Yeah, that situation would have played out very differently in our home. DD1 is entitled to her opinion, but we are the parents and assert authority over her, so our command overrides her opinions and desires. It isn't military school, she can still talk, but she likely would have been disciplined for not being obedient (and then praised when she was).

It is amazing how vast the perspectives are on parenting.
