by Hollywood Homicide? I had it on a NZ flight and couldn't even finish watching it, it was so bad. That must have been the JHF (Josh Hartnett Factor). But I digress. I, too, had a very strong image of Neeny in a custom made, white plastic number with crotch guard...theme music and all...
My dad's coming over for dinner tonight and I'm planning a roo stroganoff, but if I find that the sour cream I have is no good anymore (it's been there a while...), then I might just tweak the recipe and make it a something else by using coconut milk instead...that might be interesting! I've never dared to play THAT much with a recipe from a book before...I'm a bit unadventurous with recipes, but if I'm throwing something together that I'm not following a recipe for I'll produce something edible. My sister always got frustrated at how I would be at a loss if I didn't have EXACTLY the ingredients listed. She'd say "You don't have to follow it exactly, you can play around with it"...but not being the culinary genius I obviously should be, I can't deal with this prospect at all.
I'll see if I can put Oscar down and get a fire going, cos it's cooling down now...
Oh, yesterday after swimming (DP came with me, for all it was worth (he was so useless, I had to thrust Oscar into his arms so that he could dry him while I dried myself...honestly, I'm much more efficient on my own and I thought he might actually help - wrong!) we went to MIL's to visit and to get her to cut DP's hair (she does a great job, I don't think a paid cut somewhere else would make him look any better ) and we stayed there till we had to get back home, have showers and then head straight back out again. DP was asking her about her week and what she does on each day, I'm pretty sure to illustrate to me how busy she is and not to take it personally that she doens't come round to see Oscar. Yes, everyday she has something on, but that doesn't demonstrate to me why we have to be the ones who have to squeeze into her schedule and run over there for her few free hours. To me it's a reason why SHE should call ahead and ask when I'm free so she can come over, or ask us to go over. There's a reason I don't get bored enough to watch TV...I'm not home enough, or when I am I'm doing things like cleaning up (which I could have had help with in the early days, but I wasn't going to ask for it and she wasn't offering). She's not anything like your typical MIL experience (well, the stereotyped and oft confirmed experience), but I still don't feel guilty that she hasn't seen Oscar much because whilst I AM busy most weeks, I have a baby and I definitely have times that I am at home and able to take visitors. And what's wrong with visiting your grandchild in their own home when you live around the corner? Why should I have to pack up our nappies and extra clothes AGAIN cos grandma is too busy to come over here??? Sorry, that's my half grrr. I like to spend time with her, but that's the thing - what time? It's not like she's a trial to be around.
ok, going to have another drink and then see to this fire.
