Default Viable pregnancy if hcg levels not doubling

    Hello girls

I was wondering if anyone could tell me is there any hope if levels arent doubling in the 2 days like they are sposed to. My scan was inconclusive. My levels are going up but they arent doubling. Is there any hope at all?

    Hi Jo,

What a stressful time for you! I'm sorry that you're going through this ATM - it can be a real worry.

As for your results not doubling every 48 hours....they don't have to exactly double IYKWIM. I know that when I was having HCG monitoring, mine didn't double every 48 hours either - they had definitely increased, but not exactly doubled each time and I was panicking, but everything turned out just fine. Just as we are all individual, so are our HCG results, so bare that in mind.

What have your results been and how often have you been having the tests? When was your scan? Have you spoken to your Doctor at all?

    Hi Jo,

What an awful time for you.

Some one else had there bloods done and they were not doubling every 48 hours.

Are you going for another scan ?
Maybe when you had the first one it was to soon to see anything.

Hoep everything works out fine for you.

Thanks girls for your replies. My doctor has been very supportive. I had some spotting earlier in the week. I had some bloods done and they were in the normal range and had an ultrasound that was inconclusive, basically they could see the sac but not a lot else. I had some more bloods done on friday and doctor basically said lets just wait it out..so will have more bloods done on monday and another scan next week. The bloods were going up..just not anywhere near doubling. Its very depressing.

Jo am sure things will work out, while I personally have never had my bloods monitored so I can't be much help, but I have read of others on here with bloods that haven't gone up as much as they expected & have gone on to have viable pregnancies.

Am thinking of you & hoping that your next lot of tests show better results.

    Hi Jo,
I TOTALLY know what you are going through at the moment.
I have two stories to tell you.

With my first pg I had some spotting at 5 weeks and went to have an u/s which showed nothing. Too early they said. I had my hcg levels monitered every 48 hours. My levels were just in the normal range but on the low side. They were taking five days to double. My doc wasn't very hopeful and neither was I.
The spotting continued and I had further scans to check for ectopic pg. This was ruled out at 6 and a half weeks when they saw an empty gest. sac in my uterus. Still too early to tell what was going on they said.
The spotting got heavier until I was 7 and a half weeks and they got me to a specialist. I had a scan which showed the sac was too small for my dates and still no fetal pole. I knew my dates couldn't be more than 2-3 days out so I knew then that it was a blighted ovum pregnancy.
At 8 weeks we got a definate diagnosis and I had a d&c a few days later. My hcg the day before my d&c was 30,000 so it was still rising slowly.

Then after three months TTC again I got a BFP!
My doc assured me that a blighted ovum would not occur again.
At 5 weeks I had some spotting and of course assumed the worst.
I had my hcg levels checked and sure enough they were taking five days to double again. Oh no. The level was higher this time but the doubling time seems to be the indicator of a viable pg.
I was prepared for the same scenario as last time but I went for a scan at 6 weeks 3 days and we saw a baby and a heartbeat. The specialist has very sensitive equipment so was able to confirm a viable pg very early. The hormone levels are a worry but they obviously hadn't had a negative effect up to that point. The spotting has continued on and off but the ob. was able to see where that was coming from, nothing to do with the baby.
I am currently 8 weeks 1 day and so far so good. I haven't been having my hcg monitored any further as the ob said it doesn't mean as much as the gp's think and he didn't want me worrying.
I am off for a scan on Monday and hopefully all will be well. We are not out of the woods yet but at least we have a good chance.

I really hope that I haven't scared you here, I just want you to know that the hcg isn't really as reliable as we are led to believe. Another scan will tell you what is going on. I am thinking of you and [-o< that things work out for you.
If you want to know more just ask.

Thanks layla for your story. I hope everything continues well for your pregnancy. Its scary stuff isnt it. I dont want to worry as I know its not good for my body and its really out of my hands anyway. My hcg levels were 32 000 on wednesday and 39 000 friday....so no where near doubling. I guess i will just have to sit it out. Do you mind if i ask you how you felt about the d and c. I know that this may end up being an option for me if the results arent improving. How did u cope and was it a quick procedure. Please if its too distressing to talk about...i completely understand. I would simply like to ease my mind.

    Jo,
Your hcg levels soung good. I know they are not doubling but they are pretty high for the stage of pg you were at when they taken.
I really think you will be fine. My hcg was only about 3,000 at 6 weeks with the blighted ovum.
I don't mind talking about the d&c. I really resisted it at first as I'm a big scaredy cat and was worrying myself sick about it. I had a couple of weeks to dwell on the prospect of having onw which didn't help.
I hoped I would miscarry naturally but the doc said the bleeding could have gone on like that for weeks as it was not really heavy, and then I may have needed a d&c anyway.
The actual procedure was quick and painless. I was asleep for 10 minutes and the worst part was getting the drip put in.
I woke up feeling fine, just a bit weak. I was home within 2 hours.
I didn't have any cramping or bleeding after until 3 days later and then it was only like a very light period.
I did feel like having a D&C didn't give me an opportunity to grieve for the loss of my pregnancy as it was all so quick and clinical, but I guess it was a lot less traumatic than a natural m/c.
I did have a bit of an emotional breakdown about three days after the procedure but I think that was the hormones crashing down much the same as after you give birth.

I really hope that you don't need to know any of this, but if things don't go well I am here for you anytime.
Good luck with the scan, which day are you having it?

    Hi Jo,

I just wanted to let you know I am thinking of you and really hoping everything will be fine with the pg. I know how scary it can be, but as Tootie has said everyone is different and just because your levels aren't doubling doesn't mean anything bad. I too have had spotting with this pregnancy, like I did with the last one and I am absolutley panicing aswell. I get to have a 7 week u/s on Friday so hopefully everything will be fine, like I am hoping for you.

I noticed you asked Layla about her D&C. I hope you and Layla don't mind me butting in, but I had a D&C with my last pg (Sept this year) and although it was a sad time, the actual procedure is very quick. Well I guess it was as they put you to sleep, so you don't even know what is happening. I had a fantastic anthesiest (sp?) that helped me not get too emotional by making jokes.

    Hey Jo,

How are things going with you? Please do keep in touch and let us know how everything goes. We are thinking of you!

I have had 2 D&Cs and like the other girls I found it to be, physically, a very quick and painless procedure. The emotional side of things is a different story altogether! Both times I m/c'd naturally beforehand but had to have a D&C anyway as not everything came out.

I really hope that it doesn't come to that for you and that your bub continues to grow safe and well.

    Take care.

    Angel.

Thinking of you Jo. I too have been there before and to date, I have had 5 D&Cs to fix up failed pg. Like the other girls said, the procedures are quick and relatively painless - but the emotional bit can be a bit tricky to deal with...especially if it is all unexpected.

Mind you, although your levels are not doubling, they are still pretty high for were you are, and HCG does tend to become less reliable as pg progresses. That's why they normally stop blood work in favour of u/s, as soon as they can.

jo my hcg levels didn't double and my ob said that they do not double after 10,000. mine increased from 10000 to 14000 in three days and then were at 30000 a whole week later and my bubba is still hanging in there. [-o< ing everything will be ok for you and your bubba.

Jo, I'm [-o< everything will be ok for you and your bub.

As the others have said the D&C I had with my last PG was reasonlably painless and like Kazz I had a great anthesiest, but I did bleed reasonably heavily for about 5 days and was very tender on the trip home that night in the car, overall I think I was only in Hosp for about 3-4 hours total.

But looking at what the other girls have said about the HCG levels you could be perfectly fine and not need any of this info [-o<

    Take care.
