Just put attempt number 2 of IK's slice into the oven... added currents... used proper sugar, made a slightly larger quantity of it because the last batch was a fraction too small for my slice tin and I wasn't going to go out and buy another tin. *fingers crossed* Oh and regarding the spreading of that tricky top layer: I cleaned my hands thoroughly and gently used my fingertips to join the dots... much easier... a bit like forming shortbread which is done with finger tips too.
